Of the 100 players on the NHL's 2017 top 100 players list, 91 of them are either on our list already (our top 100 project, plus the 65 players voted in so far), or are up for voting.

The nine players who haven't even yet come up for voting:
  1. Yvan Cournoyer
  2. Bob Gainey
  3. Mike Gartner
  4. Pat Lafontaine
  5. Joe Nieuwendyk
  6. Adam Oates
  7. Denis Savard
  8. Brendan Shanahan
  9. Darryl Sittler
It'll be interesting to see who appears on our list. I think most of these players will at least come up for voting. The least likely candidate - my guess would be Lafontaine.

i didn’t realize oates hasn’t come up yet. my first reaction is then why the f are we talking about robitaille, recchi, and sundin?

Interesting way to look at the list. This helps isolate cases where player reputations arguably exceed the reality by a lot. Notably, most of these guys have some signature achievement (Gainey’s Selkes, Sittler’s single game record, Gartner’s speed and consistency records) and also played in a scoring inflated era.

(btw, Oates went in at #134)

Based on our "top players by positions" lists, Cournoyer, Savard, Shanahan, and Sittler should probably make it.

If there was any need for evidence that the gaps between players are closing, I think it's pretty clear when you consider that we've had back-to-back rounds where everyone got at least one NR (save Anze Kopitar last round), and all but three players in those two rounds have had multiple NR's.

..Wow. What an awful result. Four guys who probably should have gone this round (read, the following round), and Steven Stamkos.

Is Kopitar the only player to immediately "win" a voting round? (Apart from the first voting, when everyone was new.)
Did it happen during the top-100 votings that a "new" guy ended up winning a round? Any cases where multiple "new" guys finished first (like if other new players finished right below Kopitar or any other "new" guy).

The Kopitar case indicates (at least to me) that he might have finished even higher if he had been up for voting earlier.

Based on the conversation surrounding Kopitar/Toews means this would've been certain

I'm in the camp that Kopitar > Toews having watched both many times.

At his absolute best Kopitar was a Hart caliber player. Good enough to win Selkes and produce 90 point seasons. Just didn't have the luxury of playing for a huge midwest sports market like Chicago. Or being Canadian. Still, his 2 SC winning runs are better than any of Toews IMO.

A few times actually. In this project, Lundqvist, Worters and Ivan Johnson come mind.
In the Top-100, Charlie Gardiner and maybe someone else.

I was waiting for this week's results to update the list of people who got voted in 1st time on the list, and it really falls into 3 categories - goalies early, old players in the middle, and active players now. Of the 65 players voted in so far, not including the Vote 1 players, 13 of them have been voted in their 1st time on the list.

Vote 2: Henrik Lundqvist, Tony Esposito
Vote 3: Roy Worters
Vote 5: Roberto Luongo, Ivan Johnson
Vote 6: Connor McDavid, Vladimir Krutov
Vote 9: Patrice Bergeron (Vladimir Petrov)
Vote 10: Marty Barry, Victor Hedman
Vote 12: Mickey MacKay
Vote 13: Anze Kopitar
Vote 14: Steven Stamkos

Petrov was in for a bit, until the last ballot was received and changed the order. That would have been an interesting result, given that week only Bergeron and Petrov were added to the voting pool, and would both have been elected on the 1st ballot.

I'm not releasing results until we have a "full" slate of votes for this week. Buffalowing checked out a few weeks ago, but @Dr John Carlson has been very reliable, so I am keeping the faith that I will get votes from him very soon. We still have about 3 hours before I go to sleep. If I can release tonight, I will.

We've definitely reached a point where there's uncertainty before the reveal. It's getting a lot harder to get a feel for who's going in.

It's odd to me that the tenth and twelfth place finishers got first place votes and that one of only two players to get no NRs didn't even come close to having enough points to make the list yet.

Carey Price with a first place vote. Wow.

Tremblay was the only one in the top 5 I had in my top 5.

Ratelle the 3rd player to go that I didn't have on my list. The first one I saw play.
