In his final year if he is very likely not playing to the tune of a 10 million dollar player, no team is going to give him that, not just the Sharks or Leafs. You would just not qualify him, which makes him UFA and sign him for less, or reach an agreement with him for less before any QO needs to be made. Most players and agents know within a decent range what they may or may not get in a deal, so if he is nowhere near his $10 million QO in value, he won't have any team over the barrel so to speak in negotiations.

That said, this particular trade seems like a very sideways/unnecessary deal. Similar players, production and cap hit, so not sure why either team does this trade, when they both like their current guy.

Oh totally, but if Meier think he's worth 8 x8, or 9 x 8, and your gm offers him 6 × 7, he doesn't NEED to sign like the othera RFA, cause you can't qualify him at 10M.

This. If the solution to him not being worth 10m is to make him a UFA... that is going to effect his trade value.

The 10 million QO is a complication no matter how you slice it. Good job by the agent in creating this leverage. Why on Earth wouldn't he use it?
