It's been awhile since we've done this. It's always fascinating to me to see the different groups and music people are listening to. Fill out the survey below and add whatever you want including videos, band sites, backstage stories, tour riders, etc.

If you don't know what tour riders are, go look up your favorite band here - some are entertaining, some are stupid.

Be nice. Contrary to what some here believe, Metal is not the only music that doesn't suck.

Best Concert You've Ever Been To

Drove 45 minutes to William and Mary without a friend, a GPS, or even knowing if they were sold out. Found out they had been sold out for weeks and there was nobody scalping. Long story short, I was able to talk the girl working the door that my "friend" had my ticket and that I thought he was already inside. I'm not sure why I thought such a terrible story would work, but after 15-20 minutes she pulled me aside she said "I know what you're trying to do. Gimme a few minutes, I'll get you in." Sure enough, she got me in right as The Breeders were wrapping up their set.:yo:

Last Concert You Went To
Monster Mayhemfest. Wasn't a complete ****show, but it was more like beerfest. People passed out all over the lawn at like 2 in the afternoon. I went to see Slayer (again), Motorhead, and Anthrax. The rest of the groups that were there could have not shown up and I wouldn't have cared at all. It actually might have even been a better show. Some of those groups that played the sidestages would have been better off not leaving their garages or basements.

Worst Concert You've Ever Been To
Disturbed...they were opening for Danzig, and the lead singer gets wheeled out on a Hannibal Lecter gurney. It was the corniest thing I've ever seen.
He did the same thing when they were on tour with Adema and Drowning Pool. As I was rolling my eyes, my one friend (who got me the ticket since he had a last second cancellation) was over there saying how bad ass it was. Yeah....except that it wasn't. It would have been more bad ass if he did the entire set like that.

Biggest Concert Dissappointment
Rise Against, and I feel odd saying that since I'm a fan. Whoever did their sound that night must have dropped all of the high end of the sound during their set. I thought maybe it had been the acoustics of Consol since I had never been to a show there since they opened, but then started to think about the opening band that was just on. They sounded just fine. It honestly sounded like they put they put Rise Against in a cardboard box with insulation and would occasionally only a flap on the box and you'd hear the high end of the show for like 3 seconds.

Was starting to worry that the sound guy would ruin the Foo's set, but they sounded just fine.

Artist you'd most like to meet/drink with
Dave Grohl

Band that you'd love to see in concert but it can never happen
I'm guessing that Husker Du reunion will not be happening anytime soon. Ever.

Styles of Music
Favorite styles
Alternative, punk, thrash, electro-rock, new wave, post-punk, and found myself listening to shoegaze (Curve, Catherine Wheel, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) lately.
Styles you don't listen to
New country, top 40 pop, post-2005 hiphop. The rest I'm indifferent to.

Desert Island Album (you get 1 album for eternity)
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime. 45 songs on the CD, had to factor in some variety if I'm only getting on CD.

Artist you'd most like to meet/drink with

Ian MacKaye. :sarcasm:

Band that you'd love to see in concert but it can never happen

I'll echo SomeDude's choice of Elliott Smith. A lot of the bands I like that have broken up were very much "in the moment." Seeing a band like Minor Threat now might be a little depressing.

Ian MacKaye came through here a few weeks ago and played a small hall with his current band The Evens. Had planned on going to see if there was a chance that he attempted to do an acoustic cover of a minor threat song:laugh:, but ended up working late.

As much as I would like to see a Minor Threat reunion, I'm mixed on it. Like you said, it would probably be depressing. Most of the previous members are no longer musically active. Lyle Preslar is a lawyer and "split from the hardcore scene in 1983" (his words in this podcast that I just started listening to about 5 minutes ago: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/going-off-track/id518190148?ign-mpt=uo=4#), and Jeff Nelson sounds like he's musically retired. The bigger question is would Ian's voice be able to handle a full set of vocals from 30 years(!) ago?

In fact, there's been a ton of stuff that I wanted to see this year and missed.

FLAG reunion at Stage AE: bought tickets, worked late (on a Friday no less), didn't leave the office until almost 9. Heard the show had good reviews too, especially considering Keith Morris is probably pushing 60 by now.

Pennywise at Altar Bar. Wanted to go, was scheduled to be out of town. Ended up flying back in earlier that day. Was so tired that when I got back to my living room that I fell asleep in my chair with the laptop opened, ready to order tickets.

I wonder if Keith Morris is still rocking the dreads.

I don't think the Evens do any Minor Threat covers, I don't think Ian covers his old bands in general. Although, Ian did do a set with Henry Rollins on Rollins' 50th birthday, so I think he can probably still hang vocally.

It's weird to see how Ian has aged, but generally looks like the same dude, whereas Jeff Nelson is totally unrecognizable and looks like a history teacher or something.

Also, I didn't even know that Pennywise show was happening when it did. Otherwise, I might have gone for nostalgic value, that was one of the bands I grew up listening to. 14 year old me would kick my ass if he knew I missed out on that.

I feel like the Metal Circus EP is somewhat unappreciated, even though it has some great songs on it. I feel like it's a perfect mix of their more hardcore stuff and the more ambitious things they'd try later.

from the earlier years, i've always liked their cover of Eight Miles High. i imagine that song has to be hard to track down - i don't think it showed up on any albums and as you and Bruno have mentioned nobody should hold their breath for an remastered albums or compilations.

surprised that i didn't catch your eye when i mentioned that i picked up an album of the music that Popol Vuh composed for the Agguirre soundtrack.

4. Tammy Wynette

great choice. the duets with George Jones are killer.

The crucial bit is people tend to really admire everything they've done. Except this. I think I'm the only person who really loves and defends it.

i'm digging this - does this constitute NWOBHM?

It might disappoint a little, haha. Outside of Howlin Wolf, I wouldn't have any electric blues players on my list. He's the exception to the rule - I'm a country blues fan.

Robert Pete Williams, your boy Mississippi John Hurt (the most melodic of 'em eh?...sounds unlike anybody else around the Delta), Charlie Patton, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie Witherspoon etc.

the question wasn't exactly fair - i'm a far bigger fan of country blues myself, but like my compadre Bruno i still find myself beholden to the institution of the album. i'm glad you can get most (more likely, some) of the best stuff now that country blues has seen something of a renaissance with collections, compilations and box sets getting packaged and re-issued left and right.

i used to have this one in my car, but i've seen to lost/misplaced/had it pilfered by a roommate or my brother. but in terms of albums, there is a real dearth of country blues albums.

there's Blind Willie McTell's Last Sessions from 1955. your boy, Rev Gary Davis has a few albums. Say No to the Devil is inspired. Harlem Street Singer is great as well. Robert Pete Williams, Pink Anderson and Mance Lipscomb put out albums with Prestige Records. most of Son House's 60's 're-emergence' was carefully documented in album form. there are a smattering of random (to me) artists who put out one-and-done records - i'm thinking of Pete Franklin and Doctor Ross here. luckily Skip James was able to put out two or three records. Big Bill Broonzy Sings Folk Songs is a favorite of mine.

i saw a few people mention that they dig the Black Keys. dudes put out an EP of Junior Kimbrough songs. i hope that release drives some people to seek out his work. in my opinion, he's one of the great bluesmen of the last twenty-five years.

I'll go ahead and assume I'm the only 70's prog rock fan here. Classic Yes, Genesis, King Crimson.. that's where it's at.

i mentioned upthread that i picked up a Crimson live show about a week ago. Absent Lovers from the 80s. killer record, there's some great improvisation. i'm not a big prog fan, i think a lot of those bands would have been well served ditching their lyrics and becoming instrumental groups, but once in a while these types of bands surprise me. Soft Machine is a band from that era that i really dig.

Les Rallizes Denudes
Jesus Lizard
Dirty Three

great, great taste. when i want to listen to rock, those are the kinds of bands that do it for me.

The Braxton is Dona Lee, live in Sweden from '71 or '72. Just beautiful playing, free from his more dissonant, systematic stuff.

that's a great set as well. i think i read something where Braxton said he wanted to be the most recorded artist of all time. he's certainly made a valiant effort.

you also hate the only good grunge band :sarcasm:

there's no hope for you kid. stick with the disney soundtracks. ;)

I love Mudhoney, but you gotta give some love to Tad.

I'm a big 70s prog fan. If you like Crimson, Yes, etc, and you haven't heard Patto, find the first two albums and listen to them immediately. Pretty much anything on the Vertigo label will hit the spot, but I would put the first Patto record ahead of any other prog record, period.

As far as live Crimson goes, the Earthbound album destroys them all. Fripp never wanted it released because he thought it sounded like ****... it's perfectly blown out in my opinion.

If you're feeling even more adventurous, the late 60s-early 70s prog out of Sweden is some of the best ever. Parson Sound, Trad Gras Och Stenar, Baby Grandmothers, Kebnekaise - all amazing. And to hear it in a recent band, Dungen is pretty amazing. Great live band.

I will say that this board, at least, generally seems to have extremely good taste in music. At least, to my ears. I'm just so used to seeing the same metal/hardcore stuff re-iterated over and over again, I guess.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

On the contrary, the "Eight Miles High" single was released on CD and 10" with the "Makes No Sense at All" single back in the early '90s. It's still available through Amazon. You have to fork over something like $10 (if you opt for the CD) for four tracks and "Makes No Sense at All" is identical to the album version as far as I know. But still!

i'm digging this - does this constitute NWOBHM?

A good soundtrack. My favorite Herzog soundtrack would have to be Fitzcarraldo, though, which also is also mostly from Popol Vuh.

This. I put mine together in a single sitting without much serious consideration (first thing to pop into my mind sort of thing). I could do another list, completely different--but equally valid.

And probably a different one still tomorrow.

How 'bout one focused solely on Merseyside bands from the '80's: Teardrop Explodes, Lotus Eaters, Half Man Half Biscuit, Echo, China Crisis, Lightning Seeds, and, of course, where would anyone be without having heard "Young Manhood" by the Wild Swans?
