babcock makes players better by taken them out of situations they have a higher chance of failing in. Hunwick shift started 15 times in our d-zone, Phaneuf shifts started 8 times in our d-zone last game against st louis, get it?

hunwick is much a number 1 defenseman as reimer is a starting goalie.

This is what I have. Anyone on the team currently that you don't see I think will either be traded or released. I also have Desrocher and Donaghey in Orlando to start the season and Bracco back in Kitchener. I have us signing Zaitsev but not Stamkos, Staal or Vesey. Of course, this will be horribly wrong, even a month from now. This is one of those things that's fun to pass the time, but is impossible to 100% get with trades and free agency and such. Never the less, this is my attempt.

Missing Loov on D, unless he got traded too.

Going to try and be as realistic as possible here... Yes four/five rookies is a lot but maybe one or two spots are filled up with cheap UFA signings until next years deadline.

Bozak and Polak moved for picks, leafs draft a defenseman (Chychrun/Juolevi/Sergachyev) and send him back to Jr.

Komarov - Kadri - Marner
JVR - Nylander - Brown
Lupul - Holland - Johnson
Morin - Froese - Winnik

6 rookies is a lot, but could potentially be manageable. In your case, however, you have 3 rookies in our top 6, which is way too much responsibility. Even Eichel's a 2nd line center this year.

The thing is I'm not expecting them to all make the roster at once.

Nylander and Leivo most likely get looks after the TDL when we need bodies. Similar situation with Percy or Harrington assuming we move a defenseman.

Its unlikely we would have that roster at the start of next season but around December/January I wouldn't be surprised if we had 4-5 sophomore/rookie players around the roster. Remember Leivo and Percy already have NHL experience, same with Morin and Harrington.

Johnson is tearing it up, could see him getting some reps in the AHL before making the team next year. Zeitsev is definitely NHL ready and probably in a top 4 role if we can land him, but many teams seem interested.

As a worst case scenario should the leafs only sell pending UFA's while keeping all RFAs and players under contract:

  1. JVR
  2. Bozak
  3. Kadri (resign)
  4. Komarov
  5. Winnik
  6. Lupul
  7. Holland
  8. Froese
  9. Nylander
  10. Brown
  11. Soshnikov
  12. Marner
  13. Leivo

JVR Bozak Brown
Marner Kadri Komarov
Winnik Nylander Soshnikov
Leivo Holland Lupul
Froese

  1. Phaneuf
  2. Gardiner
  3. Hunwick
  4. Rielly

  6. Percy/Loov/Harrington/Corrado

I like Zeke's lineup. That team would be so exciting I don't think I would ever sleep.

Here's a thing, I guess we ALL know now if we signed Stamkos, all he would do is come in here and succeed under Babcock. Fit in, and stay quiet. Probably get along very well with the rest of the players.

Realistically I think it looks something like this: (Keep in mind these free agents are just guys i added who could be potential targets for short term deals, im not saying the leafs will for sure sign these guys)

JVR-Bozak-Parenteau
Komarov-Kadri-Versteeg
Helm-Nylander-Lupul
Winnik-Holland-Leivo
Froese

Phaneuf-Rielly
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Harrington-Hunwick

Kadri alone is worth Drouin, and we add Percy? Talk about over rating a player, and if we shop kadri around we can probly get a little more for him

I'm predicting a lot could change this off-season with how much cap space we've got opening up + many extra picks (which should be even more after the deadline) + good cheap prospects a lot of which are very close to NHL ready that other teams would covet as cheap contracts.

The cap is due to only marginally rise and a lot of teams will be in a cap crunch.

The Leafs have a lot of money coming off the books specifically in Polak, Matthias, Spaling and Grabner.

Then on July 1st, after Robidas collects his signing bonus he's only owed 1 million. I fully expect him to be shipped off to a team like Florida or Arizona ala Savard/Pronger moves. An extra 3 million to work with in the off-season is huge.

Also on July 1st, Winnik collects his signing bonus and is only owed 570K which makes him very attractive to teams that counts real dollars (and could be trying to shed dollars).

We only have 1 player who's due a sizable increase in Rielly then future guys "core" guys like Nylander, Marner or current "core" guys like JVR have at least 2 years till they'll need a new contract.

The Leafs are a cap team and always will be. This off-season they'll look to take advantage of that just like they try to every off-season.

I fully expect some of the prospect depth to be packaged up and we take advantage of our cap space.

Take a team like the Ducks for example who have an internal budget and have no significant contracts coming off the books.

Next season they've got the following happening though:
Kesler goes from 5 to 6.875
Despres goes from 900K to 3.7
Anderson needs a sizable new contract off his 1.15 cap hit
Vatanen needs a sizable new contract off his current 1.26 cap hit
Lindholm needs a sizable new contract off his current 894K

The Ducks are only 1 example of a team that will have to shed salary by dealing out valuable pieces likely for cheap pieces (and cheap youngsters specifically being coveted).

Tampa if they extend Stamkos still have to deal with Kucherov + Killorn raises and will have to shed a lot of dollars.

Calgary is near the cap this year and next year have the Gio extension kick in + have to give huge pay increases to Guardeau + Monahan.

tbh i could see the leafs signing a better player to a high money low term contract (2-3yrs). Like Loui Eriksson

I think we'll trade Bozak if we sign Stamkos. Kadri being the shut down centre may be playing an important role long-term. That is unless we utilise someone like Marner or even Auston Mathews and Logan Brown into that role.

JVR - Stamkos - Nylander ( Top scoring line)
LW - Kadri - Marner ( vs top lines)
Komarov - Holland - Lupul ( depth scoring)
Winnik - Froese - Leivo ( defensive fourth line)

Rielly - Phaneuf ( Top pairing)
Gardiner - 4D
Marincin - Corrado

Reimer
Bernier

I have a feeling that we'll try signing someone like Loui Eriksson. He'd be great to have on a line with Kadri. Defensively responsible and is someone with strong playmaking ability. Personally, I think Naz requires creative partners ( vs scorers, i.e. JVR) in order to utilise him most effectively. Marner being defensively strong could really help us develop a line that can really bleed top lines.

Moreover, the top line should be extremely successful. I really think Nylander can be that creative playmaker that Marty once was. JVR will offer net presence and represent a stronger solution in that role than Ryan Malone. We may even see Stamkos produce 60 goals with such linemates.

Lastly, I can see Rielly and Phaneuf finally forming the top pairing. Much like Chicago, Nashville, St Louis, our top pairing is shutting down top lines while producing big offensive numbers. Gardiner, on the other hand, will anchor the mid-pairing with a #3D with a partner in our system ( or UFA)
