Motte was a top prospect as a teen and he’s had to go through several ups and downs to get where he finally is. He’s the type of guy the Leafs need. Now, would I give up a first rounder? Not a chance. There’s other players who can bring that same dimension much cheaper.

With retention I can see vancouver getting a late 2nd rounder if they are lucky.
By results Motte's line is one of, if not the best 3rd/4th lines in the NHL

Thanks Breakers for posting this.........

don't show it to Leaf fans, they think they know more.

Yeah, so exactly how many of these combo's are 1st and 2nd lines or at least have multiple 1st line players on them?

It was reported over the weekend that Tampa Bay was really interested in Motte and now Friedman is reporting that so are the Leafs. Its no surprise these cup contender teams are interested in Motte as he would be an great addition to their bottom 6 and PK.

Motte may not be a "sexy" name out there and teams in the east arent exposed to his game much but i promise that any team that trades for him will be extremely extremely satisfied with what he would bring to their cup run. Endless motor, elite forecheck, aggressive PKer. I would put him in the top 5 in the league in terms of a player that takes away time and space on forechecks and breakouts for opposing Dmen.

Do note though that the Canucks themselves are very high on Motte and are very much considering on re-signing him if they dont get the offers they want.

So basically we aren't giving him up without an overpayment, so were not trading him then?

Love Motte but zero chance he gets us a 1st rounder, or high 2nd.

This is the piece that will put the Leafs over the top. The league may have to veto this because it wouldn’t even be fair adding Motte to Toronto’s roster.

Lol what the hell is Dubas doing? Why doesn’t he actually try to do something about the severely flawed roster he’s put together instead of dicking around going after players that will have zero positive impact on his teams chances this year? I literally didn’t even know who Motte was before tonight, and then I go and look and he’s in his 7th season in the league lmao. There cannot be a more obscure player in the league to give up assets for.

A big defensive top-4 D, and starting calibre goalie is what they should be after. I hope Leafs fans are ready to see their team try to play pond hockey in the playoffs again en route to another 1st round exit.

People did say "Who" when tampa traded for goodrow at the deadline.

That model of affordable depth on expiring contracts seems to be more important than these expensive pieces at the deadline

I personally think if your top 4 and top 6 aren't set, you got big problems.

Biggest problem seems to be in goal, why not trade the 1st for a decent goalie?

That’s with almost half a season because of the previous coach. We should keep him even at $3 million. Rutherford likes these guys and I’d say he is Tanev 2.0 or better. Definitely his money figure and term are, he’s the type we resign though and brings speed and skill.

Edit: I meant Brandon Tanev

love motte to death but the smart play is trading him at his absolute peak value now and if it was meant to be he comes back to us in the summer

it's a unique situation where as a specialist role player his value is sky high because he is both excellent at that role and cheap, and teams could use it for a playoff run. but in contrast to previous beloved bottom six energy wingers like burrows and cooke, his value in normal circumstances is fairly low. cooke was motte with surprisingly good hands, middle six upside, and could credibly fill in on the top line in spurts. as a legitimately elite defensive forward with much much better offensive upside than cooke, burrows was a different class altogether. motte's ceiling is what he is, an excellent fourth liner, a good third liner. when we've had to move him up the lineup due to injuries and covid protocol, he's clearly been out of his depth.

realistically, if motte will re-sign here, he will do it whether or not he ends the year here. if he wants to test the market, he wants to test the market, and we can't afford him. other than the very small chance of making the playoffs, i don't see what we gain by keeping him.

Frank Vatrano nets a 4th round pick, and Tyler Motte is supposed to get a top 40 pick....

We can argue back and forth on who is the better player, I personally would say Motte is the better player. But that is the market for a player of Motte's caliber. He is not exponentially better than Vatrano.

this trade should dampen the expectation of a Motte return IMO

Motte just won’t go anywhere, we are in a playoff race as well. This is a scenario where we might let him go if we are offered something in that range. The value hasn’t changed

Ya I think that is reasonable.

I'd be shocked if anyone paid a top 40 pick for him personally. So if they are in fact firm on that, he likely sticks around. He's a solid player, and he likely would have been dealt by now if the price tag was reasonable.
