Comets fill their second goalie slot by calling up Jake Kielly from Kalamazoo. He's had a rough go with the Wings. 7-11-4, 3.97 GAA. and .887 SV%. Would guess Mikey will be seeing a lot of rubber. This month ends with a 3 in 4 nights weekend. March is brutal schedule wise for the Comets and 1 keeper can't go it alone. 3 more 3 in 4 nights weekends (Wed, Fri, Sat), 1 3 in 3 nights (Fri, Sat, Sun), + an odd Tuesday. That's 13 games in 25 days. April is more of the same as the schedule ends with 2 more 3 in 4 nights weekends. That's 6 weekends of a Wednesday followed by Friday-Saturday back to backs and 1 weekend of 3 in a row. Mikey will need to be spelled likely once a week the way the Comets leave their goalie out to dry or there's a good chance Cull will kill the kid and the Comets chances if he plays him every game.

Have to hope Marky can come back soon.

Didn't they say Bachman could be returned whenever needed. That it was just a loan to get him some playing time?

Benning quoted as saying that Bachman can be recalled from his loan to the SHL. If Markstrom is out a month, they must be considering it.

It's only the only reasonable thing to do. Your farm is down to their rookie keeper and is fighting for a playoff spot. it only makes sense to bring back a more experienced, veteran keeper over a guy who has been struggling in the ECHL.

You can let Mikey carry the load but let Cull decide who gets which of the 7 straight weekend back to backs. The 6 3 in 4 games allows the #1 to play Wednesday and either of the Friday or Saturday games and the backup would get the other. The 7th weekend is 3 in a row. Mikey gets the Friday-Sunday pair and Bachie or whomever it is goes Saturday. 7 weekends and Mikey gets 2 of each 3. 14 for Mikey and 7 for the backup. The odd Tuesday game would probably go to Mikey.

All of this is predicated upon the time Markstrom will miss, the return of Bachman as soon as possible, and how well Mikey holds up under the brunt of the load. Louis Domingue can fit into this picture at some point as well. Between the 3 of them you ride the hot guy and spell him with the better of the other 2.

Leaving Bachman over in Sweden and giving DiPietro nothing better behind him than Kielly, puts way too much extra pressure on the kid as he'll have enough as it is. It would be farm neglect of the worst type to use the lesser of the 2 keepers to back up Mikey when both are readily available. Bachman should be back in town and a roster player by Friday the 28th and available to play by the 29th. You don't waste time fiddling around with what ifs. YOU GET HIS BUTT ON A PLANE. He can always go back if things work out better than expected, but with as close as things are in the North Division leaving a playoff berth up to Kielly's ability to win at this level would be inexcusable. Let them both practice with the team and play the guy who looks the best.

Domingue is the man, but nobody has a clue as to when, if ever. he will be assigned here.

I am going to have the opposite opinion on Bachman here. I think it would be very unfair to ask him to uproot himself (and potentially his family) all the way from Sweden to come back to Utica and back up Mikey D. If he was loaned to another AHL with return rights then sure bring him back to Utica but not from Sweden. Bachman has been a good soldier keeping a happy face on while being the third goalie in Utica and not even dressing 95% of the time so he deserves to stay and play in Sweden until his season ends over there.

I also don't think Bachman is a very good goalie at this point in his career and has been deteriorating for years now. If he is pulled out of Sweden he would likely just sit the bench anyway so if he can get actual game action in Sweden it might be the best thing for everyone involved. The option to recall Bachman provides added insurance if another goalie in either Vancouver or Utica goes down with an injury but assuming that doesn't happen I would leave him in Sweden.

Plus it is time to give Kielly a look. I know his ECHL numbers are not good but they are comparable with the other goalie in Kzoo which also tells me that Kzoo is not very good defensively....after all they are part of the Canucks and Comets family..

Just curious....if Markstrom is back by the end of March can Louis Domingue be shipped to Comets for the AHL playoffs? He did play some games in the AHL this season with the Binghampton Devils. Or does he have to clear waivers?

This is my understanding of the options that the Canucks have with Domingue (all good news)

Domingue was placed on waivers on 2/20, cleared waivers on 2/21 and assigned to the AHL Binghamton Devils that same day.

The Canucks traded for Domingue on 2/24 and because he was already on an AHL roster he did not need to be papered down. He was later recalled to Vancouver as an emergency recall thus not taking up one of the four regular recalls Vancouver has available after the trade deadline.

Because it is an emergency recall the time spent in the NHL doesn't start the 30 day clock on needing waivers again. When Markstom is activated off IR then Domingue has to either be returned to the AHL or converted to a regular recall.

So the bottom line is yes Domingue can be sent to the Comets at any point during the remainder of the AHL season or playoffs without being exposed to waivers.

Canucks under Benning with good (basic) cap/roster maneuvers? Unbelievable! :sarcasm:

Seriously, Benning deserves credit for managing this situation for the NHL club, under severe time constraints during a very busy time of the season. Also credit for drafting Demko and DiPietro. And getting Ian Clark. Lotsa other teams blowing up their seasons because of bad goaltending . . . looking at you TOR, ARI, CAR (until you got zamboni dude) STL last year (until you fluked into Binninginginginginton). Not you SJS, you would suck this year even with good goaltending - and I say that with love.

Great news for the Comets.....Domingue has had an up-and-down career so far, but has spent a lot more time in the NHL than Zane McIntyre...and gives them a solid veteran option heading into the playoffs. He'll have the opportunity to work with the Canucks goalie guru Ian Clark to get his game straightened out for the next month, so will be in a better position to help both the Canucks and the Comets.
