I appreciate the news and insight a lot. When it's the same thing every day, page after page, it's not news anymore. It's not about it being "negative" either. That's people's go-to excuse for bitching.
You are complaining that "this thread started to get depressing, much like the rest of the board" while posting on a message board for a team that has been one of the worst teams in the past 5 years. You want this place to be like the Panthers forum and have one tenth the posts just so you aren't so depressed? Everyone wants a passionate fanbase when winning but when the losing starts happening suddenly that passionate fanbase are a bunch of whiners.

Yeah, but, we're winning?

Recapped the game here: 2/21/2020 – Utica Comets vs. Belleville Senators

Really solid statement win for the Comets that they badly needed

2020 has a scary asterisk that they're a total paper tiger -- and even if they get to playoffs they very well could be

but tonight against Belleville was probably their best effort all season. Strong compete on loose pucks, no one took a shift off. The shots favored Belleville slightly, but a majorty were from the outskirts, unlike the usual trend where teams would set up shop in the slot/high-slot and score at will.

The few goals against were out of exhaustion, poor line changes, or bad giveaways. Way better than seeing a d-man get walked and then the whole team stands flatfooted watching the opposing offense set up a play.

Belleville Game. One of the better overall efforts in a while.

Liked

Bailey - crucial getting him back. Game breaker at this level and probably needed a better look with the Canucks

Chatfield - thought he was very good. Best Comet d-man at getting people off the puck and keeping them off the puck. Got back well to break up plays.

Rafferty - few hiccups defensively but superior at controlling the puck and the play. NHL level puck handler. Played with Brisebois which overall has been the best Comet duo this year.

Baertschi - protected the puck well and moved it around well. Too bad he has lost a step or two b/c his vision and puck control is still major league

Boucher - kind of ditto Baertschi. When they are with Camper they are dangerous.

LeBlanc - d-man playing 4th line wing. Effective on the forecheck and actually made some nice offensive moves. Line with him and Malone and Stephenson were surprising good.

Lind - involved through out and finished very well on his goal.

Only player that I didn't like was Bancks who was back on his heels all game being flat footed and reaching. If this player isn't skating well doesn't have much game.

Noted Joulevi out which gave me hope that Canucks might get something for him but probably just still ill.

Now with 100% less Benning!

Still burns my butt that Bailey basically got bumpkiss in terms of a look from the Canucks. In the meantime we're treated to the sight of guys like Eriksson, Roussel and Schaller, before he was mercifully traded, plodding up and down the ice.

Sometimes you wonder why the Canucks even bother owning a farm team.
Yeah Bailey definitely should've gotten a longer look. But it is what it is with this team...

If we gave him a longer look we'd have Comet's posters complain that we haven't replaced them. When we use them for a game or two, as you do with call-ups, and send them back then you get complaints that you never gave them a chance.

There's no winning either way.

I believe the more recent reports are that it was upgraded to an 'upper body injury', which is less than ideal if thats the case.

He played enough to show that they only part of his game that is NHL caliber is his straight-line speed. After nearly costing the Canucks a goal in the Chicago game with a defensive zone turnover when the Hawks weren't applying any puck pressure, he was promptly benched for the rest of the game.

Bailey showed a nice bump in his play Friday night. Played an inspired game, and this has happened with most of the call ups this year upon their return to Utica, even players like Chatfield that didn't see game action and just worked in practice with the Nhl players and coaches.

Waiting to see what the Utica roster will look like by the end of tomorrow's NHL TDL.

A trade or two could change everything but right now MacEwen is the only player in Vancouver that can be papered down. Can't use the excuse that we only have four regular call ups the rest of the season when we are only talking about one player.

Yup, only MacEwen. Maybe they do and maybe they don't paper him down. He hasn't been very good in his recent returns, but who knows?

It's the extras added in trades that I wonder about. Baertschi with a pro rated salary would be a cheap rental at this time. They'd have to deal, with the 3rd and final year of that contract over the summer. The Comets also have 2 guys who have dented the twines a lot this season in Boucher and Bailey. I believe Benning would trade them for a couple picks since he has been giving his away. How about all 3 of these guys for a 2nd? It would be a terrible deal for the future of his farm, but you never know with him.

We have seen teams make deals to actually strengthen their farm, but he hasn't made one of those. There is also an AHL trade deadline coming up. That's how they got Hensick a couple years back. Conacher was behind that one. Henning was behind a couple others. Johnson hasn't made any AHL deals.

If the Comets do have a chance in the playoffs, a quality AHL center would be extremely valuable as would a solid defensive D-man on the same level.

Even though Benning really didn't do anything on trade deadline day, Comets are still a winner because Baertshi and Goldy are still on the team....figured there was a chance one or both would be dealt. Not much market for either guy I guess, but still impact players at the AHL level.

MacEwen was papered and the Comets roster is intact, save for McIntyre (who has become the backup to DiPietro) going to the Devils. When Markstrom is healthy, the Comets will get Domingue as insurance.

Thanx.

Have to give him credit for leaving the Comets in tact. That hasn't happened very often.

Domingue was tough against the Comets with the Crunch.

He only played 7 games for Binghamton and was 4-2-1 with a 2.45 GAA. He's not a prospect at 27 and Vancouver is his 4th NHL franchise, but he has 140 NHL GP. Get the feeling he will be the backup to Mikey when he gets here, but he is perfectly capable of sharing the load.
