In 2008- 09 Interim GM Cliff Fletcher tried to "clear the slate" deal away all Leafs vets Mats and Co. and add a bunch of scrubs Jeff Finger, Jamal Mayers, Jonas Frogren and Ryan Hollweg etc etc and played out the year with 40 year old Cujo and Justin Pogge as Leafs gave up a whopping 293 league worst goals against in hopes of tanking the 2008-09 year for John Tavares. Trying to tank and finish last overall was clear and obvious and on schedule as Leafs began their draft rebuild plan.

Everything was on schedule until Leafs hired Burke mid season and he made all sorts of head scratching, tank preventing moves that resulted in Leafs not bottoming out but rather losing draft positions. Then after self inflicted loss of draft positions he boisterously boasted he would trade up to get Tavares afterwards.

Now 10 years later the World has self corrected the errors of past mismanagement and JT has come home to where he should have been all along.

Welcome home Johnny, we all missed you!!!!

Yup! Center was the Leafs weakest position for like 10 solid years. Antropov, Grabovski, Bozak, Tim Connolly, Matt Lombardi, Dave Bolland, Peter Holland, Mike Santorelli. What a sad, sad list.

The 3 best centers the Leafs have had in a decade (Tavares, Matthews, Kadri) are all on the team and in their prime, right now. It's officially the teams biggest strength, and possibly the best for that position in the entire NHL.
