As a Hawks fan i think their prospect pool has a great deal of depth but probably lacks the star talent to be in conversation for top-5. Hawks are actually currently voting on their top-20 prospects and have reached 15 so far and there are some interesting names on the list.

Clearly not the case. Just because you don't know their names, it doesn't equate poor depth. When a decent prospect like Toni Rajala misses your top 20 (which he likely will come next list) you have prospect depth. Excellent depth? No. Poor depth? Research.

Top 10 is pushing it, but I'd have them likely in the top 15. Which is a far cry from where they have been. The pool has had a lot of strong development within it and selling off a piece like Burns helps the pool, but ultimately not the team at the moment.

As for the Oilers, is Pitlick really that highly regarded? Didn't see much of anything worth noting while he was at Mankato... Taking a step down and playing junior makes is stats look respectable; I guess. Can't say I've seen him since Mankato, though, so maybe he's taken that step...

Edmonton lacks a top tier goalie which would place them in the top five or ten but definitely not number one.

Personally, I'd rather have a couple top prospects than a "deep" field of 2nd/3rd tier prospects. Granted, the absolutely best prospect systems have both.

You're confusing yourself. Fine, you think the Islanders have a perfect prospect pool. Very objective I'm sure. The difference though, is that the quality of the Islanders has no effect on the depth of the Oilers. You're confusing yourself by making this absurd connection. Your logic is basically "the Islanders have these players therefore the Oilers depth is lacking." Sort of sit on that for a few minutes. The Islanders have an impressive stack of prospects yes. That has no bearing on the level of the Oilers. This isn't a weighted grading system. Edmonton's prospect level is not "****" and making some arbitrary comparison of each team's goalie prospects means "nothing".

Ottawa, Florida, and Edmonton are my top three. I really like the depth of the Chicago system but Morin is really the only sure fire top six prospect we have. Luckily we have the core in place and all we need are complimentary players to fill in the gaps.

We have only gotten to #12, but thats something like how it will end up. Personally, I can only think of 1 or 2 teams that can compete with our top 20, but I may have some bias. So I am curious what other teams can come up with.

Florida is the best IMO. What seperates them from every other team is that they have potential #1 center, #1 goalie and #1 defenseman in their system. So much depth to follow that.

After that I like Edmonton's prospects. Stacked at forwards and have some nice depth in goalie and defense positions.

The Kings, despite dealing away Schenn still have a top 3 prospect pool. Martin Jones, Loktionov and Voyvnov all had great years with Manchester and they have some nice up and coming pieces like Gibson, Kitsyn, Toffoli, Weal and Forbort.

Minnesota is quite underrated, they possibly have the best forward talent of all teams. Granlund put on a show in the WHC outscoring future teammate Mikko Koivu and stars like Gaborik, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk, etc. Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker both played well in training camp and both will get recognition in the WJC. However their defense is lacking to be place higher in the rankings.

Bruins are probably top-10. Excellent depth at defense and some real shining stars at the top... Three/Four first-line/first-pairing caliber guys at the top (Dougie, Spooner, Khokhlachev... and maybe Knight). Really impressive group.

Eh...top 2/3rds perhaps. But Riser did a lot of damage in his time here. Fletcher is doing a great job, but it'll be at least another 1-2 years before we get into the top 10.

I would take Long Island, Florida and Ottawa in some form of the top-3.

IMO, there is a big drop off from there. Edmonton would be in the conversation, but they have "graduated" three high-end talents in the last 12 months.


Honestly, Toronto is looking really solid right now and I might even put them 4th. 1. At worst (IMO) Nazem Kadri is an average 2nd line player. Keith Aulie, Greg McKegg, and Brad Ross look like solid depth (at worst) players with top-6 (top-4) upside.

The real wild cards (to me) are Joe Colborne Jake Gardiner and Tyler Biggs. Colborne and Gardiner have boom or bust potential. They have the potential to be a #1 center (#1 defenseman) and Biggs has the potential to be a true power forward.

Got to hand it to Burke for completely rebuilding that system.
