absolutely not... no hockey player that potentially is going to play the next 10 plus years in his hometown market would ever in a billion years suggest theres even a 0.0000001% chance he might leave as a free agent for a higher offer contract.

in fact... even when a player might want a trade because he HATES the team or is being ABUSED... they still usually try to keep the trade request quite hush hush.

when ray bourque was leaving boston… he was respectful to the organization and told them since they had no chance to compete to trade him. he said he wouldn't resign unless its with a contender. but even this gift he gave the team was quite hush hush. most fans still think boston wanted to trade him and it was the teams idea.

when Tavares had almost every intention of leaving the islanders... he never said it. he said to the very last second he might stay. it was important to him not to have those fans hate him. of course, it never worked... fans see through this. but its still what hockey players do. they want to be non controversial and not get the fans booing them

so... the only people that need to be told how wrong they are is anyone that thinks this story matters in the slightest bit. marner will do whatever he does.

my guess... Toronto will pay him and he will stay. my gut says he wants to stay and will stay if he gets the money

There's been one revenge offer sheet in the history of offer sheets.

And, wait for it, it was a 1-year offer to Steve Bernier.

Quite an urban legend...

Until an exec tells Friedman Lou will do it to the Leafs. Then everyone on here believed it.

I don't know why offersheets are such a hot topic. Teams rarely do it. Opens you up as a target and some GMs consider it blasphemy. Yet fans act like its a sure thing...

if he sincerely will not sign an offer sheet, consider yourselves very lucky, Toronto, because the boy is stupid enough to sign just about anything. Just tell him you can only afford $6m. he'll believe you.

He's definitely not imaging a scenario -- he didn't rule it out. He's just not thinking about it and leaving with his agent.

In what negotiating world would you promise not to sign an offer sheet and expect to have any negotiating power. Non-story in Toronto media. Likely doesn't get to that point for all reasons that have stopped offer sheets in past,.

The odds are Marne is gonna resign in Toronto, for a large number, but you have to remember, this is what he agent is gonna take care of, not Marner himself.
If he was willing to, or insistent that it was Leafs or nothing, he would of signed the first offer from the team that came his way, and the team would of been all over making sure that offer was given to him as soon as possible.
This is an agent/GM thing, not a player/team thing

It’s naive to think he’d say anything else. The Leafs offer him $9 but Team B offers him $12, he’s signing the offer sheet.

Although offer sheets haven’t really been used in recent memory, the quality of players who could hit this summer without a deal will probably prompt someone to use one.

Obviously Marner is the one who’s less likely to be matched with the Leafs having to sign AM too. It’s just like Nylander saying he has a guarantee not to be moved. If it comes down to trading Nylander to save Marner, they’ll trade him.

In sports you can’t listen to comments like this and take them as gospel. Far to often, things change.

you might be right... I cant speak for marner

but I have seen other players leave a lot of money on the table.. any of us who say its ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY are wrong and have been proven wrong many times.

I will say that its ridiculous for Toronto people to say... lets short term contract marner or Matthews and get them for 6-8 mill... that's just a total idiot idea

if these 2 players want out... they may take short contracts... but if they went to arbitration theyd get way more than 6-8 mill. assuming the leafs attempted for force feed them a short term deal at 6-8 then we can assumed the relationship is now broken and the players might as well go to arbitration or accept an offer sheet.

a short term offer sheet of 3 years for 10 mill a year costs a first/second/3rd for compensation and now a new team has Matthews or marner for the next 3 years.

any suggestion that you can get Matthews or marner for a ridiculous low contract is just stupid.

but... im going to say that Matthews and marner probably want to stay in Toronto and might leave some money on the table. Tavares left a bit to go to Toronto. its not unheard of. McDavid left a bit when he resigned in Edmonton. sometimes it happens

Maybe I'm paranoid but sure seems like a lot of threads that are presented as legit threads but really are anti-Leafs threads, people hoping bad things happening to them. Is it because JT signed there?

So a Canadian kid (who had the audacity) to tweet pics of him as a kid decides to come home to play for his boyhood team.

Not a chance in hell an American kid would do the same....oh wait. Parise and Suter. They even discussed how cool it would be to play for the Wild at the 2010 Olympics. Sure they were disliked by NJ and Nashville fans but I don't recall many fans of other teams hating on the Wild as much as the hate the Leafs are getting.

Mitch Marner

Born - Toronto
Grew up - Toronto
Family lives - Toronto
Favourite team growing up - Toronto
Current team - Toronto

Anyone delusional enough to think Marner is going to leave Toronto is out to lunch. Marner loves his home city and being a Maple Leaf. This kid bleeds blue and white.

Career Leaf, shut this thread down.

Yikes, Toronto fans really grasping at straws here. Sad.
ummm why are leaf fans grasping at straws, because they drafted a superstar and want to keep him?, and there is some small chance he leaves? seems like other fan bases are grasping at straws trying to steal there talent? when was the last time there was an offer sheet?????, and its the leaf fans grasping at straws lol! must be a joke.
