Can somebody calculate how much more he earns from this deal in Florida versus say somewhere in Canada? The equivalent is probably $12m in canada isn't it?
LOL it's still less than what Marner is making. The difference isn't as big as all would like to say

awesome deal but

Vasi, Point, Kuch @ 9.5M
Stamkos @ 8.5M
Hedman @ 7.75M

that's a lot of dough for 5 players
It is a lot of cap, but when you have great players this is what happens. TB is paying $44.75 for their top 5 paid (and performing) players. The Leafs top 5 make a combined $46.1 so as a percentage of cap space it is on par with other high end teams and in fact is better than some of the other high end teams in the league.

Certainly deserved, but going to squeeze the depth even further after next year. Will Palat be a goner?

The joys of having a team in a fantastic location with no state income tax
How is Florida a great location for hockey? Anyone who claims TB has "great weather" has obviously never been to Tampa, the heat is unbearable.

The tax thing is just a massive cope from jealous fanboys. TB gets these deals because they've been the model organization in the sport since 2015. You don't see other no state tax teams getting discounts like this... I wonder why?

Good for him. Though, I don't see how people can call this a discount. I'd say it's market value

Tampa always just quietly gets their guys locked in.. no drama, no holding out for extra money, no handcuffed their team for massive overpayments or anything.. elc, bridge and then a respectable fair long term deal for most of them.

Easy peasy for Tampa and they show ONCE AGAIN why they are the cream of the crop

Point nets out $5,258,935 in Tampa with a $9,500,000 AAV

For him to net out the same income in the Canadian markets:
Vancouver - $11, 500,000
Calgary - $11,000,000
Edmonton - $11,000,000
Winnipeg - $11,700,000
Ottawa - $12,700,000
Toronto - $12,700,000
Montreal - $12,600,000

EDIT: Corrected the numbers above for $9.5m AAV (new contract extension), vs. $9m (this years salary)

Market value for a #1 C, particularly one with two cups. Considering how underpaid he's been, this is more than fair.

Tampa is now paying market rate for just about all their guys, which means that all of the sudden one of their 4th rounders will become a franchise defenseman. They know how to build a team, and remain the team to beat!
