awesome deal but

Vasi, Point, Kuch @ 9.5M
Stamkos @ 8.5M
Hedman @ 7.75M

that's a lot of dough for 5 players

And all of them at a discount. When players like Bellemare, Bogosian, Maroon, etc. are willing to sign at $1 mil or less, along with their ability to develop prospects, it makes it a lot more feasible to ice a contending team that still has depth.

Vasi is the best goalie in the league, Hedman the best defenseman, Kucherov the best winger, Point a top 10 centre (top 5 in playoffs)

All worth their value, only one they could do without is Stamkos

More like taxes screw up every canadian team in the NHL. Point would need a 11M$ contract in Canads to make the same $ amount.
It's about management though. Wether its a tax thing or not. Look at all the hype about Tavares want to come home to play in Toronto then handcuffs them by asking 11mil a season. Nylander's isnt bad. Matthews deserved it but Marner and Tavares contracts were bad moves

Can somebody calculate how much more he earns from this deal in Florida versus say somewhere in Canada? The equivalent is probably $12m in canada isn't it?

It depends where in Canada. Things have changed but in 2014 Calgary/Edmonton actually had the least cap burden and Montreal had the most. Since then taxes have changed in Canada but the premise holds true. There is a legit difference between provinces. Just like California vs Florida is a massive difference. Heck California is costlier than Canada on average.

As I just mentioned not all Canadian teams are equal. So its not a Canadian vs US thing. It is a regional thing.

However Toronto and Montreal players get massive endorsement deals. That actually is worth more than an increased tax burden. So if anything those teams have an advantage (particularly Toronto as Montreal is even higher from a tax perspective).

Not really a shock that their GM, and cap guru, has their player contracts nicely staggered. They've only got about 70 million committed for 22-23. All the key guys are locked in. Given how they find guys in the draft, it's not to think they'll find replacements for the expiring contracts of Palat and Maroon. If they opt for trades/ufas they'll have the space to add.
