The eligibility of players for junior international competitions is derived from their birth years, which means that only players born January 1st 1993 and later are eligible to play for the U20 team (January 1st 1995 and later for U18 team) in the 2012/2013 season, so yes croAVSfan is right about Nino and Bärtschi being no longer eligible.

Do you know whether this Swiss selection was the best you have available? Looking over the names on the roster it seems that way to me, but I don´t know enough about the Swiss players at this level to be sure.

It should be said that the Czech team that played at this tournament was what the Czech federation calls U19 NT, though since there are usually also older players in it, it might be better to call it the U20 B selection. But definitely not the top team as the Czech U20 was actually busy getting their ass kicked in Sweden during this tourney. Slovak team was also missing the top players as Slovak coaches are currently preparing the team that will play in Slovak league and therefore no players who will play elsewhere (for example CHL) were there. Not sure about the Germans.

I thought that the squads of the Czechs and the Slovaks weren't their top ones... Well the Swiss tested a few 94-born in Füssen, but I believe the core of the WJC will look pretty much the same...

The big name missing in Füssen was Dean Kukan...

a 4-0 win over Slovakia, 24-12 shots.
a 4-8 loss to Sweden. 23-42 shots.

Then played for the fifth place with

Dean Kukan

In this article, they say that he was lent by Lulea to Allsvenksand, a Swedish 2 division team.

Does someone know what the Swedish second division worth is ?

Is that a good thing for Kukan or is he is simply young and needs to train the body first ?

Allsvenskan is not a team but the name of the Swedish tier 2 league. The team he's been loaned to is Asplöven, with which I'm not familiar but I'm pretty sure they're not among the top teams.

Regarding the level of play, Allsvenskan is probably the best tier 2 league in Europe, the top team there aren't far behind the bottom of the Eliteserien. It's not unusual to have players going straight from there to the NHL, Patrik Berglund and Oliver Ekman-Larsson being two recent examples. It's way better than the NLB.

I guess it's a good move for Kukan, he's going to play in a strong league and get more ice time than he would with Luleå.

Where has Enzo Corvi (another strong 92er attacker) come from? He belongs to the rare exceptions of swiss juniors, that I hear about first, when I watch them first. (D.Brunner was such a case for me)

What a nice set of hands and showed good vision and passing skills, the 3 times I've seen him play so far. How has he looked through the entire season? Some more insight in his skill-set please!

He just got a call for the NT, had already one this year but got injured just before. (Have a look at the "sticky" swiss NT-Thread)


During the lock-out, he played together with J. Tavares. And their style of play is quite comparable, IMO (not the same talent level of course).

Not overly big or strong, but very well developed hockey I.Q., calm with the puck, sees the ice and teammates pretty well. He got a nice pair of hands (pretty soft), and is a fine skater. Could improve his finishing skills, cause he isn't the most efficent player when it comes to burry his chances, his shooting skills aren't bad though. Isn't afraid to go to the dirty zones. (oftenly had to play the forechecking-role when playing with Tavares and Byron Ritchie earlier this season.)

He made a lot of progress in the last year, duga described it very well. In my opinion he could dominate the Swiss league in a few years like Damien Brunner did it last year. He's a great talent, a lot of potential, very smart player. But surley not ready yet to crack the roster of an NHL-team. If someone signs him now he'd need at least one, probably two years in the AHL.

If his goal is to play in the NHL, the AHL certainly is the "easier" way to go. He would get more attention and it would definitely help him to adapt to the north american rink size. Guys like Damien Brunner are an exemption.

Agree, although every player is different. Mature and Be dominant in NLA and the scout will pick you up and give you an opportunity. In the case of Nino I suggest, if his situation is not getting better. he seriously should think about it.

They just released the prelimary roster for the U-18 WC.... and they put all the underagers on the roster I expected (hoped), minus Schmidli.

On attack, it's an intersting situation, cause the 95borns are lacking top-end talent as well as depth. Unlike the 96ers and 97ers, when it comes to elite talent.

96ers: Fjala is a lock. And the combination of size, skill and toughness of N.Rod is intriguing. Guys like Suter and T.Meier have convinced both with the NT (u-17 or U-18) as well as with their play in swiss U-20 championship.

97ers: Malgin. He may won't make the team yet (with guys like Hischier, Rod and Fuchs on C) , but with his performance-level he showed on any level this year, they just had to invite him. Look out!


On D: 95ers have both very good talent and depth as well. So the underagers will have a tough time to make the final roster.

96ers might don't have the elite talent like the 95ers or 97ers but beside Maurer, the top talent is untypically big (Harlacher, Schmutz, Kindschi, Heldner)

97ers: I'm sure most have heard of Siegenthaler. And Karrer while not as big or strong as Siegenthaler is a nice offensive talent.

GK: Can't say much about them. But it's been a while since Switzerland has produced anybody close to elite.

Coach: Last chance for Celio, I hope. And if he still can't coach... get rid of him. (May Gaydoul got some more work for Ex-Chlotener...)

Too early, all successful Swiss NHLers moved after they became established national team players. Bertschy is not there yet, he would get stuck in the AHL.
