Schneider with his third straight start, gets a 2-1 win. He's done much better than I thought he would so far, great #'s.
Is he to head back to the WHL next year, and how did he go undrafted?

So where does he go next year? Is he eligible to go back to the WHL? With Oreo likely playing himself into a backup spot the last little bit and Gillies and Poulin likely the tandem for Stockton where does he end up?

He has to go back to junior.

He turns 19 in July so I think his only option is the WHL for another year. The crease will be crowded in Stockton next season so its probably a good thing. Mason McDonald should be joining them and with Gillies and Poulin already there it would be difficult to get playing time.

He was draft eligible in 2015 and wasn't picked.

Yeah, but under such circumstances don't players like that have to go back into the draft? Like Mangiapane and Hunter Smith? I always thought signing undrafted players was only allowed once they were done being eligible for drafts.

Yeah I'm not too sure about the specifics but I'm pretty sure you only need to go undrafted once in order to be eligible to sign an ELC. Although if this were the case I'm unsure why we used picks on Mangiapane and Smith.

You're eligible to sign after going undrafted if you played the entire season in North America the year prior, as long as you sign before the start of your draft+1 junior season.

A little bit more detailed explanation

[FIELDSET="Oiler's gonna Oil"]According to the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, to be eligible to play in the league, a player must have:

(a) had been claimed in the last Entry Draft, or was ineligible for claim under Section

8.4; or

(b) had been eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft, but was unclaimed, and:

1. ii) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was under age 20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except that if such Player had signed an NHL try-out form, which was signed and registered with the League during the aforesaid time period, then the deadline for signing and registering with the League an SPC with such try-out Club shall be the commencement of the NHL Season).’

That explains using the pick on Smith then. But it makes me question why we didn't just sign Mangiapane. I know it was only a 6th round pick but still.

Why is it that the Flames were able to sign Schneider without drafting him first?
Let's see if I can explain this properly.

When you invite a non-drafted to your camp you have a window to sign said player while they are in your camp. We actually signed Turner Elson the same way a few years back.

No room for Poulin. Gillies/McDonald will share the crease next year.
He'll be racking up the airmiles again.

Because with drafting, you own the rights to the player, but don't have to sign him right away and can still evaluate if he's worth signing or not. I believe you have until they're ineligible to play CHL to be able to sign him or not.

You have just under 2 years to sign them. CHL players must be signed by June 1st, 2 years after being drafted.

The playoff race in the AHL is getting tighter. Unfortunately it is not as simple as looking at points since the California teams play 8 games fewer than the rest of the league.

Currently in the Pacific Division the standings are:

Rank | Pacific Division | GP | W | L | OTL | SOL | PTS | PCT
1 | Ontario Reign | 63 | 40 | 18 | 4 | 1 | 85 | 0.675
2 | San Diego Gulls | 63 | 36 | 22 | 3 | 2 | 77 | 0.611
3 | Texas Stars | 72 | 38 | 24 | 7 | 3 | 86 | 0.597
WC | Charlotte Checkers | 70 | 35 | 27 | 3 | 5 | 78 | 0.557
- | San Jose Barracuda | 63 | 29 | 24 | 7 | 3 | 68 | 0.540
- | Bakersfield Condors | 62 | 28 | 26 | 6 | 2 | 64 | 0.516
- | Stockton Heat | 62 | 30 | 28 | 2 | 2 | 64 | 0.516
- | San Antonio Rampage | 71 | 29 | 34 | 8 | 0 | 66 | 0.465

Ontario, San Diego & Texas are all out of reach. So we need to catch Charlotte for that final playoff spot; but to do so we also need to pass San Jose and Bakersfield.

It is an uphill battle for sure, but with our dominant home record and with how difficult the schedules are for the other 3 clubs I think our chances are much better than they normally would be in this situation.

Looking like it will be tough to get in, unfortunate as it would be great experience for the guys we see as future Flames. There is still hope though!

If Stockton wins all of their remaining games, they'll end up with a .558 points percentage, so aren't they basically screwed? If Charlotte wins or goes to OT in a single game, they'll be out of reach.

Basically what you're highlighting is that their tragic number is 1.

That is not even close to being accurate. If we win out they need 7 points. I am assuming that you didn't factor in that winning percentage drops with losses?
