Offensively he does not have the inherent talent to produce. Sean Monahan has a career shooting percentage of 14.9%. Jankowski had a shooting percentage of 17.9% in the AHL and 14.4% in his first NHL season with little to no PP time. Backlunds career shooting percentage is 8.9%. The long and short is while Backlund has had top 6 minutes for the last 5 seasons with the best talent on the Flames and offensively has done nothing spectacular with plenty of PP and regular strength time.
Considering Backlunds possession stats and TOI are so good his point total is very underwhelming.
Offensively Backlund is sub-par in regards generating goals and assists. Nothing highlights that more than Chucky going to the PP and generating almost a third of his points away from Backlund.
What is funny should be how people evaluate players in incorrect ways. Will Backs shoot 6.9% this year... Probably not but to expect a shooting percentage above 11% is highly unlikely.

The first season and a half Monahan did not play with Johnny but rather scrubs like David Jones and Hudler. Edit: I had to add for 2.5 seasons Monahan's wrist was nowhere near 100% and he still put up 27,27,& 31 goals respectively and 63, 58, & 64 points.
Barkov has been playing along with Huberdeau. In 2016-17 Barkov played with Marchessault and Huberdeau. There is a statement that Barkov makes players around him better yet in Las Vegas the following season Marchessault put up 30% more points with line-mates that were not better than Barkov or Huberdeau. Marchessault is on pace for the same number of points this year as last with line-mates struggling. That argument does not hold water.
Scheifele is 2 years older than Monahan.
MacKinnon has played with Rantanen, Landeskog, Stastny, and Iggy before his decline. Until last season MacKinnon and Monahan were neck and neck. MacKinnon's rookie year was Landeskog-Stastny-MacKinnon.
Everybody under-rates Sean and his skills.
Now consider 2 factors:
- How many more points does Sean and Johnny get if Lindholm was here for the last 2 years like MacKinnon has had playing with Rananen?
- How many points does Sean get just having a healthy wrist?
Here are the top scorers under 27 years of age since 2013. Now consider that Sean unlike others had a complete rebuild to grow through. Seguin, MacKinnon, O'Reilly, Kuznetsov, Duchene
FYI Barkov who is often referred to as being better than Monahan is 14th almost 50 points back of Sean.[TBODY] [/TBODY]

Monahan is scoring, and that's great. But you only have to look a little bit to see where his game lacks. I know it's cherry picking but look at the 3-2 goal last night. Monahan doesn't even try to impede the Flyer and he gets an easy tap in.
It happens too frequently for a guy that is expected to lead in all facets of the game. His work in the defensive zone is very much incomplete at this point, and it'll be the difference between him being a Jeff Carter or an Anze Kopitar in terms of bringing value to a team. Both of those guys brought a lot of offensive skill, but only one of them ever contributed around the whole ice.
Monahan is still great even as he is, but I can't help but feel like he could really be the C this team needs if only he got a little more involved when the puck isn't on (and immediately off) his stick in the slot.
He is improving on that and still very young, wouldn't worry too much about it to be honest.
Monahan tied for 9th in league scoring makes my heart warm.
Monahan has been far more engaged this year. I think Lindholm has really helped him and he’s learned a lot from him and of course Peters.

Think this is the first time Monahan has been healthy in 2.5 years. I have not seen Sean smile as much since his first year with Johnny. Sean is a monster and while he does not crash and bang he out smarts his opposition. You can not teach how savvy Monahan is with his game. While not slow Sean combats faster skaters with his anticipation and angles very well. What goes most underrated in Sean's game is his ability to set-up others. Last nights goal in OT by Johnny was Sean threading a sweet pass.
Sean is on pace break 50 goals. Since 2012-13 the only player to break 50 is Ovi. Realistically Ovi, Laine, Point, MacKinnon and Monahan are the only players that have a true shot at 50. Skinner started off hot but will likely cool, Pastrnak plays with Bergeron against the top lines so it will be tough for him, and until San Jose starts clicking Pavelski will be questionable. Sean and Johnny have not had a really hot streak yet. Provided the two of them stay healthy both should have career seasons... To add to that they are still building chemistry with Lindholm.
I expect KacKinnon's line and Sean's line compared all season as to which is better. Me personally I am looking forward to game 83 and on.
While I very much so hope that Monahan gets 50, if his shooting stabilizes to his career norm, he's closer to 41 goals, which I think is still very worth celebrating.
Sure, but let's not forget that due to the goalie equipment changes, shooting percentage is up around the league and for a incredible shooter like Monahan, it's very possible that his new career norm could be in that 17%-19% range, although that would still mean his current shooting percentage (19.2%) drops just a tiny bit.
Even if he scored 50, he still wouldn't be elite. While I very much so hope that Monahan gets 50, if his shooting stabilizes to his career norm, he's closer to 41 goals, which I think is still very worth celebrating.
Plus, I think the Flames tend to take more quality shots under Peters than the throw everything at the net Gulutzan philosophy.
I honestly feel like Monahan could have more goals this year. Even last game he could have had like 5.
