Viewed some of the practices yesterday, and while they offered limited opportunities for evaluations, I did note the following (focused on defense) :
Holmes looked good in yesterdays practice. Excited to see him in scrimmages.
Calisti was a monster in practice. He looks incredibly determined this season. His shot is better than i remember. I hope he can carry it through into todays games.
Seguin was having equipment problems with a skate all practice. Hope he sorts it out because he has limited opportunities left to impress.
The other returning defenders were all competent at practice.
The other new defenders I will reserve any judgement until after scrimmages.

Thanks for the info on Seguin. I thought he had injured himself.

Calisti has a chance to earn himself a spot on the second pairing with O'Rourke, barring a trade. It's a big opportunity and I'm glad that he's taking it seriously.

How did Dickinson look?

Very good. If he's got some finishing ability to go with that elite speed then the Hounds might have another top 6 forward.

Ethan Taylor was shaken up in practice and got helped off, hope he is alright.

I’m assuming you were there this morning.... any other commentary on our potential newcomers? 2002 births like mufarreh or Watson (provided they were in one of the lineups?

Team White
Calisti was the best defenseman on the ice. Inserted himself into almost every rush. Got caught once or twice but probably should have had a forward covering on those occassions.
Halushak seemed competent, nothing flashy.
Wawrow was ok.
Seguin threw a couple checks without taking himself out of the play.
Boudreau and McLean were good. Dintino, Sparkes, Chiddenton, Miller showed flashes. Jacklin looked good but his edges are still suspect.
Propp and Taylor, C both played well.

Team Black
Holmes and Rebek were good.
Brzustowski and Brown were ok.
LeGuerrier played terrible.
Mufarreh, Trott, Tomasini, Kerins, Johnston, Kartye were all good. Timchenko has quite the shot, not sure if he has anything else but boy can he finish.
Zeppa struggled at first but then was steady, and DiPasquo was serviceable.

To be honest, I wasn't really watching for Watson, but Mufarreh showed a lot of the same things we saw last year. He's quick and elusive and has that active stick on defense that Raftis loves so much. I'd like to see him be more aggressive and use his speed to go to the net more often.

CJ Clarke was a man amongst boys tonight. He really dominated physically add pushed around the rookies.

I'm not opposed to him taking up an OA spot for now if we can't land the right defenseman. I just don't see how he could possibly fit on the roster.

Seems like a given for big body 20yr old would dominate rookies, but maybe an option if an OA defenseman is not signed

---

OA Count:
Barrie - 4
Erie - 3
Flint - 2
Guelph - 4
Hamilton - 4
Kingston - 2
Kitchener - 3
London - 5 (including Donofrio and Cotter)
Mississauga - 4
North Bay - 3
Niagara - 5
Owen Sound - 3
Oshawa - 5
Ottawa - 3
Peterborough - 0
Saginaw - 5
Sarnia - 5
Sudbury - 3
SSM - 3 (including Clarke)
Windsor - 3

The thing to note is that there are a lot of OA's in there who are not very good and probably won't be brought back, so there will likely be less OA's capable of filling spots than ones who ultimately will. Therefore, Clarke is the type of guy who may make a roster when in a normal year (when there are typically so many good OA's that far better guys than him are left without jobs) he would likely not even be consdered for a job. It probably won't be in SSM, because that OA spot should go towards a top 4 RD (i.e. Chris Cameron from Barrie, Drew Hunter from Niagara, Nick Grima from Sarnia, maybe Riley Webb from Saginaw) over a top 9 RW.

Interesting, the Sault Star article names the following players:
Brzustowski
Holmes
Boudreau
D'Intino
Dickinson
Watson
Mufarreh
McGuire
Halushak
Tomasini
Savard

It will be interesting to see how many of them they can fit on the preseason roster.
Hounds brass pleased

Grima would be a nice addition. He's a slick passer and solid defender, reminiscent of Tyler Hore.

O'Rourke-Grima
Leguerrier-Calisti
Wale-Holmes/Wawrow

If Calisti has a good season then that defense could make a deep playoff run.

Heroux, Brisson, and Santa Maria among the cuts.

Brown and Halushak among the stays.

That's not inclusive, I will try to find out more. Just from chats with the players as they leave.

It looks to me as if the rookies Watson, Mufarreh, Boudreau, and Dickinson have been too good to not make the team. Raftis and Dean have been singing their praises in the media. Our depth at forward is ridiculous though so I fail see where they fit in.

Trott-Pytlik-Mackay
Johnston-Carroll-Peca
McLean-Kerins-Roth
Kartye

Surely these 10 guys are guaranteed roster spots in my opinion. Then you have

Dickinson, Watson, Jacklin, Mufarreh, Boudreau, Hayton.

Maybe CJ Clarke? Maybe D'Intino or Tomasini?

Something has to give. We can't roll with 16 or 17 forwards to start the season.

Lots of talk of an OA defenseman, but would anyone be interested in a trade like Ryan Roth for Merrick Rippon?

Same age, similar talent. Rippon is a left shot but plays RD. Ottawa could really use some help on right wing and needs to shed a D or two.
