STL won the cup with a balanced payroll. But the three previous cup winners had at least one top-10 nhl salary. There is no single business model that works or doesn't work.

I love Panarin but I agree with this. So far, Panarin has left every team he's played for over contract demands.

He has every right to do so, but it's clear that his MAIN motivation, before anything else, is money.

Some players prioritize winning first, Panarin doesn't. That said, Panarin works his can off and gives it 100% when he's on the ice. He's a baller. But, money and lifestyle rank higher than winning a Cup for him IMO.

Again, his right. But I would not be in favor of paying Panarin Connor McDavid money. The team that does well likely regret it within 4 years.

Chicago is a different situation. They couldn't afford him period.

Ok are either of those 12? Or even 10?
Did those teams have their #1 center at 5.9? their 90 point winger locked up at 5.9? their #2c who if he bounces back from a bad season is a 60-70 point guy at 4.75 a year? This is what you miss. It's not about ONE player. It's about the % of cap hit across the lineup.

Some of the teams supposedly targeting Panarin are trying to sell tickets and convince a skeptical fan base of their commitment to winning. Which can be a valid business rationale for overpaying.

Panarin won't be what wins either of the 3 teams involved, a cup. Let alone multiple.
You can make a case that the 5th overall team last year, with the best defense in the league but lacking offense, would be a serious cup contender with Panarin.

The isles? They are losing Lee and can't seem to figure it out with Lehner. But yeah they'd be better with panarin for sure, they also got swept by the hurricanes in the playoffs though lol

Swept because they couldn't score a goal when they needed one.

They lost three of those four games by one goal. Hypothetically if you put a player like Panarin on the Isles in that second round series and things would have probably looked different.

They also seemed to lose all momentum from a 10 day break or whatever it was.

The reality is they have a full year of experience in Trotz’s system, which should hopefully result in an increase in goals next year regardless. Then factoring in Barzal’s development and the progression of guys like Pulock, Pelech, Toews, Mayfield - they should continue to improve.

IMO adding Panarin and Bob would put them into Cup Contender status, even with the loss of Lee and Lehner.

Yeah I don't know, just my opinion. Alot of hype over the package of bob and panarin but Columbus was arguably a deeper and better team than the isles are now and those two barely got that team into the playoffs with the help of quite a few studs. Panarin and bob at 22+m per year is just crazy

Didn't know Sorokin is in NY and SIGNED.....

.....
He is by the CBA Isles property for a long time unless they decide to trade his rights. Just like every unsigned drafted prospect and even more so as a Russian drafted out of Russia so they hold on to his rights in what feels like forever. He is no FA who can decide to sign with another team. So, your point was? The curious obsession of North Americans with having prospects in NA no matter what?

If anything signing Bob now might influence Sorokin's willingness to cross the pond earlier rather than later. Why would he want to be Bob's backup?

It’s an odd situation. You give him 12 bc he’s Panarin but it’s not a good move. Odd.

Makes the most sense for Florida as this plus bob and then a top 4 D or 2 makes them a contender for a long time. I don’t see the point for the NY teams. You trying to pay Barzal 13 mill? Outside of RFA he would have you over a barrel after JT.

You act like he's for sure coming over and he'll be Patrick Roy right away. Look at Pavel Francouz and Ilya Samsonov buds

The point is, if he's looking for the balling "glamorous" lifestyle there are really only 2 maybe 3 NHL cities in the US he can find that in. So unless he's really poor at geography those parameters would exclude Sunrise.

Then again I have no idea if thise reports are true, just responding to the poster who put that out there.
