I will break it down real simply.

If Ghost ends up regressing a little bit and ends up being a 30 point PP specialist he will end up being a little bit overpaid.

If Ghost remains a 40 point, 2nd pairing level D that is a solid deal.

If he continues to get a little bit better on defense and/or becomes a 50 point player that contract is going to look awfully good in two or three years.

I just don't see much downside to this deal.

In other words (or, rather, almost the same words), exactly what I said on the main boards?

Gostisbehere doesn't need to have any upward trajectory to be good value over the life of the deal.

If he regresses to a 30 point PP specialist, he'd only be marginally overpaid.

If he stagnates as a 40 point mid-pair offensive defender, he'll be fairly paid (probably underpaid, tbh).

If he continues improving to a 50+ point two-way defender (which he was as a rookie), he'll be a big steal.

Long term deals for young players who have already performed well and proven themselves, as Gosistebehere has, have less risk than bridge deals where you may end up paying out the ass once it expires.

$27M to a guy who was a healthy scratch on several occasions this past year.

So who is the deranged person: the GM or the coach?

Hexy loves giving multi million dollar deals to guys who were healthy scratches in their contract seasons.

Did it with MDZ.

Did it with Schenn.

Did it with Ghost.

Rob Ellis and Panotch what a duo. It's amazing how many people wanted a 3 year deal. Blows my mind.

I dig the deal. He'll be well worth it.

Since I have not seen it yet, time to break out the happy dance.
