He had a good last year in the Q, improved offensively and defensively. Then he hit the AHL, and was a bit disappointing for some. He started out well early on, but offensively hit a wall and just couldn't put up numbers consistently. 28 points in 60-something games. He was solid on defense, but just never looked confident with the puck. To be fair, he is a 19 year-old who has historically been one of the strongest guys on the ice suddenly playing against men who are much stronger. I am not too worried, but it does raise questions about how well his offensive game will translate. This year will be a big test for him and go a long way to showing if he has 2nd line scoring upside or will top out as a defensive specialist.

Good to know, thank you.

Has it been verified that Shattenkirk said he would never play in Canada?

As this guy says....Gary VanDecar: Hey Eklund what part of Shattenkirk saying that he would never play in Canada do you not understand Shattenkirk said that he would never play in Canada so Montreal is out of it.

I know there's a few Canadian born players have said it. Never heard an American player say it.

Shattenkirk has never said he wouldn't play in Canada. I think an educated guess would come to that conclusion, but he has never stated such. He didn decline a deal in Edmonton though.

Why would montreal trade a multi-time 30 goal scorer (and had as many as 39) with one of the NHL's best contracts, for a player at a position they don't really need.

This is another proposal that takes zero of the current habs needs into account.

Yes trade what they don't have enough of (top 6 forwards) for what they already are well stocked in (right handed defencemen).

Where is the logic in that?

If you read the whole post, I agree with the idea that it wouldn't make sense from the Habs' perspective. Patches' name came up from two different Habs' fans in the comments section of Eklund's blog post, and I was merely speculating on what a Shatty-Patches trade might have to look like.

In the end, if this rumor truly was sourced by Eklund from anyone connected to the Blues, it was likely as a someone in the Blues' organization trying to get Boston to think the Habs might be targeting a player they are interested in the hopes of getting them to up their offer or bite on a deal they are already considering. Under no circumstances can a deal between MTL and STL be consummated that gives both teams what they need out of the deal. Both teams are (or should be) targeting Top 6 help and both have no need to add (or keep) a RD.

What about Gallagher? Would he be available? I've always liked his game.

Habs can't afford to trade a top 6 forward if another is not coming back. Team is already starving offensively and cannot create a hole in the top 6. If anything the Habs need another etablished 2nd line lw to play with Plekanec. Plus Gallagher is pretty much the heart and spark plug of this team and his contract is great.

That and as said by other posters Shattenkirk is nice but he ain't a need. If he was a left handed shot playing LD then he could be of interest to pair with Weber. But he's not so

We don't need another dman we need a ****in top6 forward.

Galchenyuk vs Shattenkirk would add where we really don't need and subtract where we reaaaaally need.

Our dumbass of a GM is capable of pulling such an idiotic move.

He'll get lynched!

But we're talking about Eklund here.... Guy is a joke! Just check his track record...

Hmmm, are you speaking now about Armstrong? I doubt, I highly doubt Armstrong could pull out that kind trade. (win trade for Blues)

Don't worry, you guys should be thrilled if Army and Bergevin would make trade. I really don't see Habs losing it. Book it.

Still interesting set-up Army vs. Bergevin.

When was Montreal linked to Shattenkirk early on, It sure wasn't at the draft the only D man linked to Montreal at the draft was Cam Fowler and the same with Buffalo but Bob Murray wanted those 1st round picks for him and neither Tim Murray or Bergiven would part with them. If Montreal was interested in Shattenkirk it was only a slight interest because Montreal was more interested in Fowler. Maybe that was after a deal couldn't be struck with Shattenkirk then i don't know.

Montreal was also linked to Nurse/The Oilers at the deadline.

He's never said that. The only thing that's been even close to being confirmed is that he refused to sign an extension with Edmonton. Not exactly a shocker since its...well, Edmonton.

If you listen to folks on message boards, Shattenkirk has threatened to commit suicide if he is traded anywhere but the 1994 NY Rangers.

With Petry and Weber. I don't really see a fit for Shattenkrik in Montreal.

Value wise, Gallagher would probably be fair but i see no incentives from Montreal to do this.

I'd totally buy Shattenkirk at the deadline for 1st +++++ but i think St Louis will have a playoff run too and i doubt they deal him for picks or prospects.

He quoted the relevant section and said Galchenyuk was the only piece he thought the blues may be willing to add for. Its only misleading if you don't read the whole post. Maybe it should have had a link to the article, but was accurate on its face. Edit: It did link the article. There is literally nothing to complain about.

I agree it would be horrible idea for Montreal to do this. However, let's not pretend Gallchenyuk has never been on the trade block. He is on a bridge contract because he and Montreal had a very contentious contract negotiations last time. He fired his agent, because he didn't like his advice on how to deal with Therrien. Now he has had a break-out season of sorts. It is possible that once the last year on his contract started, they approached him about an extension, found his demands unreasonable, and decided he' be available in trade for the right price. If there is any truth to the rumor, which, yes, is doubtful as its Eklund, then Galchenyuk fits as a piece that the Blues might target and that Montreal could suddenly feel they have no choice but to move. Or maybe its just wishful thinking by Blues fans, because that would be a near perfect return for Shattenkirk.

I just would have put a greater separation between what Eklund was saying and what the OP was saying, and clarified that Galchenyuk wasn't necessarily the guy talked about.

I wouldnt trade Galchenyuk straight up for Shattenkirk (contract situation), you kidding me? Galchenyuk is a non starter, we already have 2 top 4 RHD's anyways.
