Senseless poll. Both about equal in value IMO. Which player to take would be based on team need.

It's situational imo but I think in most cases, Seth Jones does more for your team. Can't bring myself to vote against Laine though.

Jones ainec... The addition of Jones to the leafs would make them the cup favorite IMO

Rielly - - - - Jones
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Dermott - Hainsey

with our offence, would be insane

Laine being 2nd at the Rocket race only behind one of the greatest scorers in history at the age of 19 is nothing special, rather have a 3 and a half years older D man because positions bro

Goals don't even affect games

I voted Laine but Jones is also a legit option.

its almost like defenders are notorious for taking longer than wingers to develop and being a legit Norris contender at 23 is uncommon.

Advantages of Jones:
- Top d-men are harder to come by than top wingers
- He'll have a cheaper contract for 3 of the next 4 years

Advantages of Laine:
- He has a decent chance of becoming the best winger in the league
- He's 3.5 years younger

It mostly depends on team need IMO - I can see certain teams taking either of them

he isn't a good playmaker and he isn't good defensively. just a one-dimensional pp specialist

Laine is an elite-play maker as well.

He's the total package offensively, outside of being a line-driver, he has it all.

Agreed, Laine is in his second season and second in Goals while it took Jones to have 6 seasons to have one elite level season.

Playing the wing is the easiest position for young players to break into the league as they have the least amount of responsibility relative to their positioning on the ice.

Seth Jones is 23 years old and just finished his 5 NHL season, he has been trending up every year since he entered the league and as long as he avoids serious injury will be an elite Dman for the next 10 years.

What makes him one dimensional, the fact he scores more goals than anyone not named Ovechkin? Also how is he bad defensively? Please explain, your very vague.

Much easier to find a player like Jones than Laine.

How do you come to this conclusion? Its easier to find an elite young #1 dman then a scoring winger? I'm not trying to downplay how impressive of a scorer Laine has been in his first 2 seasons and how young he is while doing it but as of right now Laine is a sheltered goal scoring winger.

For example here are some of the players who were within a few goals of Laine (44) this year:

William Karlsson (43)
E.Staal (42)
Anders Lee (40)

Only 8 players scored 40 goals or more this season and as you can see above, 3 of these players would not be confused with elite level players (Staal was once in the conversation a few seasons ago).

Just so you know, Laine (70) only outscored Jones (57) by 13 total points. Jones had 24 power play points while Laine had 31 power play points.

Using expected positional scoring can you even say that Laine had a better offensive season than Seth Jones?

What makes him one dimensional is that he is bad defensively. He also isn't good without the puck on his stick. He's a one trick pony. For a guy that plays on a stacked offensive team he sure doesn't get a lot of assists. It would be beneficial for him and the team to produce more at even strength.
