Empoli beats Lecce in a dreadful game between 2 teams with 4 losses in a row, and all but confirm their stay in Serie A for another year. Bottom half teams in Italy this year play some ugly footy.

In the Coppa Italia today, Juve and Inter drew 1-1 in Turin. Cuadrado scored in the 83rd to go up 1-0. Lukaku put away a penalty that was basically Bremer missing the ball with his head and it hit his arm. Lukaku then got a red card after reacting to the crowd. After the game, Cuadrado and Handanovic got into it and both saw red as well.

Fun.

Just to note that Lukaku got red carded because he celebrated his goal the same way he did with the national team. But hey, when you play rube, you get a yellow card for that too! Also, he got booed and called a monkey (or more precisely "scimmia del cazzo") by "fans" and the ref did nothing, as usual.

Cuadrado went around looking for troubles, provoked everybody, pushed Handanovic, punched him and surprisingly didn't dive as he usually does. Both him and Handa got red carded, which ironically is a gift to Inter because, well, Handa is well past his expiry date.

As for the match, it sucked ass.

Lukaku got booked for provoking the fans. It's a well-known bookable offense in Italy, and there's nothing controversial about the booking.
(and I don't think it was a one-time response to racial abuse as he did the same vs Sweden)

The racists in the stands are a different matter and shouldn't be an issue for one ref to resolve.
It's pathetic and inexcusable, but needs to be sorted at a higher level, systematically.
I understand he probably felt awful and angry... But getting yourself sent off doesn't help.

No wait, Lukaku celebrates exactly like this with the national team and it's fine.

Leao celebrated like this in Napoli and it's fine.

And you tell me that Lukaku was provoking those racist SOBs? Who was he provoking against Sweden? HA! But against rube, he gets booked AND sent off for the next game. Saw that shit before countless times.

Look for Maresca celebration after scoring against Toro or Bonucci's "wash your mouth celebration" to opposing fans... there are countless of these, every week basically. Bookings happen VERY rarely and certainly NOT with celebrations which have happened before without any problem.
You can talk about provocations with Totti too back then (this became iconic actually)

Yellow? Yeah, dream on really...

Rules were set a while ago. The ref must indicate the happening of racist chant of sort and can stop the game. The fact that it never happens despite the harsh reality is totally another matter but the issue IS also on the ref.

I understand he probably felt awful and angry... But getting yourself sent off doesn't help.

It would have never happened in any other game.

This a Serie A rule, in place to prevent fans getting riled up and doing dumb / violent stuff.
If the ref thinks the act is meant to enrage / demean / infuriate the fans, it's a yellow card.

How he celebrated for Belgium doesn't matter in this case.
I'm not saying his celebration should be a yellow, or that he's not right to shush racist chants - all I'm saying is that is the rule.
It's the same rule in some countries too, for example Portugal.
(CBA to find the video right now, but for example, Petar Musa of Benfica - then of Boavista, scored a winner in a game, celebrated in front of the opposing fans, got sent off cause he got a second yellow for it)

It's so seldomly enforced, it's more of a meme, plus that buffoon of a ref didn't even notice until that diver son of biiiip of Cuadrado told him. Look at the videos.
We might add that those racist biiip in the stands were already riled up way before any celebration, that's the average thug you get in an italian stadium.
Point is I fail to see that celebration as offensive/provoking but whatever.
Never change Italy...

Then and there
Lecce pull level against Napoli at 51 minutes, first hitting the bar and then Di Francesco quickly scoring from the rebound.

Edit: bad mistake by Lecce, as defender Gallo tries to drop the ball for keeper Falcone, but the latter fumbles the ball in his hands and it goes in.

Then and there
Milan has been pushing to score whole match, and it looked like Giroud had finally scored the winner on 89th minute, but it was disallowed for handball.

Milan can ill afford to lose points at home against the likes of Empoli in the fight for CL spots.

Then and there
Milan pretty much rests everyone from the starting line-up. They chance 10 players from the Napoli match starting line-up, only keeper Maignan remains. It's a big risk as Milan needs poinst to stay in the top 4 contention.

Edit: terrible start for Milan as Bologna scores after only 35 seconds.

Then and there
Milan has gotten more into the match as it as progressed, but it has still been a disjointed performance. At least Pobega manages to score with a nice shot after some favourable pounces around the penalty area.

Then and there
Leao and Brahim Diaz must enter the match after 70 mins, as inefficient Origi and De Ketelaere are yanked for Milan seek to turn current tie into a win.

Edit: Draw doesn't seem like a disaster now given the circumstances, but we''ll see how meaningful it ends up being at season's end.
