Fair, I just don't see a scenario where Nyquist's AAV is that low. Unless it's a 1 year deal. I'm a bit surprised Khan said this. Even at 4 years I don't see it being less than 4x4.
That doesn't seem to make sense, Nyquist is two years older when signing his deal and he's got two 25 goal seasons under his belt -- Tatar had one 19 goal season. I'll believe it when I see it, Khan.
Two. Or whatever leadss him to UFA
So save money for 2 years, and then have to pay him 5-6 million in 2 years?
That sounds like a bad plan to me.
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/n...1/detroit-red-wings-nhl-free-agency/29561563/but the Wings have several restricted free agents left to sign, starting with Gustav Nyquist, He's scored nearly 30 goals each of the past two seasons, so expect him to want in the $5 million annually range.
If Datsyuk and Franzen aren't on LTIR at season start, somebody has to move. If they are, fine, but it pushes the problem only for the future and just same decisions come later.
Update:
1. Datsyuk - 7.500M
2. Zetterberg - 6.083M
3. Nyquist - 4.750M
4. Franzen - 3.955M
5. Richards - 3.000M (+1M playoff bonus, won't affect this year's numbers)
6. Tatar - 2.750M
7. Helm - 2.128M
8. Abdelkader - 1.800M
9. Miller - 1.350M
10. Sheahan - 950k
11. Jurco RFA (estimated ~950k)
12. Andersson - 815k
13. Pulkkinen RFA (estimated ~800k)
14. Glendening - 628k
15. Ferraro - 600k
1. Green - 6.000M
2. Kronwall - 4.750M
3. Ericsson - 4.250M
4. Quincey - 4.250M
5. Smith - 2.750M
6. Kindl - 2.400M
7. DeKeyser - 2.188M
1. Howard - 5.292M
2. Mrazek - 738k
Other costs:
2014-15 Bonus overage - 740k
Weiss buyout - 1.067M
Current figures Total without estimations: 70.729M
Salary Cap 71.400M
= Cap space 0.621M (with 13+7+2 = 23 roster)
Some sources include 575k Andy Miele at Nhl roster which messes figures, but I don't believe that happen. My figures were counted with all Jurco, Ferraro and Pulkkinen up. Miele down, Tangradi down, Ouellet and & Marchenko down.
I've searched some contract comparables and based on Linden Vey (1M) and JP Pageau (900k) Jurco is gonna get that level numbers. Pulkkinen is going to get less, like Jeremy Morin numbers (800k). 34 games of Nhl experience and 8 points n those games just won't give you more.
When both are signed for combined ~1.7M, we are ~1.0-1.1M over the cap.
Then we could burn Kindl to minors creating 925k room and have a 23-man roster, but it still keeps us 200k over the cap.
It forces us to trade a guy like Drew Miller, whose caphit will fit as best solution for the problem. Of course, we can dream about the Kindl trade which would open more space, but I just don't believe it will happen.

Excellent write-up. Thanks for posting this. Do you have confirmation regarding the bonus overage of $740K? I have seen it posted here, but I haven't seen it mentioned on any of the cap sites or by the beat writers.
I would guess that if Franzen is on IR at the start of the season (due the concussion issue), his career is likely over.
The Wings should have taken the decision away from Franzen a long time ago by making him a compliance buyout. His quality of life is going to be equal to that of a potted fern if he gets another concussion or two. I can't see them letting him suit up again but like Kenneh says "you can't go out and pick up 30 goal scorers at Meijer Thrifty Acres".
Every situation is different. Every guy in the game runs the risk of severe injury or even death every shift they play. A first concussion can be the one that handicaps a guy. Sure it would seem guys with multiple concussions would be more likely to suffer long term but I am not a medical professional nor have I seen Franzen's chart so I am probably not qualified to say what he or they should or should not do.
"I was in a really dark place, maybe not the first month because you think it's going to get better, but then when it doesn't get better, you start wondering."
He said he basically didn't get out of bed the first two months.
"I got up and tried to do whatever and got a migraine and had to shut right down," Franzen said. "The last month, it's been progressing slowly, but steadily getting better. I still got a lot of issues, but at least I can get through workouts and get something done during the day."
He's seen several doctors, including specialists, and tried various procedures, like acupuncture.
"I guess my brain is getting too big for my skull, like I'm taking in too much," Franzen said.
The more he does the harder it is on his brain.
Let's hear it straight from the Mule's mouth:
He also hasn't been able to practice with the team since the incident in January, so yeah sounds like that's perfectly normal for a guy in his 30s. I'm sure he just got his bell rung!

You must have missed Franzen's most recent interview, where he's said he's training hard this off-season and was about to ramp up his workouts to 2 a days. He hopes to be ready for training camp and said that had the Wings advanced past round 1 he would have tried to return last season.
technically, what he said is true since the team hasn't practiced together since april.
