It doesn't matter what Botts said, he's still building a team that's intended to win in the future, not today. Wasting high value future assets like 1sts and prospects on 2-3 year stop gap defensemen is pointless now.

Its not just building for the future, its building a sustained winning franchise. Its going to take time to fill the system up with actual legit prospects who can then be used to fill holes or flipped for someone who can fill holes.

First we need to be good enough to worry about filling holes or have young guys step in for guys that will get overpaid.

This is what people the haters with an agenda don't understand. Murray f'ed this franchise up by trading away picks and not building this team through the draft when we were loaded with picks.

Botts understands that we are going to go through pain but in the end we will rave replenished our prospect pool and sustain winning. Some fans here think a GM can wave a magic wand and everything is fixed.

We are loaded with picks again and people are upset about trying to build a winner.

Sabres are 1 of 10 teams to have no players filling for arbitration. That's a good thing right? Reinhart's contract situation makes me nervous.

I didn’t realize that hiring a terrible coach, taking losses for all your most valuable roster pieces, and closing yourself off of multiple avenues of talent acquisition were integral parts of long term planning.

I agree.

If you're arguing for trading a 1st rounder/top prospect for a 30+ yr old with 2-3 years term... we're at an impasse.

I too have read Tim Murray's book on GM'ing.

This is why the "This franchise is an absolute mess" thread annoys me.

Yeah there have been some moves that haven't been great, and haven't been what we wanted but it's such an over-reaction. Ottawa, Montreal, NYI, and maybe vancouver are probably the only teams that can be defined as an "absolute mess" right now.

People mad at Murray for trading away futures to rush something that blew up in his face now advocating for Botterill to trade futures to rush something. Ok.

Why don’t we just do it right instead? Players are becoming contributors at an earlier age and it will take no longer doing it the way it should have been ****ing done the first time when we amassed a war chest and then traded it away for three players all available for different issues in the room...and guess what ****ing happened to the room?

Bring in quality character vets and talented youth.

Oh wait...that’s what we’ve done. The thing everyone hates because they wanted to push forward with a team that fell to last place and had a room on fire.

Time is a flat circle.

The teenagers, the teenagers!!!!

“I don’t want to talk about the new GM making the team worse, here’s some whataboutism over a trade from 3 years ago.”

If Hutton makes the team worse we wont' resort to the fallacy of presupposing that in our rebuttals. Until then, let's see him play a game.

Except people are pointing to the chart that literally reads “the Buffalo Sabres net-lost skating talent” as evidence we’re going to be better.

The chart tracks adds and losses of wins above replacement. It shows they added more WAR than any other team at this point.

You're trying to make people read the LITERAL OPPOSITE of it shows. This is insane.
