4th liners are in this weird spot.
Like, all three of them should be NHL players and I'll stress to no end that having no black holes is the one thing winners mostly have in common.
At the same time, you also really shouldn't spend money on them and going for "good 4th liners" is almost always bad value.
That sounds hard to balance but there are constantly random players available who fit that. Kevin Rooney. Colin Blackwell.
Because the thing is, there's no such thing as a "good 4th liner." A good 4th liner is a 3rd liner. And if he's not, then Nobody Jones can replace him for $725k.
And before somebody brings up Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck, they're closer to a 2nd line than a 4th line. Trotz absolutely adores them and they're all way more talented than 4th liners. Cizikas has 20 goals multiple times.
Don't play Brett Howden, don't pay for reputations, and put NHL replacement-level players on a line together for $2.5m total. It's the easiest thing in the world.
