Sabres' Ristolainen doesn't know if he'll be part of the changes

GettyImages-1130532897.jpg

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - The Sabres were in first place on Nov. 28 and it all came crashing down. It was a loss to Tampa Bay that started it all, and now the Lightning have come crashing down too after being swept by Columbus in the first round of the playoffs.

It seems like Rasmus Ristolainen is at a crossroads in his Sabres career. He never thought he’d be home already after the 10-game winning streak, “The way it started it’s hard to imagine you end up where we are right now.”

Ristolainen will be 25 just after next season starts. He was the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and has been used as a No. 1 defenseman by every Sabres coach that has stepped behind the bench.

There have been times where he has absolutely looked the part, but there have been more times where he’s just looked confused and out of sorts. I asked Ristolainen if he needed a change of scenery or if he wanted to stay and be part of the solution. He never said yes and he never said no, “I’ve been here six years and it’s a similar situation every year, so it’s tough.

“It gets tougher every year, you want it more and more and it’s still not there.”

What's your best hypothetical Botts Risto trade?

Ristolainen for Artem Anisimov, Jake Wise, *Conditional 2020 1st, 2022 2nd rounder

*If Blackhawks miss the playoffs, it becomes a 2020 2nd

Not trading him and finally using him in the right role?

But if it's a foregone conclusion, I want to trade him for an elite shutdown D that doesn't get the respect he deserves because he doesn't put up points. 1 for 1, no other wrinkles. Someone that can play all the tough, shutdown, heavy lifting minutes so that Dahlin doesn't have to. You know, the sort of player we should've brought in years ago for Risto (and years before that for Myers).

Every time this thread is bumped, i fear a picture of Risto lifting a tire or a truck.

I’m on the “we need to acquire more good players not less” train. Risto may not be an elite defenseman but he should be a useful d man on a good team. Stop playing him like he’s the best defenseman in the league. 18-20/night with some PP time against middling competition. Risto Is probably still a 35pt defenseman

I'm still for Risto Nugent Hopkins trade, neither can play D but Hopkins can play center and replace Risto's point totals and more.

I'm not in the "we have to trade Risto" camp. I'm not at all opposed to seeing a full year of Pilut-Risto in a 2nd/3rd pair role

I am definitely open to trading him, I'm just terrified of what Botts is capable of. My initial post wasn't what I WANT, it's an expression of my fear. ;)

Someone already said this but it bears repeating: Paul Heyman is possibly the greatest wrestling booker of his era and his biggest strength was taking guys who were flawed and putting them in positions that emphasized their strengths and hid their weaknesses. Our organization has literally done the exact opposite with Risto by insisting on using him in a role that hides his strengths and exposes his weaknesses, and the price we are going to pay is having to give him up for trash because we sabotaged his value by using him in such a stupid manner. This organization just needs to stop hiring people who are totally incompetent.

Will fix everything
While the Montour trade makes it MORE likely Risto gets traded, I still think the most likely scenario this summer is he stays. I certainly don't think its impossible he's moved, but

I still believe he's a top 4 d-man/PP specialist. I think the best comparison is Dion Phaneuf, actually. Physical d-man, great offensive tools.....don't want him logging 25+ a night on your blueline.

Given the offensive dynamic on the left side (Dahlin/Pilut) i'd be fine with looking for more o f a "defensive" minded RHD in Risto's spot....but I think we'd be find with

Dahlin-Montour
Pilut-Risto

Going into next year.

Agreed. If there's a risto trade that works for us, I'm game. If that trade fills a #2 center role, or a #3/4 RD spot, or adds a premier prospect, we should do it. If that type of trade isn't out there, we keep Risto.

The oft mentioned Risto for JT Miller trade... I like JT Miller. But that trade doesn't solve our center problem and creates another hole we need to fill on defense. I don't care if the value appears right, roster construction matters more.

And obviously, we cannot afford to do another dumb trade for shit depth and crap futures.

I'd love to turn Risto into Pesce. I doubt Carolina would be interested, given he's on an amazing contract and they have their puck movers, but he's exactly the kind of guy I'd like to bring in. Defensive warrior in every aspect. Give him all the tough defensive assignments and let Dahlin and Montour flourish.

Dahlin-Montour
X (Scandella/McCabe?)-Pesce
X-Pilut

To think that undrafted rookie Pilut was the first (!) competent pairing partner of his whole NHL career. Scandella worked for a brief while last season, but that's about it.
Then you add the amount of minutes and the ill-fitted role he's been used in.
I'm not denying his shortcomings, but the guy hasn't had much of a chance so far.

The trade rumor I heard regarding Ristolainen was not JT Miller it was Cirelli + Callahan as a dump. Which admittedly seems improbable, as I can’t imagine they would give up Cirelli unless they thought they had too much money tied up in centers when he gets if his ELC.

Well the basis is that we're trading a consistent 40 point defenseman for a 20 point one. But yeah...

That's... not the way to compare defensemen. Besides, Carolina already has a significantly better version of Risto, in Dougie Hamilton. They're not going to trade their elite shutdown defensemen for a shitty version of Hamilton.

I would trade Risto, SJ 1st, Nylander, and Borgen for Pesce.

Dahlin-Pesce would be the best pair in hockey for the next 5 years.

Love Pesce, but that's a Tim Murray move. We lack enough organization depth as is.
