I'm happy for the guy. He had a crazy over the top thing happen in his life and by all accounts hes a great guy. This is obviously a filler move. Not a big deal, pun intended.

Also, a ringing endorsement can mean anything from this guy is the best dman I've had on any team ever to this guy is a great locker room presence and will be an excellent 7th dman.

So what are the chances Jack MF Johnson is protected over someone like Lindgren come expansion time? Lindgren has never played in Martin’s system before, so I could potentially see us keeping JMFJ long term if he fits in with this team like he did in Pit under Martin.

Pretty bad. Johnson just got a 1 year deal barely over league minimum because an assistant coach recommended him. Lindgren is a pretty integral part of the team and would make more than that easily if he had to sign today

Dolan told Gorton you’re only allowed to buy out Lundqvist if you put a player in front of Igor who truly embodies the trash we put in front of Lundqvist for his whole career.

Judging by that metric this signing is a resounding success.

He won’t be protected over anyone. There’s nothing to worry about. He’s a one year, damn near league minimum veteran stop gap for the left side. Maybe he can play well for 60 games and fetch us a pick at the TDL. Not tripping over this.

Ok this is actually starting to bother me but I look at it this way: if Jacques Martin can improve this team’s defense, I’d happily pay this price. It’s just bizarre to me that a coach known as a defense guru could want to bring in literally one of the worst defensemen in the league.

Pretty amazing takes in the main board about this signing. Almost as if everyone believes the Rangers are contenders and Johnson will only slow things down.
Folks need to step away from the ledge and relax over a 1 year/1m cheap band aid of a contract. This next season is about gauging how the younger players are developing. People thinking Johnson will take time away from a prospect like Miller making his way into the lineup are out to lunch. We won’t remember Jack Jonson this time next year. Stick to the plan... defense will take at least another season to get going.
Yep. He’s our version of Mets’ Adrian Gonzales.

BTW, I know we're 8 pages into this so I'm a little late but I won't forgive myself if I don't say this.

Jack Johnson is what Penguins fans did when it was announced we signed him.

Oh yeah, I forgot these hockey geniuses are infallible. You need a better argument than appealing to authority. Once again, being good in the lockerroom is fine, but being good in the lockerroom and being a good player is not mutually exclusive.

LOL I’m talking about current players buddy. “appealing to authority” my goodness were talking about a sport.

Or maybe just maybe a Jack Adams winning defensive specialist who’s been coaching in the NHL since the 80’s knows something that stat nerds on Twitter don’t?

All that hard work to clean up the roster going forward and then THIS. I don't get it, at all. I guess the NYR office is signalling the rebuild isn't over. It's like a constant scrapyard for defensemen.

Another fringe move that the fan base is going to panic about for no reason. Warm body veteran for a team that has two LD with any meaningful NHL experience on the roster. Known quantity to your new defense coach. Known to be a good locker room guy.

But sure, this is a catastrophic signing that tests people's faith in Gorton. Totally reasonable.
So we traded a 2nd for Jack Johnson?????

Naw. We traded our severed Pirate & a 2nd rounder in 2021 for $4.65 M in cap space and some fancy "future considerations", which soon will be announced that it amounts to Pavel Datsyuks old jockstrap and some old gum Tomas Holmström spit out on the ice while grinding it out in front of Madman Roy:s crease. Jack Johnsson happened to be following that foul stench and snuck in the back door of MSG when it was carried in... and VOILA! ;)

His metrics are brutal. Beyond brutal.

He’s slow as f***. He’s old and he cannot defend anyone with speed. He’s a defensive defender who can’t defend. Sound familiar ?

we move staal for cap space- we all get that, but then we sign jack Johnson who gets a ringing endorsement from both JD and Martin.

and tbh, staal was a good locker room guy too.
