Who cares. It’s for 1 year, it’s buryable.

I think people are still shell shocked from the days where the Rangers needed to sign guys like this to long term deals in order to build the team because they didn’t have any prospects of value and significance. This is not the case anymore. This is a depth signing at best.

and yes, I hate Jack Johnson. I think he’s terrible. But maybe Hajek gets a bit more fire up his ass to make the team. Who knows. And again:

Who cares.

Im shell shocked by the fact we traded Staal with a draft pick and then added Staal and never got the pick back.

I’m no fan of this move, not by a long shot. However I will remain as optimistic as I can.

Maybe he will be ok in a sheltered role? Maybe? Idk. Maybe Tony can make him look ok? Better than Hajek at least?

This is a move with which we can attribute to JD and Martin tho, right? Martin coached him in Pitt and JD signed him in Columbus.

I won’t get too worried about it until he actually is being overused though. However the fear is there that they’re going to pair him with Trouba. 1.15 mil for 1 year tho so he’s almost entirely able to be buried.

Hear me out. I'm not the most positive, and I can't stand Jack Johnson......HOWEVER:

Steve Emminger was universally hated when he came to the Rangers. He went from "we're just happy Voros is gone" to "this guy stinks in preseason" to "this guy is playing alright" to "why is Bickel playing the playoffs over Emminger?"

Basically he reinvented his game to become a dependable and steady bottom pairing role player. He was great.

Maybe Johnson has it in him?

its 1 mil for 1 yr so not end of world. really. but to me, seems less than lateral.

we have not addressed the gaping hole on the left side either
How would you liked for them to addressed the gaping hole on the left in free agency?

Almost anyone else would be an improvement on signing Jack Johnson
Ok well that didn't answer my question at all.

Here's the answer: There was no one in free agency that was going to fix the LD woes. With Johnson, without him, it wasn't gonna get fixed and it won't be fixed until we either promote a prospect or make a trade. Get over it.

Ok you want some alternatives
Andy greene
Kulikov
Chara
Mirco Muller
Oscar Fantnberg
None of these players are great and some are bad but none are NEARLY AS BAD as this guy

And at the end of the day none of those guys would have fixed our defense, so the result would have been the same. The Rangers aren't contenders next year, this will effect absolutely nothing about the Rangers when they actually are ready to compete.

Jesus, it's like you believe the Rangers signed this guy to be a long term solution and a part of their core. It's a one year deal to do a favor for a guy as a stop gap while they wait for Miller. If someone beats him out in camp he goes to the A. Big. f***ing. Deal.

Oh, and Chara?????

Then like i said to you in the previous thread why get rid of a 2nd to get rid of staal. Coulda done everything they needed to without getting rid of that contract.

you don't need to fix the defense with one move to be successful. just don't sign the worst defenseman in the league. it's not rocket science.

This is a depth move through and through. The end result of next season will be exactly the same as it would have been had they not signed him or signed any of the other jabronis you mentioned. The overreaction is absurd.

I'm saying this right now - if he plays more than 41 games (assuming 82 game season) this next season I'll be shocked.

I wouldn't have made this signing, and I don't like this player, but the end of the world for the Rangers this is not.

But hey, at least you can bitch about something, right?

"The fact Johnson is being paid $300K over league minimum and still only has an eight percent chance of outperforming the deal says it all. He will likely be the league’s worst defenceman this season."

they cannot.

simple as that. the free agent class is abysmal. jack johnson is abysmal.

the only way is via trade or promotion.

sadly, its looking like brendan smith. hajek or perhaps k'andre.

or ADA moves over.

This whole situation can be made a lot better by NYR getting a legitimate first pairing ld. Get a guy who will skate with Trouba and kill penalties like mad, and let Johnson and Smith the sheltered third pairing.
