Rink rust is real. Sometimes you can go 2 months without playing without rust and feel great but other times you can feel rust after not playing for 2 weeks. My point is dont get too high or too low over players in mixed squad preseason games.

Problem seems to be that he's been making the same mistakes in the past couple of games that we saw over and over last season

I was making a general statement from my own playing experiences. It was not meant as a promotion or defense of any one individual player.

Was at this game yesterday, here are my thoughts...

The great:
- Gerbe and Grabner are super speedy players. Gunna be nice on the 4th line.
- Clendenning looks awesome, he needs to make this squad
- Kreider is definitely throwing his weight around more
- Zib is going to be a star
- Miller looked his usual self, what I expected of him
- Vesey rather dominant as usual--covers a lot or ice, had some bad turnovers but also made a lot of space for himself.
- Gilmoure was a nice surprise. Has a knack for the net

The bad:
- Gropp needs to develop in Hartford
- Bodie is SO underdeveloped physically. Cerebrally he can think the game but he just can't get it done in the end

The Glass:
- Lappierre was very average, at best... Did not look good at all against a mostly nhl squad... Just more of glass, please let go of him Gorton
- Girardi looks completely lost. He can't even think the game anymore. That egregious turnover in the D zone I think in the 1st period was absolutely horrific. Minimal good decisions made, looked completely clueless in the D zone, and looks super lazy--hes definitely coasting out there.

That is all for now.

Yes, I`m very positive about Zib even possible elite talent.

I`ve him at 75 pts. this season.

Why is this bad? Most reports I read here said Gropp was a pleasant surprise.

75 points? That's crazy talk.

That would have put him in the top 11 last season. That would be awesome. It would be great to see a Ranger in the top 11 of points again. Its been a long time. The last top 10 point producer we had was Gabs (86 in 2010)

McRae shouldn't have been playing. That's just a complete waste. Lapierre playing all 3 concerns me because to me it means they want to get a real good look at him, especially with Jooris down.

Chris Brown is another waste too. I don't mind playing kids and prospects but having Brown and McRae in is just a complete waste. If we're counting Lapierre that's 3 forwards that really have no business being in camp at this point taking up spots in a game.

Defense I didn't have an issue with the guys dressed but I think it's time to make another set of cuts. Brown, McRae, Bodie, Paliotta, Gropp, Nieves, Fontaine, Tambellini, Andersson, Day, Graves, Hughes, Summers, and Hellberg can all go.

Leaves them with 22 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 goalies. I left Kovacs, Stromwall, and Fogarty up front as I'd like to get another look at the first two and a look at the latter. Also they have a back to back on Monday/Tuesday. Maybe for that reason you keep another D around too.
This makes the most sense. With the exception how everyone raved about Gropp, maybe give him another look.

Gropp had a much better game. I hope he can cut it in the AHL all year (if he goes there). He was not great but quite good. Nice surprise is right after Traverse City and his first game

Did you catch Kreider's comments about Zibanejad?

You'd think he was talking about Peter Forsberg, haha..

Safe to say he's incredibly impressed.

Not really, he looks really promising with a good chemistry line -
and if he can stay healthy, some if(s), but it`s indeed possible.

He's barely broken 20 goals and 50 points and you think he's potting 75 points this season? Come on. I like Zibanejad and think he'll have a good season, but it's insane to think he'll score 75 given how few players actually reach 75 points on a season nowadays.

Zinbads last 3 years in Ottawa looked like this:

2013-2014 69 GP - 16 G - 17 A - 33 Pts = 0,48 PPG
2014-2015 80 GP - 20 G - 26 A - 46 Pts = 0,58 PPG
2015-2016 81 GP - 21 G - 30 A - 51 Pts = 0,63 PPG
TOTAL 230 GP - 57 G - 73 A - 130 Pts = 0,57 PPG

Considering that he is replacing Derick Brassard - that put up these numbers the past 3 years:

2013-2014 81 GP - 18 G - 27 A - 45 Pts = 0,56 PPG
2014-2015 80 GP - 19 G - 41 A - 60 Pts = 0,75 PPG
2015-2016 80 GP - 27 G - 31 A - 58 Pts = 0,73 PPG
TOTAL 241 GP - 64 G - 99 A - 163 Pts = 0,68 PPG

I would like to see something like this:
80 Gp - 25 G - 40 A - 65 Pts = 0,81 PPG

Anything better in his first year is a real big plus IMO (especially considering us getting a second rounder from them as well)

But I think we can expect to see something closer to this:
82 Gp - 23 G - 33 A - 56 Pts = 0,68 PPG

75 points (0,91 PPG) and we make out like bandits
Do not see that.

Time will tell...

Zib will get #1 PP unit minutes and top 6 minutes, and offensive zone starts. Rangers have great creative passing forwards so absolutely doable - Mika Zibanejad has elite talent for sure with great finishing.

Jeff Gorton hit a gold mine in that summer trade window - and I`m excited about Brandon Pirri as well. :)

@BBKers Yes, I`m happy if he get about 60 pts, but I feel Zib use his shot more often without thinking about it. I remember we discussed Derick Brassard and his shot which he used to seldom last seasons here. Overall Zib is an upgrade in my view - I hope I`m not wrong watching him in these two pre season games. But overall I`m very positive about him, and it looks like he is well prepared for a new season as well which is a good omen for us fans.

If Zibanejad scores 75 next season, I'm going to buy an authentic jersey with his name on it. No joke.

I think he'll break 60. Don't think he'll break 70, let alone 75.

Great post.

Zib has been great in the pre season but lets not become Devil fans, where even mediocre performances are a harbinger for super stardom.
