Gregg Williams is probably so proud of his guy for that helmet to the knee.

Gotta be pretty depressing for Cody Kessler

He went out and performed the best of any QB last year

Only for team/coach to never give him chance the following year and instead favoring Brock who failed miserably in Houston and was given away by Texans

Kessler was handed the starting job. He was getting the most reps in OTAs and minicamp and even to start training camp. The job was his to lose, and he lost it by not being very good.

The truth is no one has even won the job. Of the three, Osweiller merely looked the least worst. Kessler was really bad. Kizer just looked too inexperienced. Osweiller has been ok in practice (but ****ing terrible in two preseason games. Hogan was never given a real chance to play even though some practice observers think he's looked better than Kessler throughout camp.

Hogan and Kessler are essentially the same QB. Hogan is bigger and a bit more nimble but below average physical traits.

I think the only point about them is Hogan would probably win the 3rd QB job over Kessler if this was being judged solely on performance.

The thing is I like Kessler. He's a good decision maker. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the ability to make the plays he sees. He also got hurt too easily and too often last season.

Kessler is safe. That's why he will be a top back up. QB is the one position a coach doesn't want competition. It creates tension. Another reason why teams avoided Kap and Cutler and Romo. Opting for clearly less talented options.

Also much cheaper

Guys like Kessler will take dirt cheap deals compared to a more talented QB such as the one's you listed as potential backup

That is what NFL wants

They want players to go low and not high on hits to receivers

If you don't like that you need to change rules again to allow defenders to actually hit guys and stop flagging them with this defenseless receiver BS

That hit used to be a dirty hit, but now it isn't as you have to hit guys somewhere. They don't need to change the rules as the risk of injury for these hits is less than head shots.

As a 3rd round pick last season, Kessler's 4 year rookie deal was worth $3.4 million total over the 4 years. So, he's around $850K per season.

In terms of other teams being interested in Kessler, the Browns are going to keep 3 QBs. Just a matter of which ones they want.

Most teams depending on the quality of their starter and the backups can elect to go with 2 guys on the 53 man roster and leave their 3rd stringer on the practice roster, but he is then susceptible to be claimed by another team.

I think the Seahawks the past couple of years have gone with Wilson and Jackson, and then Boykin as their 2 QBs on the 53 man roster.

NE is going to keep Brissett on the 53 otherwise, they risk another team claiming him off the practice roster.
