I’d wager yesterday’s game would have looked SLIGHTLY different if they weren’t spending Nico’s twenty minutes pressing to get him a score in a once in a lifetime game for him.

Only the final game before the regular season.

Mainly, getting a win to have a good vibe going in.
Getting a win would be nice, but the pre-season is all about shaking off rust and evaluating fringe players. Most of these guys were here last year, I expect they all know their bodies better than anyone else does.

I just don't want someone like Hall or Vatanen to get hurt in a meaningless game. If that means they don't try and we get blown out, I'm cool with that. Save it for the games that matter.

Apparently I got shown on the broadcast a few times. I was the guy holding up the Devils flag. Pretty cool!
I noticed the Devils flag in the crowd. Not sure if there were other people who had one also. It appeared to be in the lower bowl on the side opposite the benches.

But you can't shake off Rust without trying hard to win, though.

I get what you're saying but it's pretty difficult to find a balance here.

I'm glad no one got hurt(knock on wood....not miles).

Now the games count.

NOW I FULLY EXPECT the Devils to come out full-bore.

He was alternating shifts with Dea on the Zajac line. I could see both players being cut, but it would be a somewhat odd choice to bring Stafford over to Switzerland just to not play in a game. I could've seen them giving him that game as a finale to his NHL career.

Some journalist mentioned on Twitter that Winnik and Stempniak might sign with the Bruins but are talking to other teams - I could see NJ being interested in either guy.
I just now realized we could also potentially cut nobody, but just not sign Stafford right now, but not cut him either. They might keep him around a week or two before signing him or not signing him.

I cannot imagine that there are actual people with brains who are making rash judgments (either way) on a MEANINGLESS game played on a different continent on larger ice

that isn't happening, right?
I dunno about rash judgements about the game results, but I think judging how our players mesh together is important. Of course, I wouldn't judge the Nico line because they kept feeding him, but I think it's not unreasonable evaluate the performances of other lines and players.

I mean... things like watching Dea to see where he fits in, and the PB&J line to see if any of them will actually shoot. Seeing if Mueller might be able to handle 1st pairing stay-at-home duties next to Vats, seeing if Wood got better over the offseason, watching JQ to see if he'll actually be decent and seeing if the Texans work as well with Boyle as they did with Zajac were all important, and made the game far from meaningless to me.

Or they could just keep him around forever as an invited guest till the need arises like Lou did with Albelin and Gomez.

Yeah, it’s not often that it happens, but there’s no limit to how long we can keep a PTO guy around, but they’re not allowed to travel with the club if they’re not signed after today, if I recall correctly.

I don't think it's that uncommon. We did it with Stralman too.

we barely beat what would amount to an ahl team with basically our full lineup. our offense was unable to finish, and were it not for the offensive outburst from greene and lovejoy, we would’ve lost.

yes the ice was bigger...yes their goalie played well...yes they were feeding nico a lot. i’m not drawing any conclusions from this game, but we’d better hope this team can finish when it means something.

Relax man. It was a meaningless, fun game. Our top line was forcing the puck to Nico the entire game. You could see once it got to overtime, Hall literally was like Ok I wanna find Nico, but I can't so its time to just end this game. Our 2nd line controlled the play every shift they were on the ice. The third line was rotating JQ and Dea every other shift, how are they supposed to find any sort of rythm? The fourth line looked solid as well.

As you said, the ice is bigger, their goalie played well, and that team knows how to protect the house on an international ice surface.

Bern got basically 1 scoring chance in the 3rd and scored on it. The Devils were by far the better team. Playing exhibition games against non-NHL teams is dumb.

I'll give it to Cangi. He's really pouring on the charm. It's hard not to like him anymore

I think the dislike stemmed from the main fact that he was not Doc.

And that was UNFAIR to him 'cause NO ONE is like Doc.

Over time he's grown on everyone to the point where we couldn't imagine anyone else replacing him.

Our competition this preseason was against teams that are supposed to stink aside from Wpg

Outside of that game, which I didn't watch but heard we played well, we did not look like a sharp squad.

No one can be honest and say they are not even a tad concerned.

You know teams have done this and lost before, right? One of them won the cup later that year.

I'm not concerned. The problem with negative fans is that they say stuff like this, and then if the Devils start running off wins in October, it's all forgotten until next year when preseason starts going bad. I would've liked certain fringe players to have better showings, but that isn't going to affect a lot of this season, probably. The goalies who needed to play fine did so. The lines are looking good. It's still pre-season.

We went 2-0-1 in the only games where we dressed a competitive lineup. We dressed weaker lineups than our opponent in the first four games, but especially the first three where we leaned mostly on guys who aren't even on the team anymore. Easy to say our opponents are supposed to suck while ignoring the mostly minor league lineups we tossed out.

i’m plenty relaxed, and i acknowledged almost all the factors you mentioned. i’m not concerned necessarily, i guess i just still don’t know what we have here. there are a lot of question marks, i just thought i’d have a better idea by october 2nd

yes lol. please don’t compare us to the prime blackhawks
