I explained some of it here.

If I was to compare the main reason why McGroarty is 6 slots higher, I see higher upside in his game because I think his scoring potential is extremely high. Outside of my top 3 forwards, he's the player in this draft that I could see hitting 100 points, if he hits his ceiling. I've compared his scoring upside before to Drasaitl, and it seems silly to say he'll be as good as a player that is a lock to be a HOF'er. However, I think his upside is extremely high due to how good I think the different aspects of his scoring potential are (passing, shot, sense, size, stick-stills).

To add on slightly, I know some people say he's a bad skater, but look at Cole Sillinger, who I would say skates worse than McGroarty. Not all guys that aren't better than average skaters are going to struggle. I don't even think McGroarty is a bad skater. Maybe he's not a good skater, but I don't see his skating being more than slightly below average, and I think it could become average. There's no real weakness, aside from that. He has size, hockey sense, pretty good defensive play. Maybe he plays at center, maybe winger, so thats a question that still has to be answered, but I'm not sure that effects whether he has success in the NHL.

And then as I said above, the offensive skills are elite. A lot of this stuff is team dependent, but I think he's the type of player that if he's in the right situation he could put up 35-40 PP points per season, if he hits his ceiling. I think his skills within the offensive zone are that good.

I mean, if there was a guy on the US team I thought had this super high end offensive skill set, it would be Nazar for me.

How would you compare wingers like Yurov, Miroshnichenko, and Kemell to the top wingers in 2021 (Eklund, Guenther, Lysell etc...) and the top wingers in 2020 (Laff, Stutzle, Raymond, Perfetti etc...)

Pretty similar. I don’t think there’s any big discrepancies between the caliber of wingers between those drafts. Just different styles of player that you named.

Perevalov's performance isn't small sample though...

I was talking about how Button reacts to a small sample in the tournament usually altering his rankings quite a bit, not so much about Perevalov.

I think a number of those Swedes are late 2003's, so they wouldn't have been at that tournament. From the Swedes at that tournament, I moved down a few players, and moved up a few players. I wouldn't say I'm overly positive about the Swedes. Seems like an average crop for them without any top talents, but maybe some good depth.

As to the Slovaks, I moved Nemec up I think 16 spots, which is among the most of any players. I'm not sure I'm low on him anymore, maybe a little, but nothing substantial. Mesar moved up 10 spots from the prior list. There's never really a huge difference on these lists between 25-45, so I could certainly see him move up or down as the season goes on, but I have him 1 slot outside of round 1. Thats pretty good. Slafkovsky is the player I'm a little concerned about. His start to the season hasn't been too great. I see the puck skills, size, puck protection, scoring ability, but I think his defensive game needs work, as does his skating. I think he has some of the higher upside among the players outside of the top 15 on my list, but he hasn't really had a great start to the season in Liiga. I'm trying to balance his performance at the Hlinka with his start to the season. I think he's actually in the exact same slot as what I had before the Hlinka.

I'm not sure which other Slovaks are top 64 contenders at this time. I think I was rather generous to Elias to keep him as a third rounder due to his weaker start. I like his game though, so maybe he will improve and move up his list. 2nd round for a goalie is tough, but I guess it's possible if he has a very good season. Kmec moved up from my preseason list. I didn't elevate any players I didn't have on my prior list into the first round, and very few into the second round. If he continues to play as well as he has, second round certainly is possible. Petrovsky also moved into the next group of players I considered for my list, although he didn't make my list. Third round, maybe late 2nd, is a possibility. And then that could be six Slovaks in the first 3 rounds. That might be more than the Czech's, and probably any other country other than the big five nations. When was the last time that happened for Slovakia? I think that'd be a great start to regaining their status in international hockey. 2023 should also be a good draft for Slovakia.
Yeah I see what your saying and agree with you. It seems that the HGC performance set us up for high expectations that were going to be very difficult to fulfill. This 04 group beat usa, Sweden, and Finland and Germany with the last 2 being handily. Yet it looks like there is a good chance only 3, maybe 4 will be chosen. Seems almost guaranteed we will end up with less 2004 borns drafted than Finland, despite beating them 6-2 and likely a third or even less players compared to Sweden 2004 born. This stage seems to be the killer for Slovak player development. Draft year production and development disappoints. Ruzicka, Cajkovic, Roman, Chromiak, Hlavaj -> now Elias, Zlnka, Repcik, Sotek, Natny. Looks like it could be a disappointing draft for us, when looking back.

Slovakia has to start their improvement somewhere. While I’m sure you’d like to beat the numbers of Finland or Sweden right away, that should be more of a long-term plan. Being better than Czech Republic at producing drafted players is a good short term plan. Make 2023 better than 2022 and then 2024 better than 2023. It won’t all come together right away. It’s likely to be a slow process for Slovakia to improve.

Good list. A lot of Swedish players from the HGC in top 64, and only 3 slovaks. Sweden must have easily won that game against Slovakia in dominating fashion than!

Yes, sure, just like Finland with Lankinen and Jokiharju winning 2019 IIHF WHC over Canada and Russia with star-packed rosters with Dubois, Nurse, Stone, Kucherov, Malkin, Vasilevskyi, Kuznetsov, Kaprizov etc would mean that Finland has to had at least as much NHL talent on the ice.

That is the worst comparison I’ve ever heard, you can’t compare a junior tournament with a senior one

You surely can. But, I mean, you can find such comparsions in juniors aswell. Slovakia 2015 for example. How many future NHLers did they have? Cernak? I don't remember if he was there, but Sweden who lost to them had at least W.Nylander, Kempe, Forsling, Lindblom and Olofsson

Look, Slovakia had 3 best players on the ice vs Sweden in Slafkovsky, Nemec and Dvorsky(who is 2023). Doesn't mean that the rest of this group is better than the swedish one. You can say the same about Russia, they have an good 2004 group, but if you put Michkov and Miroshnichenko aside, swedish 2004 is probably better, but with Michkov and Miroshnichenko, Russia is the favorite.

Nemec is better than any swedish defenseman from 2004. Slafkovsky is better than any swedish forward from 2004. And Dvorsky is even better than Slafkovsky.
But if you merge Sweden and Slovakia in one team, it will be mostly speaking swedish.

PS Out of 11 swedish players on that list only 7 were at Hlinka, Jansson, Persson and Forsmark are 2003 and Suzdalev was ill.

Looks like it could be a disappointing draft for us, when looking back.

Nemec, Slafkovsky - 1st round
Mesar - 1st/2nd round
Petrovsky - top 100
Kmec - 4th round

And I'm convinced that at least 2-3 other players will be selected as well (bet: Elias and Sykora). And someone can rise up like Demek this year. In all aspects, one of the best drafts in 20 years.

Czechia will stay ahead. For 2022 and for the years to come. If Slovakia reaches 8 players it will be a great performance. When the Czech Republic gets 8 players like the last 3 years, it's a bad performance. The Slovaks are progressing, but so are the Czechs, and the Czech population is twice as numerous.

The order will not change in Europe in the next few years. It will always be 1 Sweden 2 Finland 3 Czechia 4 Slovakia.

2022 Draft Rankings
Just a few words before I post my Nov-21 draft rankings.

1. Size – Size matters one again. Who knew?
It has been significantly under-reported but there has been a seismic shift in drafting related to under-sized players (Under 5’11). By my calculations the drafted under-sized players in the 2021 draft fell 54% from 2020 and 46% from 2019. Even more significantly, the under-sized taken in the 7th round fell by more than 80% from both 2020 and 2019. I currently have 5 under-sized players in the 1st round – Cooley (6), Savoie (9), Nazar (10), Howard (11) and Mesar (22).

2. OHL – It matters when you lose a season.
The hardest group to evaluate this season has been the OHLers. On one night they look like superstars in the making and the next night they would be lucky to qualify for decent pond hockey. It looks like it will be a while before many of them find their groove. I currently have 4 OHLers in the 1st round – Wright (1), Poitras (23), Ludwinski (24) and Mintyakov (31) plus 8 in the 2nd – Gazizov (35), McConnell-Barker (37), Zhilkin (39), Goyette (44), Nelson (46), Robertson (48), Haight (54) and Sapovaliv (61).

3. Goalies – Where have all the goalies gone?
There is some justification for me having 2 goalies in the 2nd round – Brennan (47, .919) and Leinonen (51, .921). However, after that it is mostly retros (previous draft-eligibles) who stand out. Here are some retro names for you – Holt (101. .930), Whitehead (121, .944), Blomquist (136, .934), Malik (146, .924) and Brochu (158, .913).

4. Modest-sized right wingers – There is a sale on.
If you are looking for a modestly-sized, skilled right winger, this is your year. Those available include Kemell (3), Savoie (9), Nazar (10), Lekkerimaki (13), Perevalov (20) and Mesar (22). You could also add the slightly more average-sized Miroshnichenko (4) who is current a left winger but he shoots right and Lambert (14) who is currently at centre but may end up on right wing.

5. Europe and NTDP – It’s a good year.
It is banner year for Europe and the USA U18 NTDP. There are currently 15 players playing in Europe in my 1st round.
4 – Finland – Kemell (3), Lambert (14), Nyman (16) and Matikka (27)
3 – Russia – Yurov (2), Miroshnichenko (4) and Perevalov (20)
3 – Slovakia – Slavkovsky (7) who is playing in Finland, Nemec (12) and Mesar (22)
3 – Sweden – Lekkerimaki (13), Ohgren (19) and Salomonsson (28).
1 – Czech Republic – Jiricek (8)
1 – Switzerland – Bichsel (32) who is playing in Sweden

The USA U18 NTDP is also enjoying a renaissance. I have 6 players in the 1st round and the potential for more before the season ends – Cooley (6), Nazar (10), Howard (11), McGroarty (17), Chesley (21) and Snuggerud (29.

The slovaks have more good players than Slaf, Nemec and Dvorsky.

Knazko, Mesar, Ciernek, Demek, Chromiak, Kmec for exemple.

Did not Slovakia miss some players in Hlinka too? They won over us, it was not luck. Will be intresting to see what you say when Slovakia win over us in December again.

I just dont see it with Sweden. Eklund, Lysell, Holtz, Raymond, Wallinder and Edvinsson are only blue chip prospects from Sweden. The 2004,2005,2006 born group does not look good for Sweden.

1: Russia
2: Finland
3: Slovakia
4: Czech
5: Germany
6: Belarus
7: Sweden

Thats how i see it, in Europe.

Yeah, the Belarusian versions of Eklund, Holtz, Raymond, Lysell and Edvinsson are so much better!
