Wondering if Tampa would take a shot at him for a rental for the play offs? I'm not too sure on Tampas prospects or what contract they would get rid of to get him or what it would cost?
Please be gentle

I've been a fan of Jack Johnson ever since he embraced his trade from LA to Columbus. Unfortunately for Jack, Father Time is catching up with him and the NHL is getting faster at the same time. His advanced stats are terrible this year, so combined with the other stuff, I can't see a team like Tampa picking him up for a Cup run.

Seen this coming from a kilometer away.

How??

What's the deal? What I know of Johnston is that he was drafted, his Dad was a major pain in the a$$ prompting his trade from the Hurricanes. Then in LA, Dean Lombardi once again, hated his Dad (and maybe Jack too) He was once again dealt, but this time it clicked,

Johnston was the first guy to say "I'm a Blue Jacket and I love it" and he kind of brought the team together, and the Jackets were no longer a Jail sentence, he did a lot to change their image.

Personally, however, his play, when seen from afar, is odd.

In LA he seemed to be a top pairing 40pt. physical defenseman, after becoming a Jacket, three things stood out:

1. TONS of ice time, he played ALOT
2. The offense dried up, especially with the amount of time he was on the ice, inexplicably his scoring numbers shrank to the 20-30 pt level
3. HORRIBLE plus-minus, the more he was on the ice the more the other team scored

Along the way, of course, he discovered his parents had bankrupted him, and I believe cut ties

So, how is it you saw this coming? Is he even a desirable trade target? Is he a GOOD defenseman?

What is this guys deal?

OK, I guess. Players requesting a trade are prepared to go to any team other than the team they are on. I mean, he could end up in Arizona or Buffalo. What is he cashing in on? He is a UFA in 4 months.

edit: I'm not arguing just trying to understand.

Is this a case of the Blue Jackets knowing he's a declining asset, and either planning on letting him go or lowballing him this summer?

And Jack hoping that going to a team that doesn't know him as well, will obscure his faults, perhaps put him in a better position to succeed?

Remember, his Dad blew all his money, Jack needs another contract

It must be so depressing to make 5 million a year and still have to worry about finances after your current contract ends. :(

It might be if he actually got to keep that 5m. The reality is he only gets to keep about 5% of that.

From the article (summary, no quotes).

Has asked for a trade - apparently a few weeks ago. Reasoning? Due to a diminishing role with the team and a need/want to better position himself for FA. Hard to blame him when he's only getting 13:30 a game (like vs BUF the other day).

Shouldn't really be a surprise. Due to his financial issues, he's basically starting from scratch as a 30 yr old, and whatever contract he gets this summer will likely A) be his last big one and B) one where he will be forced to go to the highest bidder.

Yes, this was a VERY bad year for him to be pushed to the sidelines, he needs to make himself look good this year

I say Detroit takes him

Why would we want a pending UFA that's a 4/5 these days?

I guess because he's, in theory, a high minute, stabilizing defenseman that has the physical tools to play it anyway the coach wants

In reality, his stats say........well, that he isn't very good! So, I don't know why EDM would want him

Remember, he and Sid are old Buddies.......Penguins? For Ian Cole?

I feel sorry for him and wish him the best of luck. Hopefully he gets to a place where he can show that he is still 2nd pairing D and gets a nice contract next summer. I totally understand why he wants out. It's a shame that it had to go this way and he feels that he has to leave a team as good as CBJ is.

Problem for him is, what decent team will give him the top 4 minutes, and the PP minutes that he wants? No contender can put him in their top 4 and expect to play good enough defense. Hes a third pairing PP specialist and the only shot he has at cashing in is with a bubble team looking to make the playoffs. The Leafs are average defensively and he wouldn't crack our top 4 even with an injured Zaitsev out of the lineup.

This is way bigger than hockey for Johnson. He has made tens of millions and has nothing to show for it. If I was him I would also be doing whatever I thought was best to secure a living/retirement at this point. The guy should be a millionaire and never have to worry about working after his hockey career. Not many people reach that point and it would be unacceptable to lose all that. Winning a Stanley cup or whatever else is not nearly as important as securing your future considering time is running out.

Nobody should judge this guys decision. Columbus should send him wherever he feels his best opportunity is and accept whatever they can salvage. It is not a back breaking move for the Blue Jackets anyway.

As my username states... I’ve been a CBJ STH for years and years.. I try to watch atleast 80 of the 82 regular season games every year. You could say I’m a CBJ diehard but.. even this has me baffled. This literally came out of nowhere and has me by surprise. As I posted on the CBJ thread.. me and my friend (who has cerebral palsy and loves JJ) got to meet him at a local baseball game here in town. He was so friendly and down to earth. I won’t miss his on ice performance so much but I’ll definitely miss him being a part of this orginzation. The way he handles himself on the ice and off is nothing but pure class.

All the best, JJ.

Connor Carrick + Jeremy Bracco

Nope, while Carrick is expendable as I don’t see him as a long term solution I am not trading Bracco because of his potential and the fact the JJ is a LHD and not what we need.

We need a big, RHD that can skate and has a focus on D.

Interesting remarks by Torts after the game tonight about Jack Johnson... sure sounds like he had no idea JJ requested a trade. “If we’re gonna have any chance at all when it comes to playing in the playoffs, he has to be apart of it.”

Johnson needs to go to a team that has cap space and needs defensemen. That is nothing short of a fact; the way his financial situation has deteriorated (apparently not due to his own actions, either) forces him to go for the money instead of success. For him, playing behind Werenski and Murray/Nutivaara is a seriously harmful position, even if Columbus is a very good team.

We'll know Johnson's true destination by July 1st, but if he moved teams prior to that, it would not surprise me either.

Columbus doesn’t to have to do anything for him accept give him a paycheque. Just like he owes them nothing but his service. He’s looking out for himself and wants to be traded. Columbus should trade him to wherever they get the best value for him.

If Portzline is right, looks like the Avs dodged a bullet there. Glad it fell apart.

Sucks that it had such an impact on Johnson who is probably the one guy in the league that really needs to get paid given his recent troubles.

And now that he has had a rather crappy season (atleast in comparison to last year), it won't exactly be easy to make that happen for him,

I don't want him on the Avs but hopefully he can get a nice paycheck elsewhere in the offseason. Don't think anyone will give up much (or enough for CBJ to pull the trigger pre-deadline) but given the cap increase, someone will probably throw a decent offer his way...
