His ES scoring was way down. He largely (but not quite) made up the difference with PP scoring. If you think he was the same player, fine. I don't. Not even close.
Funny how the ones who put up tons of points are constantly open to criticism while plugs who almost never score are praised,

Put two good forwards with Panarin and he's a top 5 scorer in the league. Even without that he's about a top 10 scorer. He's also easily the best passing forward on the team.

He put up 15 points more than the 2nd highest scorer on the team.

He led the team in even-strength points.

Despite his clearly being hurt in the playoffs, he put up 16 in 20.

Is he perfect? No. Is any player? No.

And some people fawn all over players like Kakko and Reaves.

Kakko may become great, but so far, even when his linemates get points, he can't. Playing Hunt over him made little sense, but there's probably a story behind that. Some here acted like McDavid had been scratched despite Kakko doing next to nothing in the playoffs.

Reaves was one of the absolute worst Rangers this season, yet some still believe he serves a function because he smiles menacingly at opponents.

Thanks to the cap, each roster necessarily has plugs that don’t score. Team success is about everyone doing their job. The expensive top six guys don’t get a pass for simply outscoring the cheap bottom six guys.

Also, this board was foaming at the mouth about Reaves, Rooney and McKegg, because they don’t even serve their basic fourth line function of shutdown defense. Goodrow and Motte did, which is why they are praised.

I’m not the slightest worried about Panarin moving forward. He is the type of player who plays with a chip on his shoulder and has something to prove. I expect that he feels his play was inadequate, judging from his comments. In between all the joking, he said he is grateful for the opportunity to play in the playoffs but he wasn’t good enough and will be better. I believe him.

But it’s not enough to just look at his points and give him the 3rd star of the game. He had over 40 giveaways these playoffs. He wasn’t very good. Panarin is so talented that he can contribute points even when his game off but once Cirelli shut down Zibanejad’s line, we needed Panarin to take his game to another level and he failed to do it. I think he’ll be better next playoffs.

I love Art, but I've been praying to see a report that he was banged up since end of regular season. Honestly, the guy was horse shit every single playoff games. He had glimpses of his elite skill, but what was concerning is he worked his balls off, and was still completely in effective playing Spring puck. That or maybe there is a steep decline coming out of nowhere?

It's really hard to pin down but it's beyond concerning for me. If he becomes even a 80 point PP specialist on the 2nd line, not driving that line, that is a concern.

He was an 80 point player when we signed him... The 90-100 point seasons we were getting from him were actually above expectations. With that being said, he does need to be better in the playoffs than he was. I truly think he was nursing something, or if he wasn't, that he knows he wasn't good and needs to be better. I think he didn't have a good off-season last year and came to camp not in the top shape. I expect him to come back next season showing that he is better than what we saw.

Eh, when we signed him he was coming off of 87 in 79, so around a 90 point player already. The difference is he was 5th in the NHL in even strength production, and had been top 7 for the last 3 years. His first year here he was 1st in the NHL in even strength production. This year he was 18th. That’s significant. Even last year he was 10th. These past two seasons were the first time since his rookie year that he wasn’t top 7 in the league in even strength production, and even as a rookie he was 9th. The last two years have been his lowest finishes in 5v5 production in his career. There has been a strong shift towards PP production.

Thank you. The plugs have a job to do. If they do their job, that’s good enough, if they produce above the average for their role, even better. The guys who make 10M+ are relied upon not just to compile points but be difference makers and take over or break open games. Artemi has stopped doing that over the past year plus. He’s being criticized relative to the role he’s paid to play. Everyone knows how good Panarin is. The trouble is he hasn’t been playing the same hockey that he played in his first season in NY - he was a puck hound year one, he attacked the net, he ripped one timers, he was an all around threat. He is becoming a much less impactful player, despite good totals.

His first year here he had 95 in 70 and was 1st in the NHL in 5v5 production. This year he put up 96 in 75, but was 18th in 5v5 production. Prior to this year, he has never been outside of the top 10 in 5v5 scoring. His career has been:

9th CHI
5th CHI
7th CBJ
5th CBJ
1st NYR
10th NYR
18th NYR

He can bounce back but his trajectory is leaning more and more on the PP to produce and less on being the game breaker we saw in year 1.

Here’s another way of looking at it.

Panarin was 56th in the NHL in 5v5 goal differential this year. He was 53rd last year. His first year here he was 1st in the NHL.

His first year here, no one on the ice was a bigger positive impact in the entire league, at 5v5. The past two years he isn’t even top 50. The years prior he was 10th and 15th.

He had 95 points his first year here and the best 5v5 goal differential in the league. He had 96 points this year and had the 56th best 5v5 goal differential. That means those same 95 points were far less impactful.

He’s being paid to be that top 10-20 impact player. Being in the 50s is not okay. He had

I agree with everything you are seeing. I'm sure injuries had a factor in our our top players inability to perform.

I'm no fan of Strome, but he does have a degree of talent and it couldn't be utilized.

The youth HAS to continue to develop at all costs., but Let's face it... If the vets/stars on this current version of the Rangers don't deliver in the post season, they will not advance. The youth HAS to continue to develop at all costs.

Panarin is just too good to play so stupidly in the post season like he just did.

I just have to complain about CK. He had an incredible season, and was very good in the playoffs.

I just cannot fathom how he manages to do just totally disappear in some games... he doesn't hit, he doesn't fight, he doesn't yell, he doesn't t skate... he just simply does NOTHING for a full 60 minutes... how is that even possible???

The Rangers need someone who can stir that locker room up... and can actually skate.... Not Reeves

Hard to follow up on LD's response as it's spot on. It's a weird year for Art and I'm hoping it's fools gold. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I was at 4 games this post season. He looked very bad in all of them. And he scored the Game 7 winner right in front of me. I don't think analytics are be-all-end-all although they help tell a story. And I do believe in the eye test a bit. Both have their merits. But I will tell you this, the one thing I know about any chart that rates Art as one of our best playoff players? It's bad data.

Hoping for a return to his usual form, but him being 30 years old while this is happening... yikes.

And if you think about it, he could get by on a loaded team being a 80 point PP specialist, and you can relieve some of that with cheap players playing over their head (Laf, Key, etc) but then you lose the whole competitive advantage of the rest of your cap in your prime years.

Panarin will also be 31 next season. His best may very well be behind him and this is the way it will continue to go.

And if it does, so be it, I’m not saying he’s awful or not still an elite talent but 90-100 points with 40% coming on the PP (38% this year) isn’t nearly as good a use of 12M against the cap as the return we were getting on 1st year Panarin, and so we will feel it, unfortunately. In his first season when 90-100 points came and only 24% were on the PP and he had the best 5v5 goal differential in the world? That’s a player you can afford to give 12M. Having 40% of your production coming on the PP and being 56th in 5v5 goal differential would make carrying that contract for 4 more years more of a burden.

I think it's fair to say, he did all that in a bad season by his standards. Just based on the eye test, he wasn't the same player as previous years. Was he still able to make the most of a subpar season by his standards? Yes.

Does he deserve to be making Connor McDavid money on this team if this is how he's going to continue playing? No way in hell.

Again, I give him a pass - the entire team struggled 5v5, and he's allowed a bad year.

Not for 12m he isn't. I mean it happened and there's nothing to do about it but the team needed him for the cup push and he wasn't there. Since he is without a doubt THE offensive core player it's a huge opportunity missed for the team and entire organization. Meanwhile Kakko, an easy target, gets shit yet him and Chytil were the team's most creative duo 5v5.

He was such a wizard that year. Just mindbogglingly good. It seemed like every time he was on the ice he did something special.

I never got to watch a player with such a complete NHL-caliber game over 70-ish games like that before. It was awesome.

I doubt he ever gets to those same heights, but I do hope he will improve next year.

Salaries are determined by supply and demand, just like in every other profession.

Comparing him to a true generational talent is kinda odd. Is Kreider worth his salary? Trouba? Reaves?

If that's a bad year, no forward on the roster had a good year, yet they made it to the Semis.

Vince said Strome has been battling that injury since a March game vs. the Sabres, says Goodrow took another shot to the same ankle on the same spot early in the TB series and that Motte wasn’t near 100%.

This all sounds right. Disappointed that Panarin and Copp are apparently fine health wise—I would have expected more from them in the playoffs.

Kakko might become good, but if your 5v5 is great and you are a 25 point player, that counts as good? If your 5v5 is slightly worse and you pot 90 points, you're a slug?

Motte might be 100% when he starts any season. Might.

After that, nope.
