To me with Panarin - yeah he may have been limited in some way physically, be it hands or wrist or core or something - but whatever it was - it didn't affect his decision making which was dreadful at times 5 on 5.
He would make backhand outlet passes into the middle ice or throw passes at the opposition blueline through seams that weren't there, cross ice passes in zone through 4 guys - high danger, low success plays that you just cant do in the playoffs. That has nothing to do with physical injuries, thats all decision making. Especially all of the backhand giveaways. Waaaaay too many.
Its even more inexcuseable if he had an injury that affected his stickhandling because if he knew going in he wasnt 100%, he should make the safe play instead.
He got better at supporting his teammates in his own zone as the playoffs went on, but even that was difficult for him as he loves to float up top to spring the break outs. He was on an island in a lot of the games they lost and it resulted in a lot of high danger chances against his line.
I get it - you dont want to neuter your top players and take away their skill - but theres a time and place. Kucherov is a very skilled player and an elite passer, but he knows when and when not to force plays. That is something I hope Panarin noticed in his own game and is more prepared next playoffs, because this team will not win a Cup without him being a difference maker and making smart plays in all zones.
