Awesome video - that plan looks fantastic.

Not that I'm an expert on the issue but I don't see how any of the other proposals can compete with that unless they are willing to build an arena.

I agree, it looks like they have some big plans for that part of the city. I think that is a very good proposal, but what is the capacity of the arena, it looks rather small.

nice vid, great use of computer animation as well.

I like the plan, give some more space to downtown as well, due to the area of the old Mellon arena being filled up by buildings and reconnected space.

Arena looks nice, and I would assume it would be around 17,000-18,000 range in capacity, so a bit on the small size, but I don't think Pittsburgh needs a 20,000 seat arena either.

Yeah, I believe around 18,000 is the number that has been the most speculated upon (source here). The actual capacity of the arena was never as much of an issue so much as the lack of luxury boxes and the fact that it's a complete dump.

The Pittsburgh First website is a nice hub of information on the arena and development plans. It briefly encapsulates the IOC plans, their partnerships and pertinent stories related to the ever-unfolding issue.

Like the previous post, no hanging scoreboard seems to be a bit of a problem.

Also, why would they put a park over a road? You know that car fumes, edges, fast moving traffic and little kids go right together.

Good thing the area surrounding a casino never goes to hell because of the need for a nearby base of low-income workers.

Here's a better plan a bit to the Northeast:
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/l...eum,0,3196804.realvideo?coll=ny-top-headlines

The casino is coming that horse long ago left the stable. The only question is who gets the license, where the casino goes, and what the give back to the community is. In this case, the area in question was destroyed long ago, ironically by the building of the first arena. It's primary business is crack whores and closed depressed slum housing. The alternate area, forest city? An area almost impossible to get into now, station square, that is already developed. Their give back to the city? While IOC is giving a billion dollars in redevelopment to that area as well as a fund established for community outreach, the plan for Station square only includes $1 m. a year to 'minorities' run by Franco Harris, who is playing Step and Fetch it to their plan. That's it. If it were not such a joke you would think that I made that up.

The area surrounding the arena already is hell, for the most part. I doubt it could get any worse. In fact, with a neighborhood development program, it will get much, much better. Will it work it's way down from there? I guess we'll see. Hopefully.

Anyway... that athletic facility looks amazing. I've never been to the Island. Is the area surrounding the arena really that barren? It looks like some sort of post-apocalyptic landscape.

They just eliminated everything else to make the plan stand out. Amazingly though, it's almost as flat. People here freak out when you build anything over a few stories tall.

Heh... alright, that's what I figured. It just looked too bleak to be real.

I'm beginning to see why that big spire is central to the plan, then. It will really make the entire developmet stand out if the rest of the buildings in the surrounding area are low-level. I must have missed it on the video, but what exactly is that building? Offices?

Besides no hanging jumbotron, the only thing that I thought was really Pejorative Slured were those gridded sections at EVERY intersection.

If they got rid of them and this plan is as nice as it seemed, I'd definately have a different tune on Pittsburgh (which, IMO, is just a very plain and ugly city as of now). Good luck on getting it done.

AND GET RID OF THOSE UGLY GRIDDED THINGS.

The area already went to hell. It's nothing but abandoned hospitals, ****** arenas, parking spots, roads to nowhere, and worthless land.

Mellon Arena cut that part of the city off from the rest of it.

I'm going to have that music in my head for the rest of the day now.

da da....da da da da-da da da....

It'd be even cooler if a full-blown casino were allowed and not just a slots parlor. I understand its also going to have bistros and shows and things like that, but if there tables and the like, the revenue would be huge.

The only thing I don't like is there's no hanging scoreboard. Other than that, it's okay.

From watching that video, the arena seems very undercooked and uninspiring, but thats OK, as the arena is not the point of that video. The purpose of that video is to sell the idea of the develompent package, and not to show off the arena.

My guess is the arena will look nothing like it does in this clip. Trust me, i know how these things work.

Mark Madden today said that Bettman said that the tide had turned and that because of the pressure being felt by the politicians that the Pens now seem unlikely to move. I found this that supported that claim by the big guy:

With Pittsburgh's new arena deal still in jeopardy, Bettman said it was unlikely the Penguins would relocate to "viable" markets such as Quebec City or Winnipeg.

Way to go, your quote of "still in jeopardy" and "viable markets such as Quebec City or Winnipeg" will now spawn numerous threads titled something around, "WHERE WOULD YOU MOVE THE PENS??" or "MY NHL WITH NEW DIVISIONS!!!" or "WE NEED EXPANSION TEAMS!!!".

Forget the fact Bettman said it won't happen of course.

The video was alright but I never realized how ugly a city Pittsburgh was. It's like Hamilton's big brother with less trees.
