I did not read correctly, but my point stands. Philly and Columbus are far enough away (and I do off the top of my head believe that Philly is only 4.5 or so hours away as another poster said, it is almost to NYC) that you can not tell me that it has any but a marginal effect on the SW PA market.

from the igloo to the wachovia center 4h 57 m as per msn so by going 70 instead of 65 mph on the turnpike 4.5 hours is very doable

In the middle of the night maybe. Too much traffic to do it during the day. I had plans to go out to Pittsburgh that fell through, and we thought we were better off leaving at 3am

The question is...is there enough to do that. Maybe if you have U of Pitt play basketball there and that would probably bring in some NCAA tournament games, not much else though.

If you are talking just about sports, I apologize, but this needs to be said either way.

Do you know how many acts don't come to the Mellon Arena because it is so outdated? Heck, they had to bring a crane in just to put in the overhead goal cams. Imagine what it would be like for a band to set up in there.

If the SS group wins, they are tearing down the Chevy Amp Theatre...uhm, okay, what place in Pittsburgh is going to hold concerts then? The revenue from the PPG Pavilion doesn't go to Pittsburgh. It doesn't make sense.

the only person that you are kidding there is yourself, Rendell will still get the majority of the democrat vote, it dosent matter who runs on the ticket, people vote the party line and that is it, Swann will get some votes since he is an ex steeler but he is still a republican and the only thing he has going for him is his name

the penguins getting a new arena might be the biggest thing to us pens fans but most other people dont give a rats ***

It's like we can all see the future. We can see the Penguins gone, and a few years after that the silly yinzers will be whining about how the city needs a new arena.

But would they go to Pittsburgh when Columbus and Philadelphia are that close and with shiny new arenas to boot? I know the Camden arena was shot down because of it’s proximity to Philadelphia.
Camden is like 2 miles from Philly.

No, it is more like 100 yards from Philly. Merely separated by the Delaware River, or the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Large scale concerts will avoid outdated arenas for logisical reasons. I have worked in concert production for a number of years and let me tell you trying to make a show work in an old unforgiving building is hard work.

Yup. It makes Newark seem like heaven.

If Pittsburgh keeps deteriorating, it ain't gonna be much different than Newark or Camden.

The politicians in the area seem to be feeling the pressure and changing their tune. This is almost a 100% about face for our county exec since last month. And about damn time:

"Isle of Capri has set the bar," Onorato said during an appearance on WDVE-FM's Morning Show. "They've made it very clear what they believe is going to be generated from gaming and what they're willing to put back into the community.

"The best strategy for me, as chief executive, is to continue to put the pressure on all three (slots license) applicants. It's not a matter of not endorsing Isle of Capri; I'm endorsing the concept -- whoever gets this, should help build this."

By "help," Onorato means fully fund the project, short of infrastructure and overruns.

"That's correct," Onorato said.

From Onorato's perspective, the need for the facility and the benefits of the Penguins playing in it are beyond questioning.

The dilemma is making it happen financially.

"We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build this thing without tax dollars," Onorato said. "And, if we miss this opportunity, we're not going to see it again, because if that team leaves, it's not coming back.

Originally posted on the Pens' board. If you want to see the kind of pressure the media is putting on station square, the only real competition to the Pens' slots plan, click here. Even some on the other side of the state, judging by posts on our board by some from Philly, apparently do not get how big an issue this is in Pittsburgh and why the Politicians are scrambling. I do not want to get hopes up too much, but the tide definately seems to have shifted. An example of what is going on in Pittsburgh:

I can't believe these threads were merged on Pens arena talk.

If anything, should have been merged with the only one in the business forum that had substance...

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=199824

If you want the complete scoop on the arena situation, need to read the 20 page sticky thread on the Pens board...

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=201124

That is a very valueable source of information that will continue to grow as this situation develops over the next YEAR.

This issue seems to be blowing up in Rendell's face far more than he likely thought it would. From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

A city that takes sports seriously presses Rendell for a new arena
By Angela Couloumbis
Inquirer Harrisburg Bureau

PITTSBURGH - It's game day at the Cafe Fifth Avenue. Every stool at the bar is taken, Iron City beer is flowing from the tap, and the lights are dimmed to low glow.

Few things can disturb the vibe. Few things, that is, except the mention of Gov. Rendell and his stance on a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the city's pro-hockey team. Mention his name in this crowd, and you hear outrage. In some cases, just rage.

Thanks.

When is the world going to learn that .avi and .mpg are superior to .wmv and .asx?

I've never been to Pittsburgh and don't even know what the area is like but just from looking at that video I like the layout change of that part of the city, makes a lot more sense and to reconnect some of those streets and such, looks pretty nice!

Awesome video - that plan looks fantastic.

Not that I'm an expert on the issue but I don't see how any of the other proposals can compete with that unless they are willing to build an arena.

The only bad thing about the video is the music . . . sounds like the background to really shoddy porn.
You're right, I dunno what they were thinking with that lol.

Very cool otherwise, they did a great job with it. They've got some big plans.
