and Swann's status of Super Jesus of Pittsburgh is secure.

Swann is just blowing where the political winds are blowing. I heard his interview not that long ago, just before the Super Bowl, and he was very non-committal and barely knew a thing about the arena issue, or even that it was a big deal. 'I have to study that' I think was his response or something like that. Now he joins almost every state wide official other than the Governor in endorsing at least the use of slots money for an arena, if not outright endorsing the IOC plan.

A question. Can you name one politician, just one, who has endorsed the Forest City/Station Square plan? That tells you far more than Swann's endorsement.

The one good thing though, it almost forces Rendell's hand. He almost has to endorse slots money for an arena to be in the same ball park as Swann. Just a guess that he does so.

Swann throws support behind casino company's arena plan
By Bob Lentz, The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH — Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann on Wednesday threw his support behind a gambling company's plan to build a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins if the company wins a state gambling license.

Swann called Isle of Capri's offer to build a $290 million arena a "win, win, win situation."

"It's a win for the Penguins because they get a first rate facility. It's a win for the Hill District, where we're talking about redevelopment, and it's a win for the taxpayers because it doesn't cost the taxpayers a cent," Swann said.

Swann stopped short of endorsing gambling, saying if he is elected governor, he will inherit many things he is not in favor of.

"I'm not a fan of gambling, but I didn't bring gambling to Pittsburgh. This is the only plan that makes sense for Pittsburgh," he said.

With the aging Mellon Arena in the background, Swann emphasized the importance of keeping the Penguins in Pittsburgh and redeveloping the area around the arena.

Sim City reference :)

First step in getting a new arena

Mapping out the area

A growing village

1 nuclear power plant, 2 residential zones, 1 industrial zone, 1 commercial zone, roads and powerlines and 12 cars.

Hey, he said my city is good!

For the squeamish you might not want to look at screencap5

It starts

It is almost like Sim City was based on Pittsburgh.

Bowser = the Rust Belt and special interests.

A stadium in Sim City costs $3,000 X 100,000 and we get $300,000,000 for the project, what is the estimated cost for the casino/stadium proposal?

I am in agreement that there is no need for a 20,000 stadium for the Pens. 17-18K + luxury boxes should be enough to sustain a team.

No QC or Winnipeg :(

Personally I do not like the idea of latching onto gambling to get a new stadium, whatever the proposal brings for the Pens does not counter the far reaching effects of addiction and gambling have on people.
Precious memories!

I feel that the Penguins will stay in Pittsburgh and a new arena will be built. There is no way the city will let the team go. The Pens stay in Pittsburgh and get that new amazing looking arena and the team does not move anywhere.

I just wanted to say that CT and Hartford is behind you all the way. We hope you keep your team. Ignore all the talk by the idiot called Larry G that wants to buy the team. It is all smoke being blown up our asses in Hartford. We will do anything to help you keep your team in Pittsburgh. The Pens would not be the same in another city and Pittsburgh deserves to keep its team.

Go Pens Go!! Ct and Hartford is behind you. Keep the Pens!

Huge news. Huge. I just posted this on the Pens board as well. No clue why this is not getting bigger coverage. Our nightmare appears to be over.

well there are still a lot of hurdles, but I am far more confident now in the Pens staying then I was a few months ago. I'd say it's about a 70/30 chance that they stay now.

Hopefully this happens quickly and painless and we have a new arena and possibly a new owner who isn't wishywashy about keeping the Pens in Pittsburgh.

I would say 99/100. Primary reason being that the Pens for several reasons really do not want to leave.

1) Mario lives here and wants to stay here. I hardly think his legacy, selling the team and having it move after there was commitment one way or another to build an arena is one that he wants.

2) Pittsburgh is a rabid hockey market. It would take decades, if ever, to achieve the same in a KC or similar. Face it, from a purely $$$ standpoint the Pens are worth more here in Pittsburgh, if there is a new arena, than they would be anywhere else. Far more at least for decades to come.

Still, the team has not committed to staying in Pittsburgh under the backup plan. It does not know enough about the proposal, said President Ken Sawyer.

“We have to find out what the deal is,†said Sawyer, who is scheduled to speak this afternoon. “We’ve only had a glimpse of it.â€

I hope it goes through, but I'm still not uncrossing the fingers. :D

Great for pittsburgh, congrats, it looks like you'll be getting arena. However, it does seem you'll have to go through a little bit more of the politcal BS. Hey, atleast the pens organization has a legitimate reason for relocation in the first place, unlike the friggen Portland Trailblazers owners who signed a lease agreement and now want to leave because it is hindering them from making even more money. :madfire:

That is great news I would hate to see the Pens move. Glad to hear it for their fans and I hope the arena is amazing and the Pens do much better next season. Hartford and CT is behind you and very excited the Pens will not be moving to KC or Hartford.

The truth is the Pirates should move the Penguins should stay. That market can support a NHL team but not a MLB franchise.

That could be said about buffalo and the bills or sabres. However, judging from recent news I think the NFL wants to relocate the Bills to LA.

Speak for yourself, man.
As much as it would suck for Pittsburgh, I would love an NHL team back here in CT.
Call me whatever you want, but I'm being honest.

This years attendance was a prime example that Pittsburgh is a hockey town. Selling tickets like they were and still being out of it pretty much since day 1 is impressive.

Shows how far 1 player can go. Like its been said before, not only did pittsburgh deserve Sidney Crosby because of their last season record, but because they needed him so they could stay in town.

I can't wait until all this is set in stone, its going to be damn nice to be able to be 100% that hockey will be in pittsburgh for years to come.

How many people actually think Pittsburgh isn't a hockey market? I don't believe I've ever heard that, yet many people on this message board keep bringing it up to rebuttle something.

Am I missing something?

The IOC plan is the only one that would guarantee a new area in Pittsburgh. Any other plan would have to compete with all the other cities vying for the franchise.
