Oh there is shoddy porn.

Can't believe that two people also felt, as i did, that they were playing Sim City.

Great vid, the lower hill could really use this i think.

Jaded that link doesn't work.

I fixed the link.

And I still say shoddy porn . . . just close your eyes and imagine some tacky grainy early 70's film of some girl stripping, big hair sprayed stiff hair and all.

The video was alright but I never realized how ugly a city Pittsburgh was. It's like Hamilton's big brother with less trees.

Spoken like a man who's never been there before. Pittsburgh is actually quite a nice city. It didn't use to be the case, but it's quite difficult to drive through the Fort Pitt tunnels and into downtown and not be thoroughly impressed by the cityscape. I have no particular affinity for the city outside of Primanti Bro's, but you cannot view their riverfront from the Gateway Clipper and tell me it's an ugly city. From the Convention Center to PNC Park to Heinz Field, they have first rate facilities for locals and travellers alike. When you consider the steep hillsides that surround the city and provide wonderful vantage points as well as the ample water flowing through the city, it's hard not to be impressed. They have gone out of their way to make the city more beautiful. Living in Nashville, a city of similar size, resources, and layout, I'd love for us to mimic Pittsburgh as we begin to thoroughly renovate the riverfront as well as several downtown areas.

It's no Sydney, Australia, but the only people that should be calling Pittsburgh ugly should reside in Cleveland or Philly. And their distaste of the city should have little to do with it's actual beauty.

I've been to Pittsburgh a few times. My impressions were that it wasn't especially ugly or attractive. I do like the hills/elevation around it though. Also freaked me out at how it is a ghost town by 6pm, heh.

There are pockets where the action moves, parts of the strip district, the south side, Station Square. But hopefully if the Pens get this project more of that will move to downtown proper.

Oh, and Figgles, I am to modest to call myself an expert, merely an experienced dabbler.

Downtown Pittsburgh is gorgeous. The second you venture out of it, like where the Mellon Arena is(uptown), it's hideous.

Easy breakdown.

The only city with an entrance lives up to it's billing though.

Imagine...one second you're on a highway with railroad tresses above you and tree-filled hills on each side of you, you enter a tunnel, and you come out thrown onto a bridge(the bridge on the right) with that view.

About the only thing that can beat that view is the one from PNC Park...

It's no New York, but for a city of our size, Pittsburgh has it's charm.

But yes, aside from the cultural districts and places like the South Side...the city has little to no night life. It's an extremely boring place at night.

I've lived in Philly and I'd take it over P-burgh 10 times out of 10.

I loved the charm of Philadelphia (even if I hate the sports fans and teams there OH so much).

It's a dirty, dingy city but has tons of beauty. Much moreso than Pittsburgh, IMHO.

Kids on this board crack me up. :)

Founded in 1758, the 55.5-square-mile city of Pittsburgh has more trees than any other city in the country.

And for every one person I hear say Pittsburgh is ugly, there are 1000 people know it's beauty.

Is Al Strachan really this uninformed to be reporting this basically the better part of a year after this was decided and reported?

Pens deadline pushed back
By AL STRACHAN

The deciding date for the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins has been pushed back a few more months. It had been expected this summer, but NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the decision is now expected in December or January.

As reported here earlier, a casino-operating company called Isle of Capri has tabled a proposal for a downtown makeover which incorporates a new arena for the Penguins.

The Penguins' future, Bettman said, is dependent on Isle of Capri getting government approval. "If they don't get it," Bettman said, "and nobody's got a plan to give them (the Penguins) a building on comparable terms, then the team is going to have to move."

Santorum backs new arena financing by slots
Friday, March 24, 2006

U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum used the forum provided by a popular sports radio talk show host yesterday to endorse the idea of using slots revenue to fund a new arena in Pittsburgh.

During an interview with Mark Madden of ESPN/WEAE-AM Radio, Mr. Santorum, R-Pa., said all three applicants competing for the Pittsburgh casino license should come up with a plan for funding an arena.

"My feeling is that this is in a sense a public license and at least a portion of whatever revenues come out of this public license should be used for public purposes, and I can't think of any more important public purpose that this kind of activity could be used for than an arena," he said.

Upgrades to arena would be costly

By Andrew Conte
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, March 24, 2006

Even if Pittsburgh doesn't get a new arena, taxpayers would absorb "significant cost" to keep Mellon Arena in working order, the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority said Thursday.
Gov. Ed Rendell plans to be in the city today and could talk with Mayor Bob O'Connor and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato about an alternate plan to build an arena without slots money, as the Penguins have proposed along with a gambling partner bidding for the city's casino

...........

Rendell has said his alternate proposal would be a backup plan. Even if they talk about the arena today, the elected leaders plan to meet again in the next few weeks to work out details, O'Connor spokesman Dick Skrinjar said.

"The governor rarely visits Pittsburgh when he doesn't talk to every third person about the arena," Rendell spokeswoman Kate Philips said.

The enormous cost to keep the old arena rather than build a new one part of the article is interesting. But note the bolded part. Rendell is certainly feeling the heat big time, eh?

Thats something that isn't talked about enough, IMO. Well maybe it is, I'm definitely on the outside looking in with this thing. But anyway, its painfully obvious a new arena is needed in Pittsburgh, and thats without giving a moments regard to the Penguins, and the IOC want to build one at minimal expense. So if they're turned down, where is the money for the arena going to come from? Because Penguins or not, the city sorely needs one soon.

There are just so many reasons why this really should be a unanimous decision for the IOC plan.

What kills me is the fact you know an arena will be built within a decade.

If the state passes up the opportunity like this...they really are incompetant. The Igloo is done. It's best days were behind it decades ago. It's not a viable arena for anything anymore. Major concerts pass over the city because of the arena leaving it in use almost solely for the circus, the Harlem Globetrotters once a year, one or two ice shows a year, and about 5 concerts a year aside from the Penguins.

Took the wife up to Pittsburgh to see the second game of the home and home the Thrashers had up there back in early January. We really weren't expecting much in Pittsburgh but we actually really enjoyed the town. It felt like the largest small town in America. I mean that in a good way; the folks there were very nice and down to earth. Penguins fans were very NHL savvy and into the game and were not nasty or vulgar like they are in Philly or in NJ. We ended up chatting with several of them during the intermissions and despite some brewing bad blood between the two teams (Sid vs. Kovie) they were really nice.

Mellon Arena sucks. It's definately seen it's day. The concourses are narrow and sections are not that well marked to find if you don't know where you are going. I'd really hate to see Pittsburgh lose their NHL team. It would be a real loss to the league if they moved.

Sim City reference :)

First step in getting a new arena

Mapping out the area

A growing village

1 nuclear power plant, 2 residential zones, 1 industrial zone, 1 commercial zone, roads and powerlines and 12 cars.

Hey, he said my city is good!

For the squeamish you might not want to look at screencap5

It starts

It is almost like Sim City was based on Pittsburgh.

Bowser = the Rust Belt and special interests.

A stadium in Sim City costs $3,000 X 100,000 and we get $300,000,000 for the project, what is the estimated cost for the casino/stadium proposal?

I am in agreement that there is no need for a 20,000 stadium for the Pens. 17-18K + luxury boxes should be enough to sustain a team.

No QC or Winnipeg :(

Personally I do not like the idea of latching onto gambling to get a new stadium, whatever the proposal brings for the Pens does not counter the far reaching effects of addiction and gambling have on people.

Thanks for the good wishes and support. Everyone who has sent them over the past year or two has been very appreciated by all of us.

Rendell's arena talk laid to politics

By Andrew Conte and Brad Bumsted
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, March 28, 2006

With Gov. Ed Rendell facing a tough fight for re-election, political observers say he has revived talk of a new Pittsburgh arena to curry favor with voters in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Once dead, the arena issue has re-emerged this week as a hot topic in Harrisburg.

Senators on the State Government Committee on Wednesday plan to discuss a bill requiring the state Gaming Control Board to consider money for the arena when awarding the license for Pittsburgh's slots casino.

Later that day, Rendell plans to describe his arena plan to lawmakers from Allegheny County. He'll make the proposal public during a visit to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

"It would obviously be a boost to his campaign," said G. Terry Madonna, political science professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster County. "He's been accused of being the governor of Philadelphia and ignoring the West."

With his popularity in Western Pennsylvania lower than he would like, Rendell needs to appear as if he's working to help the Penguins, said Jerry Shuster, a political communications professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Many polls during the past few years have shown sagging support for Rendell in the region.

Pens' allies rip other casino plan

By Andrew Conte
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

As Gov. Ed Rendell unveils his plan for a Pittsburgh arena to state lawmakers in Harrisburg today, his Republican opponent, Lynn Swann, is expected to endorse the Penguins' proposal for building one with slots money.
In a letter to elected officials Tuesday, the Penguins' development team, Pittsburgh First -- which includes its gambling partner, Isle of Capri Casinos -- raised questions about revenue projections and traffic studies submitted by Harrah's Station Square Casino in its competing bid for the city's slots parlor.

Swann plans to hold a news conference at noon today to discuss the arena, said his campaign spokeswoman, Melissa Walters. He is expected to back the proposal by Pittsburgh First and Isle of Capri, which has offered $290 million to build an arena if the company wins the casino license
