Brylin is what everybody hopes a Russian player will be like. What Kovalchuk just did is everybody's greatest fear about Russian players.

But think about this, though :

Did the KHL exist during SARGE's era here? I'm not sure it did(let me know if I'm wrong).

The KHL nowadays is a bit more organized and more financially-solvent to give money out like it was nothing to entice Russian-born players in returning home. Who is to say that if the KHL was basically "available" back when Sarge was playing that he wouldn't have bolted.

The KHL as it currently exists didn't come into being until 2007 or 2008, I believe.

Remember in 2010 when this team was god awful.
JMAC was bumbling, Parise was either invisible or injured, Kovy was a train wreck, and Clarkson fell down more than usual...

Who was the one guy who still put the puck in the net and played good consistent hockey?
Patrik Elias, that's who.

come to san jose Patty

No, you can't have him :puppy:

You can do the right thing, though.... and just cross over to the dark side :devdance:

Can't have him. True Devil for life!!!

Martyowns is right though. I get that the forward correlation, but a Marty appreciation should be happening too. Two guys that have put the logo first for years and they reaped the rewards of it.

Don't we have a thread about building a statue for Marty?
There's definitely one post-SCF, as well

Or we could just forego the threads and construct the long over due shrine to Elias, Dano, Marty and Brylin

Put the damn "C" on his chest... He was his countries captain and we all know where his loyalty lies... I like Salvador but Elias deserved the C back when they gave it to him and deserves it now more than ever!

Elias is the captain in my mind, regardless of who wears the C

It's not like they just set up their first hockey league over there. The Russian Super League was there and many Russians did choose to play there. It was a risk then just as it is now. Maybe there wasn't nearly as much oil money being thrown around, but it was a factor.

Just because half this board was Sharks bandwagoners last playoffs, doesn't mean you can have Patty. Go find your own Patty. Shoo ;)

They already have their own Patty. They're being greedy by trying to poach ours too.

But that's just it, Saugus.

If the KHL all of a sudden offered a lot of money to Sarge(and they DID have the amount of "Oil Money" then that they do now), you don't think it would be possible for him to just up and leave?

Look, I don't like doing these what-if scenarios, especially to one who was as loyal to this organization as Marty and Patty is. But you just have to wonder, you know?

They wouldn't have offered huge money to guys like Brylin though. It's difficult to speculate about it, you're right.

That's not necessarily true. KHL teams have been offering pretty crazy money to NHL bottom-6ers like Zharkov and Leo Komarov (who's technically Finnish). I wouldn't underestimate the KHL's ability to draw European talent these days, especially guys at the bottom of the pay grade. There's a reason you don't see a lot of young Eastern Euro grinders these days.

Stuff that like makes me really appreciate guys like Elias and Brodeur.

Probably my all time favorite Devils forward.

I remember having an debate with a Flyers fan early in the 99-00 season and his argument was that the Devils had no offense. He asked who was going to score then he sarcastically suggested Elias. Shortly later Elias went on a crazy multi-game point streak that regular season then crushed the hopes and dreams of Flyers fans on the way to winning the cup

Every year, my friend organizes a sports memorabilia auction to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Every year, there seems to be a Devils related item that he has procured to bait me.

This year's auction was yesterday and I won a puck signed by Patty in the above display. Thankfully my other friends were in line for beer and weren't around to bid me up on it like in previous years (a few years back, I think they bid me up to $110 for a Marty auto'd puck).

The auction/BBQ also included a ticket to last night's Padre game which was the Lincecum no hitter.

Elias was very close to becoming a Ranger, and being hated. The Devils ended up matching the Rangers' $ offer of $42M, and that's why Patty stayed.

Just some perspective.

Buzzkills

I was a bit bewildered at the time, but he has been one of the best players on the ice season after season after season.. even at the age of 37. That's enough to appreciate the hell out of the man.

He's done everything he's been able to do for this franchise, all is forgiven.

Patty was more or less strong arming Lou to give him the contract he wanted and deserved no? I kind of doubt he'd want to play for the rangers. But that's probably wishful thinking on my part.
