No you actually don’t need a third team, the Hawks have the ability to eat 50% of Kane and/or Toews contracts and take back contracts equal to the other 50%.

For example, Kane to the Leafs at 50% = $5.25m, Leafs send Kerfoot $3.5m and Holl $2m back in the deal. Leafs actually create $250,000 in annual cap space, now just add the pieces to satisfy the Hawks.

Or

Kane to the Oilers at 50% retained = $5.25m, Oilers send Puljujarvi $3m and Foegele $2.75 in annual cap space. Oilers actually create $500,000 in cap space, again just add the pieces to satisfy the Hawks.

Most teams have a bad contract or two they would like to offload, the Hawks would be willing to help those teams to finalize a deal if the price is right.
The problem is dubas doesn’t think holl or kerfooot are bad contracts….

Cool!

So which defensemen replaces Holl and how is it possible he only makes $250,000?

Strange irrational hate.... he makes mistakes, and that's all that people remember. He's an otherwise solid #4, big RHD, not overly physical, plays the PK well. He will likely move on next year, get a $4-5 mil contract, and play well for another team. Yet, when Leafs fans look at other teams big RHD, who can PK, we get all lovesick over them, and are willing to send a ton of assets.

Note, Sandin's results are more of a usage, QoC than saying he's the best guy...

I think enough rationale has been provided, he makes bonehead plays almost nightly. Especially bad in the playoffs.

4-5M ? LOL.

Steering back to the topic at hand.

With Kane's apparent health issues, the only way I could see Toronto trading for him would be a ratcheting series of conditional picks, similar to how Chicago acquired Timonen back in 2015.

(The below is not a value judgement, just an example)

Example:

:leafs

Patrick Kane (50% Retained)

:hawks
Alexander Kerfoot +

1 of the following

Toronto's 2023 2nd round pick
OR

Toronto's 2024 1st round pick (if Kane plays more than 4 games in the playoffs)
OR

Toronto's 2023 1st round pick (if Kane plays more than 8 games in the playoffs)

OR
Toronto's 2023 1st and 2024 2nd round pick (if Toronto makes the 2023 Cup Final)
I would be good with the last one. We make it to the Cup Final f*** a first round pick you can have it.

We wouldn't need to clear 250K or any space, he's already on the roster and within the cap

Yes, but the post you were responding was saying that Holl and Kerfoot would be dealt and Kane would be acquired and the Leafs would net $250,000 in cap space.

I then asked who replace Holl, who currently has a roster spot, and you said Timmins. So if Timmins slides into Holl's spot, who takes Timmins spot on the depth chart and he will obviously cost more than $250K.

We wouldn't have net $250K, we would be freeing up another $250K, giving us about 1.4M ish

The Rangers and Leafs have both blown their metaphorical wads already. Does Kane consider other teams?

leafs still have room for kane, believe it or not.

those 2 players they just acquired have 3.1 mil in cap. if leafs dump kerfoot, they can fit a double retained kane easy

Reporter: So, Toronto and the Rangers have made trades and are unlikely to bring you in

Who? And you don’t think other teams around the league could beat a purely prospects offer

Robertson? Steeves? Hirvonen? Minten? Holmberg? (leafs likely want to keep for playoff run) Niemela?

they do have nice prospects
