What @Lobster57 said. It's too good not to run with a little bit  I have seen some pretty heinous hot takes on this forum over the years, but I think that Taro Tsujimoto's masterpiece on this subject is the worst I've ever seen.
I generally try to avoid low-hanging fruit, but it has been impossible for me to resist that piece of fruit.

The missed games/points/potential accolades are starting to pile up for Bergeron because of things that have happened in his career that were out of his control, such as being a player during the time of one and a half lockouts, the suspended season due to coronavirus, and the missed season from being hit from behind by Jones. That's like what, over 200 games right there? He should be a 1000+ point player right now.

1000+ point player only because he’s playing with superstars like Marchand+Pasta and scoring EN goals.

And his nose has probably been broken 16 times

At least three that I can recall, anyway. Ouch...

So I got about 20 games into the Coyle puck protection compilation before I started to think my time would be better served doing a joint Bergy/Marchy exercise. I'm looking at defensive play by Bergy and puck handling by Marchand, like mainly quick cut stuff where he's using his strength and agility to weave in and out of people. NHL's stat keeping is really bad for giveaways/takeaways so going shift by shift. Super time consuming, but hoping to get it all compiled this month before the NHL access thing runs out. There's enough of an overlap there to get the Marchy stuff.

I'm up to 27 plays for Bergeron after 5 games LMAO. I'm not doing literally every touch or anything but just stuff that leads to change of possession, more of the notable stuff. Not gonna be a sexy video but just something different, will be good for people that really like the nuts and bolts of the game. The Marchy one will be a lot sexier.

I'm 41 games in (of 61) and have 215 plays/sequences now, a lot of them shifts with multiple disruptions/steals and whatnot.

That is impressive and most likely unprecedented homework. Really nice job, @Trap Jesus
It ended up being 377 plays/sequences in 61 games lol. Dafoomie's to edit but with longer plays involved and the time stamps given it's just over an hour long. I think that's good though because with defensive play it's not so much "highlights" as it is how often and consistently a player can be disruptive and translate defense into offense.

And y'all will be sending this video to all the Selke voters, right? ;)

Lol it would definitely be a good point of reference for that.

Biggest thing that stood out to me is how good he is late in games, there were a few sequences I could just run in its entirety with things always going on, he just clamps down so much. Also, he really doesn't need to hit, there are so few sequences in there involving hits, although one of my favorite plays is a hit (as a Preds player is breaking out, Bergeron literally hides behind one of the Preds forwards who's right in front of the puck carrier then pounces out from behind him at the opposing blueline to remove the Pred from the puck, allowing Marchy to collect it in the neutral zone).

I think there were only a few goals against that I thought he could have realistically done a better job on, one vs. the Rangers in particular. He's just so incredibly consistent.

I love that even though he gets used in an offensive role more now in the last few years than he has in the past, he doesn't ever cheat or slack on his defensive assignments. I think there's a lot of logical fallacy going on with fans on this website that just because his offensive zone starts go up, he's not as good defensively. His awareness doesn't change, regardless of the role they use him for.

Oh yeah, hockey's such a fluid game that you're going to be in all 3 zones a lot regardless of zone starts. Marchy and Pasta are cheating up ice and taking risks with dekes, but Bergy is steady as ever. He doesn't cheat at all.
