This is a cap move for the Blues. We needed the extra million+ Sanford makes elsewhere. This way we do not need to trade Tarasenko if we cannot find the right deal. The Blues were plenty deep already, so Sanford might have naturally been a 4th liner depending on how camp shakes out. Brown can compete for a 4th line/press box slot. If he plays well enough to earn it, great. If not, we got the cap space we needed.

I do wish we could have gotten a better player or higher pick coming back for Sanford though. $2M is not overpaid for what Sanford brings, so he is not a cap dump. He should have some value. He is frustratingly inconsistent and bone-headed at times, but he also puts up points overall. I am not a Sanford fan at all, but the Blues might end up missing him if they do end up trading Tarasenk for a LD (like they should). 2 top 9 forwards traded would hurt our forward depth a bit.

Not to shit on Brown. but you don't want him on your 4th line, top 6 or bust top 9 at the minimum he needs offensive zone starts and he is not that good defensively or at least not as defensively sound as 4th liner should be.

Good trade for both teams. Sanford was an expiring contract and a bit redundant with STL's forward group, especially with Tarasenko not being traded. Getting a buy-low prospect for him is a nice piece of business to both get some cap room and swing on a young player. On Ottawa's end, it wouldn't surprise me if Sanford produces well with more ice time and becomes a relatively valuable deadline piece for more picks.

More ice time for Sanford? He regularly played with RoR, he got too much ice time in STL

Then its an even worse return then. He should not be getting top 9 time over Perron, RoR, Buchnevich,Saad,Schenn, Tarasenko, Thomas, Kyrou, Sunqvist, Bozak or Barbashev. The only role for him is the last 4th line spot or press box barring substantial injuries.

Like this trade for St. Louis, the Blues gained cap space.

Brown could be with the Blues roster as a 4th line C or RW until Sundqvist returns from injury, that’s if Logan Brown has a good training camp with St. Louis.

Both were worth a 3rd.

Sanford is a legitimate NHLer, Logan has struggled to get there.Sanford makes more money, but is more proven.

St. Louis hedges their bet with a conditional 4th if Logan can't make it out of camp or gets injured again.

LOL. At least Ottawa got the winger we needed with some size.

That’s the problem, Sanford was forced to play on the top 6 when he’s a 3rd line player.

He'll only be good as your 4th line center if you have some guys on your fourth line to support him. Otherwise I can see you getting very mad at him. He can create offense from nothing, but defensively he's a bit of a lost cause. He 's just too slow and not smart defensively.

Might as well just keep him in your press box than play him bottom-6 unless you have the right mix to support him.

If you let him start in the defensive zone and his team doesn't have the puck, he's just going to watch the play and not contribute. He's also not fast, so it is hard for him to backcheck if there is a turnover.

Stick him with the right mix though and he'll create offense without any help. Great at gaining the offensive zone too.

Like others have said, he's not a 4th line player. He's a low intensity floater who has high skill and tries risky plays. He's like a much worse 25 year old Jason Spezza. They don't belong on a checking or defensive line or any grind line of any kind. It's a scoring line or in the AHL on a scoring line.

If you play him with a couple possession driving linemates so he can float around and bang in leftovers, Sanford can at least be numbers-productive, if he’s being counted on for anything else, good luck.

He was productive on O’Reilly and Perron’s line. He’s sucked with almost everyone else.
harumph... total passenger

good riddance

now STL is cap compliant as well

Not sure if there is a roster spot for him in St Louis

I knew the Blues would deal Sanford, just had the feeling looking at how many forwards they have, that team didn't have a spot for Sanford

Brown though I'm not sure why they targeted as I don't see where he even plays on a team with

Perron, RoR, Tank (for now), Schenn, Buch, Kyrou, Thomas Saad, + Sundqvist, Barbashev, Bozak (maybe beats him out), Clifford

They have 8 top 6ish capable forwards and 4 bottom 6 guys already

Logan Brown and Kim Kostin should be battling it out for 12th spot with Bozak

So if St Louis Wanted could they just send Brown to the AHL and or only play him a max of 29 regular season games so that they could guarantee themselves the 4th rounder?

I'm thinking Kostin will have Blues fans saying "Zach who?" soon enuff
