shouldn't have donated that liver to Melnyk, should have let nature take its course :) Dorion had to be the mysterious donor, right?

He also sent a message to the anonymous donor.
“Before the surgery, I was informed that my donor had told the surgeon to send me one (remarkably Canadian) message: ‘I’d like to remain anonymous, but please tell Eugene I want him to bring a Stanley Cup to Ottawa.’,” Melnyk said. “To whoever saved my life, I just want you know that your kindness has touched me in a way that I feel I can never repay.
“But I’m working on it.”
Nope... Doug Wilson’s liver.

Feel bad for Sens fans.

I'm pretty certain one or both of Stone and Duchene will stay to lead the re-build. I'm sure they're waiting to see just how good the young guys are...but based on what Dorion has said, he wants them around. Guess we'll see.

If either of them have any intrest in winning they walk.

If they really want to "rebuild" properly, you deal anyone on an expiring contract at the deadline and tank. That plan usually makes a lot of sense, and it makes sense because you're getting assets back while weakening your team and getting a better draft pick.

We don't have our draft pick, so I have no idea what our plan is.

Seriously sometimes I think Pierre Dorion is an inside man for the Habs or something and his job is to make us as bad as possible.

Anyways, here are all of the guys with some trade value and/or expiring deals we could potentially sell at or before the deadline:
- Stone (pretty good package)
- Duchene (good package)
- Dzingel (late 1st or a 2nd+3rd)
- Wideman (late 2nd)
- Ceci (late 1st or a 2nd+3rd)
- Anderson (3rd)
- Pyatt (5th)
- Paajarvi (5th)
- Smith (5th)
- Condon (5th)

Not looking very bright at this point but at least we'll get to see what the likes of Tkachuk, Brown, White, Batherson, Formenton, Chlapik, Balcers, Norris and Jaros can do over the next 2 years.

I think you are highly over-valuing Wideman. I'd be shocked if he returned anything more than a 4th/5th round pick. I know last year he put up good numbers, but that sample size is far too small for any team out there to give up a 2nd. Every NHL team has a couple Widemans in their system.

Seeing as Ottawa still lacks a 1st in 2019 unless the Sharks somehow miss the playoffs; I would imagine either Duchene or Stone, likely both, are dealt to acquire a 1st this year. That being said, Dorian has put himself in a terrible place in terms of leverage. The entire league knows they want a 1st in 2019, the draft looks deep, and they also know that Duchene and Stone are unlikely to both sign in Ottawa. In the end I’d guess Stone ends up in Colorado for their 1st back a cap dump. Duchene fetches a 2nd and ify prospect after starting the season very rough due to the lack of support.

Bobby Ryan stays due to cap floor and sheer lack of interest for his contract.

Craig Anderson fetches a 2nd or 3rd from Carolina when their goaltending fails yet again.

Like Buffalo 2 or 3 years ago, most depth players have little to no value due to their stats on an awful Senators team. Potentially some team steals a bargain player from Ottawa for peanuts.

By why? We didn't win with either last year AND we had Karlsson .

We should trade both to be honest

Stone would be fantastic in the Leafs top-6.
Also, did Ottawa end up signing Ceci?

Didn’t Duchene already remark about that when he was traded? I think he is a lost cause.

Stone maybe you can keep. But he’s probably the only guy left you’ll get a 1st rounder for. Maybe.

If it makes Sens fans feel better, my team traded the MVP of the league in 2005 for junk and became a dumpster fire. 3 years later they were back in contention.

This might be one of those times a cheap owner is handy. They can skirt the cap floor for a few years, bottom out completely and go from there.

Not a lot of fun while it’s happening though. I suggest picking a second team to follow for a bit!

I'm a Boston fan myself.

But for Ottawa, Duchene said he wants to play for a winning team, Ottawa is the biggest mess there is.

Stone signed a 1 year contract taking him to UFA and just watched Karlsson get traded like this.

It's going to be highly motivated to hit the bottom and watch Colorado call the prospect on their pick.
That's the real killer, no hope for players.

Ya thought you were, that was more directed at the Sens fans. That stretch of Bruins hockey was horrific.

If I’m Ottawa I get what I can for Duchene. If nothing else it’s to let the guy see the playoffs for once in his career.

Stone on the other hand I think I try to keep. Let him use the company jet. Get him a position parliament (no one in Canada pays attention to that crap anyway). Make him feel like a king for a year.

The lost pick they’ve just gotta let go. Pretend there isn’t a draft at all in 2019. Treat it like an ex. Convince yourself you’re better off without it. All they’ve lost there is time.

I’d assume they’ll wait until January to trade Stone. That way teams can talk with him about an extension and they could possibly get better value if he’s traded with the agreement to extend.

Duchene on the other hand would probably make more sense to trade now. Teams can already talk extension and they’d probably have him to improve their team for the entire year instead of just from the deadline-on.

He's going to get a boatload of time this year. He had 8 points in 16 games before tearing his hamstring this year. It's a contract year. I think he'll put up 40 points this year. And will be a powerplay specialist. Someone will pay a 2nd for him, especially a contender which will be a late 2nd. I think he'll surprise many this year as will Wolanin.

Duchene has said he is intrigued about the Tavares ufa process.
I would be surprised to see Duchene sign an extension ( even if traded)

That's actually what Pierre Dorion has been saying.

He’ll sign an extension if he’s traded to a place he wants to be aka Nashville.

How many teams would he be willing to pass up a chance at the ufa market for?

And how many of those teams are willing to give up quality, cost controlled talent for him?

Nashville might be the only one.

As for your second question, I think we learned yesterday that nobody has to give up quality.

That's actually what Pierre Dorion has been saying.

It’s the best way to go about their business. Toronto got laughed at for gifting Boston the 2nd overall pick. Couple years later nobody cared, and today it’s barely brought up. Maximize the returns on the players they want to deal, don’t worry about anything outside of the team. They still have a good chance at top five picks in 2020 and 2021.

Even with their flaws Ottawa has always been a pretty dam good drafting/development team. 3 extra first rounders (assuming Stone and Duchene pull one each), a few extra prospects, and a couple years of drafting high will do them well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zetterberg is on the Sens LTIR soon, even if the Red Wings are rebuilding. I feel like they will operate at the cap a lot easier than the Sens.

An unextended EK did not bring back high end, young talent.

But Duchene, agreeing to an extension before a trade is completed, should bring back quality, cost controlled assets

I’m not so sure that’s true. Ottawa traded Kyle Turris with a known agreement to extend along with a 1st, Shane Bowers, a 3rd and Hammond for Matt Duchene who couldn’t even talk extension.

I know one trade doesn’t set the market but Ottawa is setting a pretty solid trend of not getting good value for their players. There’s a recent example of them trading a non-extended UFA and an example of an extended on. Both were horrible value.

This made me laugh, "treat it like an ex..."
