And by how do you measure this exactly? I don't disagree with this necessarily (I don't listen to metal enough... only the interesting genres and bands), but I know that Finland has not produced a band that equals Opeth for me personally. Another band that Finland has no real answer to (in a pretty different subgenre of metal, though) in my opinion is Cult of Luna.

Also, Sweden seemingly beats Finland hands down when it comes to "kikkelimetalli" ;)
If I listened to ****, I'd much rather listen to firm ****, like Kalmah instead of diarrhoa like Opeth.

Well, it just means we appreciate different things in music. I like creativity, atmosphere and originality, you like firm ****. But to each his own.

Eurodance rocks ! ...unless that's an oxymoron.

I feel like I must pay a tribute to Laila Kinnunen, arguably the greatest female pop singer in Finnish music history plus quite the babe back in the 60s. RIP. I could list over a hundred songs sung in nearly a dozen different languages, but I'll settle for three:

Little Peggy March cover

Russian folk song, sung in Finnish

Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, sung in Finnish

No time to read all pages, read first two or three, but were the Korpiklaani mentioned allready? Some finnish folk-metal, that foreigners seem to like too. :D

Finnish a cappella group Club For Five covering Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms. The video has been edited a bit, but the vocals are live.

Hmmm Finnish Music..

Amorphis
Apocalyptica
Beherit
Blackthrone
Children Of Bodom ( New stuff is beyond terribad )
Cryhavoc
Demilich
Dreamtale
Ensiferum
Finntroll
Impaled Nazerene
Kalmah
Lordi
Moonsorrow
Nocturnal Winds
Northern Kings
Sonata Arctica
Turisas
Tyr

All I could think of off the top of my head.. it was late/early zzz.

Aren't Tyr from the Faroer Isalnds? Or is there a Finnish Band, that goes by the same name?
Anyway, nice list with a lot of good stuff. My personal favourites among Finnish bands are:
Nightwish, Turisas, Lordi, Stratovarius, Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Apocalyptica. Though there might be others I have just not identified as Finnish yet, since most of the time I don't care where the music comes from as long as I like it.

Although I have noticed that, most bands I really like are from Finland, Sweden or Germany (Most of our music sucks, but when it comes to Metal we have some decent bands here).

I didn't see Norther mentioned! Also, shoutouts to the guys who mentioned Insomnium and Sentenced!

I'm not going to lie, but Finnish metal is quickly overcoming much of what I listen to at the moment. I was wondering what you guys thought the driving force is for a lot of metal bands that come out of Finland? Did somebody set the mold and others are trying to copy it? I'm trying to learn a little back history about the genre! Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

I think it has something to do with the dark, gray and cold enviroment. The overall mood of a lot of Finnish men isn't really that happy an joyfull (without alcohol) and we also have a history of melancholia in our songs. Anyway someone could tell you more in detail...

You guys have any chill out alt. rock like our 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers and to a lesser extent Bush? Something smooth and mainstream?

Thanks!

The Crash were something like that, but perhaps more pop than rock plus their vocalist's unique voice might be tough to tolerate for some people. Try them out:
