I think the Arizona offer is probably going to end up being a fair offer for what he's going to get offered on the open market. I think Friedman reported they offered like 7.25 for 5 years. He may top out at 8, but I think the ball park is right. Hard to believe there was a time where most people thought he was going to get 10-11.

To be fair he’s had one of the worst contract years for a significant star in history but yeah, his market value is likely way below what we thought it would be when the year began.

You guys are depressing me with the "what if's", it is what it is, we got three first rounders, Fitz needs to make them count. And I wouldn't be opposed to moving up with one of them to grab Asakrov, I dunno if he makes it to 18.

At this point, I'm beginning to warm up to moving up but to get Askarov?

I don't know about that.

But I would like to move up to get as close as to where we pick at #7 as possible as I feel the NHL has robbed us (with Hynes screwing us over as the cherry on top of the s--t sundae) of a high pick just about near our own.

Package both first rounders to move up to #8 or something.

(is that feasible? Probably not as it'll take more than that as I'm not the GM so I don't know these things but it would make things a bit more palatable)

Honestly, there's a really easy move up opportunity if we chose to go that route, I think. Vancouver's 1st for Kris Russell + Edmonton's #14 (maybe throw in a b prospect from Edmonton as well). Russell is a flat out cap dump at this point, but we have no LD and he can be a warm body there for one year. The deal is only 1 year 4 million. I'm not sure that I would want to spend 4 million to move up to 14, as there are probably better ways to spend that cap money, even for a year, but really depends on who it is for. Someone is going to take a little bit of a tumble, and there could easily be a guy I'm interested and be willing to make that sort of deal for.

His 2 seasons after the MVP season have largely tanked his contract outlook. Granted the flat cap doesn't help his situation, but if he put up a ~75 point pace this season his last 3 seasons would look much better overall than ...MVP season, miss 60% of a season, ~60 point player. And looking at Halls last 6 years as a whole he does seem to be more of a 65 point player than he does a 95 point MVP.

Look at the goalies in the playoffs right now and then explain to me why drafting a goalie so high makes sense.

If I knew for certain that Blackwood is capable of being an elite goalie, I wouldn't even think of Askarov, and I still have faith in Blackwood, but after Blackwood we really don't have anything else to fall back on.

Plus think of the debates for the next 10-15 years between us and Isles and Rags fans on whose Russian goalie is better, it would be like the Brodeur-Hasek-Roy battles on HF some of us have taken in over the past 15+ years

Look at all the top line players left in the playoffs. You need those to compete also. And yeah, you need your goalie to be great, but you don't need a great goalie.

I have faith in Blackwood because he's been playing in front of a crappy defense, get that unit worked out and he might shine. But I do like Askarov, got a feeling he can be a special player.

Agree. I certainly have not looked, but I cannot imagine it happens too often that someone wins the Hart and was never a candidate for it any other year in their career.

I think he realizes that if he wanted that big money contract, he should have grabbed it from us right after he won the MVP when he value was at his peak.

What a wasted opportunity and what a break for us, this guy just doesn't have it, all the teams he plays on underachieve.

"I should've just signed an extension in Jersey"
They never offered him one. I had a feeling when Hall stated in camp that the Devils told him they would not make him an offer until they saw him play that the knee injury was more serious than we thought. He has not looked like the same player since that injury.

He can be for sure, no doubt about that. It's just not what I would bet on organizationally when there's so much other stuff needed and when goalies typically take so long to reach the NHL. Keep picking goalies late and hope one turns out.

he could not re-sign after the 2018 season though. The earliest he could have re-signed was last July
