I can't argue too hard against you here. I am a huge fan and I know what McDavid means to the team.. but $12.5 Million AAV is a huge chunk of cap space. I guess to get him locked up for 8 years meant this kind of number.
Is that the argument Matthews and his agent are using in their negotiations? If he is looking for $11 million / year I would trade him next off season and get a massive haul.
Agreed, 12.5 Million AVV is high, but if anybody should make that right now, it is him (McDavid). The cap world just makes that high of a salary a roadblock, if you don't have the right numbers and talent around him. So draft turnover, and ELC's need to play a major role. McDavid should come in at 10m (this is just my opinion, and not based on other contracts signed) and that 10m should have been the top contract. Of course this is also hard because percentage of cap based on the cap amount can be tricky when it's always rising.
I do think the metrics and talent (when healthy) will put Matty right behind McDavid during the next decade, but at 11m.... I would be hard pressed to pay him that right now. I guess I don't know if I would move him, but I would test his character a bit, see if he wants to be here long term, and is he a team first guy, or money guy.
Based on contracts around the league, Matty should be coming in between 9-10.25 Million.
If we pay based only on numbers, draft position, and position played, who knows what he would actually get.
I guess we will see what happens
P.S. When people say he should be getting McDavid money, I would love to see the argument for this, or for Taveres money (yet) sure in the future he will improve his game, I see 100pt seasons, more assists, 2 way play, and amazing analytics.
However right now, in 2018, what is the argument that he should be getting McDavid type money lol
