As a Finn it's always on an intriguing prospect to think about Wings acquiring Finnish talent.

Undrafted Kaski had a season for the ages: the 23 year old led the Liiga D-men in goals (19) and points (51) in 59 games and was voted the best player of the regular season. He is big (6.3, 187 lbs) and likes to shoot: he also led Liiga in shots taken.

Oliwer Kaski at eliteprospects.com

Now the biggest Finnish hockey media outlet Jatkoaika.com had an article about Kaski looking to sign with an NHL team (1-way or 2-way contract):

Uutta: Pelicans menettää Liigan sensaatiotykin Oliwer Kasken NHL:ään

Considering our...challenges and failures in building our back end, I reckon Kaski would be the perfect low risk/high reward option. Big, mobile, young and has played in a NA rink before.

Thoughts?

...I betcha Kaski asks for #77 your avatar jersey #. darkside

Just checked his shooting/60 numbers from Finnish liiga. Finnish league shot amounts are "Fenwick", both shots on goal and wide/over.

He did play 59 games, had 20:39 average Ice-Time and did have 398 Fenwick shot attempts.

That's gives a value of 19.60 for Fenwick/60.

As comparison, these are the highest individual values from NHL regular season:

Fenwick/60:
1. Dougie Hamilton 13.65
2. Brent Burns 12.68
3. Erik Karlsson 11.56
4. Shea Weber 11.07
5. Mark Giordano 10.60

He is really shooting like mad with very high rate. For sure, it ain't as easy in NHL than Liiga, but even if you cut 50% of his shooting away, he still falls not futher than on the Top10, between Torey Krug's (9.90) and Dusting Byfuglien's (9.79) shooting/60 -rates.

I mean Giordano logs damn near as much time as Burns, nearly kept up with his scoring pace, starts over 10% more shifts in the D-zone, and still holds every single defensive category over Burns’ head. If he doesn’t win the Norris, it will be absolute sin.

Dont take anyone in this thread seriously if they dont have Gio the front runner for the Norris. He deserves to win in an absolute land slide. Just a bad hot take saying hes third or worse in the Norris race.

Assuming he can get the puck out of his own end at the NHL level....

Also, he's got a slow windup on his slapper, which won't reach the goalie in the NHL. It's one thing when a forward like Frk or Pulki does it, when a D-man gets blocked, it's headed the other way in a hurry.

All of Kaski's shots are not "slow windups". Just watch him play. He will use his wrister on the traffic and also has a fast snapshot, just seen at WC. Good selection of different type of shots. Too bad Finland power-play teammates are currently so crap that they aren't working as a unit at all.

Kaski has some flaws on his play, but so did have Filip Hronek. Same "slow windup" was his habit. Those can be coached off, and lot depends of the screeners. Wrong timing in front of the net and the point-man has to wait for the shot. Then opposite forward has too much time to block the shot. Right timing from the net-front player and the shot comes faster + higher probability to be succesful.

Hard to tell how good he is or could be, as in the videos to me he looks like a really good player, playing against inferior competition. Not running down Liiga, but the NHL is a whole different ball game so to speak. Obviously would love if we got a 4o-60 pt offensive blueliner, with preference for higher.

All I can find are highlights, and that's all I've got to judge with. If you've got any links to games, please share.

I'll take a #4ish (NHL)30 pt., young Offensive 23yr.old RHD PMDman with Pro experience & great stats, cheap, controlled, low risk, low reward..as I type this, I believe I already stated the above, sleep deprivation.

Congrats of mistake of the century.
You guys are getting mediocre EHT ( EuroHockeyTour) level dman with big size and muffin shot.

Kaski hasn't showed nothing in IIHF men's worlds why he should be NHLer next season.
If Oliver Kaski is NHL lineup in Red Wings when next season starts something is terribly wrong.

We'll be lucky if the Wings don't fold as a result of this signing

Man, what are the Wings going to do, if he busts out and never plays significant hockey for us? How will they recoup the $800,000-$925,000 of money they wasted and how will they ever get past the inevitable buyout that will be necessary?

According to DetNews he's signing a 1 year 2 way ELC contract, so the max AHL salary is $70k. (Hell, I make more money than that.) He won't need to be bought out, since it's one season.

Absolutely no risk for the Wings, the roster spot can be freed up by not resigning Chelios.

That post was dripping with so much sarcasm I'm surprised the e-ink didn't run.

What is a muffin shot?

Why should he be NHLr at next season?

Why can't he first get adjusted to NA hockey and then we'll see what happens.
