would you rather we draft Smith ? Fabbro was taken 17th in 2016 and I could see him stepping in right away, good shot, rhd and could potential qb our pp

Dante was the 17th pick and ranked around there. Yes he's progressing well, but I don't think I'm willing to give up the 10th which should be a higher potential player

Think the 10th has more value than Fabbro. Rather look elsewhere or BPA

The last time we traded for a NHL prospect that we hoped was ready we ended up with Reinhart. We need a guy that has NHL time under his belt to trade that 10th. Preferably more than what Reinhart had.

At this point I don't know. Fabbro can be good but he has played the last 2 world juniors for Canada and has 1 point in 14 games in the 2 years. For an offensive D thats really...disappointing.

Oilers have 12 million in cap when you drop off Montoya Salary that reduces roster to 18 players , so after Nurse and Strome take 8 million min on new contracts that leaves a roster of 20 with 4 million left. Bear 7th dman @725 and Yamamoto @900 k they're left with 2.4 million to look for a winger , those who are saying these buyouts are minor the difference between a 4 million winger and a 2.4 is big . Chia took 3 years to cripple this team . And if any of Puljujarvi or Yamamoto hit their bonuses the team is screwed heading into 19/20

This is not the NBA,there is more then one player to take a team to playoffs.Everyone on the team played as a team and won it because everyone was healthy.

Yeah that's the thing: how often do you get a season where none of your key players miss any time at all?

That's assuming they aren't trading people away. Do people really believe we are always gonna be stuck with contracts and they NEVER move? sigh

Well the 3 guys the Oilers would want to move have full NMC right now so....makes it extremely difficult because you have to do 2 things.

a) Find a team who wants them
b) Hope the player is willing to waive to go there

Definitely possible but the chances of it happening are pretty low.

You asked for one reason, I gave you one reason.

You didn't like the answer, so more b****** occurs.

You didn’t give a reason how it benefits the team having 38 open roster spots instead of 39 gives zero benefit. It’s like how all of our cap space lt year was a benefit according to some. It wasn’t. We didn’t even use it facilitate trades for other clubs and take on a bad cap hit for the remainder of the season in exchange for a pick.

All this move does is lower our own cap by 300k. That’s it. There no way to put lipstick on that pig. Sure it’s more like a piglet, but it still stinks.

Not defending the Pouliot/Gryba buyouts but it's worth pointing out two-thirds of the league is working with dead cap space due to buyouts, retained salary, or terminated contracts.

I saw that too and was disappointed, I just don't want us to take smith at 10... it almost feels like they will no matter what cause he cheered for the oilers .... Bob green likes him and well remember reinhart?

you make a very good point, I do think the situations are different as BU is a very good program, but I see where u are coming from... that reinhart deal has really scared us away from trading picks for young dmen :(

How many of those teams have 21 mill eaten up by 2 players?
Nothing wrong with paying lots for good players but you have to be more careful with the cap outside of that.

That certainly does provide a clearer perspective.

I like Chia more than most around here, but all his buyouts have been brutal decisions. We bought out Korpikoski instead of just waiting a year, and having a useful bottom 6er. We bought out Pouliot with 2 years left when we had the open capspace to have kept him an extra year, which would reduce the buyout term from 4 years to 2. And now we bought out Gryba which manages to gain us salary instead of reducing it.

Yeah I’ve been labeled as a Chia lover many times. But it’s hard to remember the last time he did something good for the club. Not a single buyout has been necessary or beneficial in any way.
