you can give the credit to whoever you want,
bottom line is, whatever team Lou becomes a part of IMPROVES!!....same thing will happen with NYI this season, they will make playoffs we will not,
you can stick your head in the sand all you want
The why matters a lot though. He did a pretty terrible job towards the end of his tenure in New Jersey for a period of time that would have gotten him pilloried in a market like Montreal. Shero had to put in a lot of work to dig that team out of the mess he inherited and he's still doing that.
And there HAS to be more than just bottom line thinking. You can't just say, its Lou, of course he'll fix everything. Tavares isn't a lock to re-sign with Lou, he liked Snow and Weight a lot. The Islanders have a worse D-core than Montreal and significantly worse goaltending.
I'm not sticking my head in the sand, I'd just prefer to actually look at Lou's recent track record instead of the results.
Look at Bergevin. He came in before the 2012 draft, cut dead weight, added pieces and saw the team make the conference finals in two years. Was that him, or the situation he inherited? Dorion came into Ottawa and they made the conference finals the next season. Look where they are now. Situation matters.
