Everyone fails their drivers test the first time. At least, everyone I know did.

I failed because I was driving down a hill and was not the right speed limit the moment I hit the the speed limit sign at the bottom of said hill. I was ticked.

Though it made up for it the following time I tried. Apparently, the driver before me that day was a Chinese immigrant brought in by a priest. Didn't speak a word of English, yet still wanted to get a drivers license. When it was my turn, my instructor was happy that I simply spoke the same language as he did.

I didn't think it was possible to fail the driving test in NC or in the USA at all really. Probably the easiest licensing of industrialized nations. Didn't kill anyone during the test in which you drove on an empty two lane road in the middle of the day? Here's your license.

Get off the road ya bums.

my fail was weird. I was pulling out of the parking lot of the Harris Teeter in Greenville off of Charles Boulevard. I was stopped at an intersection and this guy was standing there looking like he wanted to cross so I waved at him to cross, and he waved back motioning for me to go so I started to move right when he walked out into the intersection and I bumped into him at about 2 miles an hour. so the instructors like "well you did okay but I got a fail you cause you hit a guy."

First time failer here as well. During the emergency stop portion I didn't know that you literally have to stomp on the brakes. I stopped relatively quickly but not quick enough for the testing lady. The second time I took the test I made sure the person felt plenty of pressure against their seatbelt. I think I also lost points for not coming to a complete stop before leaving the parking lot and not turning around in my seat while backing out of the parking spot. I think the lady I got was in a really bad mood that day.

I passed mine the first try. The written one was an adventure. I had five left that I had delayed back to the end because I didn't know them. I needed to get all five right to pass, and I did. Surprised I didn't personify my favorite hockey team and get four straight then miss the last one in embarrassing fashion.

Yeah I don't think I've known anyone to fail. Although after one month, my license was suspended. Two speeding tickets, 126 in an 80 both times (km/h).

Passed very easily the first time. No problems with either portion.

One speeding ticket on a trip down to Clemson (Some guy directly in front of my sped up and I thought the speed limit had changed since I knew it did near that area just after Concord Mills, so I sped up just in time for him to change lanes and slow down as we went down a hill towards a cop. And it was literally three quarters of a mile before the speed limit change).

One very minor accident on Hillsborough because people don't know how to not slam on their brakes.

And to bring this whole thing full circle.

Fist off, screw Hillsborough.

I was driving to get lunch at Bojangles yesterday, and almost got rear ended. I was driving down Six Forks towards the Bos on Atlantic, and just past the beltline, where to speed limit increases, something incredibly stupid happened. Right after the beltline lane merges in, there's a turn lane to go into that little development thing that North Hills took over. Well the guy who just got off decided that he's too cool for turn lanes, and basically stopped in the intersection, and turned right from the straight lane.

Had the original oh **** moment when I saw the guy ahead of me slam on his breaks, slam on mine, and I was far enough back that I wasn't close to hitting him. Guy behind me wasn't as lucky. I hear his tires squealing, and as I look in my rear-view, I see him swerve to the right to avoid hitting me. If he hadn't I probably would have gotten pushed forward into the guy in front of me.

A bit shaken I continue my drive. Get to Bos, get my usual Cajun Filet Biscuit Combo, frys Unsweet tea.

And it was all perfect. Totally made me forget about my ordeal until right now.

Passed the written easily first time and pretty sure I passed the driving easily as well first time. It's hard to know what you "scored" on it but I know I passed and the guy didn't have a panicked look on his face so I guess I did well.

Passed my test the first time, but was sure I wouldn't.

Did fine right up until the end, when the tester in beautiful downtown Wendell, NC, said "ok, pull 'er in right there and let's go inside."

What he meant was "pull your car over to the curb there in that gigantic space behind that other car, so we can go in and get your license."

What I thought he meant was "pull your car next to that other car and show me how to parallel park."

Which I then tried to do, ending up halfway on the curb.

At which point he said "ok, now drive around the block and pull into that space like anyone with sense would do."

Which I did, and then went inside and got my license.

Same here, probably went there twice a week before school since swimming practice was ridiculously early in the morning and I needed something to fuel up before classes started.

Where the hell is a PDQ around here to begin with?

Yeah, that's where the PDQ is, I went there once, it was OK. I'll probably go again in the future.

And I'll cosign the Mami Nora's claim. Stuff is like crack.

They're also opening a new location on 15-501 between Chapel Hill and Durham near the Patterson Place shopping center. I'll be so happy when I can get my PDQ fix once more.

As for the driving test rigamarole, I failed my first time. SC requires you to parallel park in your driving test. If you bump either of the two wooden barricades (the one in front or behind that simulate the cars you're parking between) even if it's a light tap, it's an autofail. So there were two parallel parking test areas at the main DMV office in Columbia where I took mine. One of them had a manhole cover where the pavement was sort of "domed." In parking in that space you'd have to apply pretty much the perfect amount of power to get over that dome without also bumping the rear barrier. My first go I gave it just a little too much and bumped the barrier, thus autofailing. What sucked is the tester said "You passed with flying colors right up to that point." I took it again the next month and, luckily, learned from my mistake. When my wife told me she didn't have to parallel park for her NC driver's exam I had a small bit of rage because I realized how much easier y'all had it AND that I'd likely be stuck parallel parking both of our cars any time it came up.

2) Back out of parking space, proceed to exit

3) Right turn out of the parking lot

4) U-turn at the first median

5) Left turn back into parking lot

6) Park back where we started

My memory of my SC test is that I had to do the following:

1) Successfully turn on the car and operate the brakes, turn signals, etc

2) Right turn out of the parking lot onto a major thoroughfare

3) Turn left with a center turning lane onto a side street

4) Signal and pull to the side

5) Correctly configure car for parking uphill with a curb, uphill without a curb, downhill with a curb, or downhill without a curb depending on instructions from inspector.

6) Demonstrate knowledge of hand signals

7) Right turn onto another major thoroughfare

8) Right turn onto another side street

9) Right turn onto first major thoroughfare

10) Left turn onto side street using center turning lane

11) Demonstrate ability to drive car in reverse

12) Demonstrate ability to conduct a three-point turn

13) Demonstrate ability to parallel park

14) Park back where we started

I had trouble with this one. Took me 4 tries. :shakehead

Actually, mine was pretty much the same, as I recall. I did mine at the one in downtown Cary... the only extra thing I had to do was stop and look before crossing the railroad tracks.
